Xovemlter 17, I sc of Money i Elections Kvery American citizen, no matter what his political pre dilections may be, who proper ly values the elective franchise, 'must view with concern this Lrrowintr evil. One of the cor rupting tendencies of whichi if nut arrested hynn elevated, sense of patriotism and frowneddoyn by public opinion, must sooner or later undermine our free iu- . stitutions, by rendering ourpe riodical elections to office a de ( fitful snare and a pitiful farce. Thirty three Sovereign States i have just iroi.e through' with tin- formality of holding, an election, and while we do i not attribute the success which! has: crowned the victors, to the lav- ish expenditure of money in corrupting voters, yet no. i one will deny it lias been freely us ed, and was relied upon as an important factor in determining the result. . Now we submit that all this is radically wrong, and thatev ery attemt to influence elec tions bytlie use of money in 1'iit ure, oiurht to be rebuked by an indignant- public opinion, and punished, so far as render ed criminal bylaw. It is idle to talk. of a -'free ballot and a fair count," so long .as such practices are continued and sanctioned, instead of being scorned and condemned And laws however stringent they may he, will never correct this evil, until public sentiment is thoroughly aroused to the dau ber which threatens the liber ties of the people front this de moralizing arency. j The wamimrs of history em phasize our own experience, by denouncimr this growing evil. In the Ancient lemocracies we a re told i Men, all but a few, i "Were bought and sold i As interest or im price enjoined." In Modern times European Sta tes men have been quick to colculate and swift to profit by the use of money in elections.- 1'rom the grave Englishman and the witty Frenchman, we may leant lessons of wisdom upon this important subject. -. The .lay llubbell, Mahonesand Motts, with their hypocitical ' criervof "a free ballot and a fair count," should be assigned their proper lace in the politi- i- i.l history of .the country, as corrupters of public morals and enemies of popular liberty', i KdiitToinltc and Halifax, What Shall the Harvest Be V In the midst of our rejoicing oyer the. great victory which the democratic party has just achieved, we should not forget the responsibilities which it de volves upon us, nor fail to util ize all the opportunities which it afford of redeeming the pledges heretofore made to the people. If wise counsels, pru dence, eaution, honest and fair dealing with the people are ob served hy the representatives of the party which have just been chosen, our present victory will not only not be a barren one, but will contribute to swell the still more overwhelming victo ry, which the democratic party hopes to achieve in 18X4. ' That no permanent good came to the democratic party from the great tidal wave of 1X74, though humiliating to re member, may be mane io us it profitable lesson. One such ex perience ought to be sufficient to teach us to avoid the snares arid quick-sands by which' our hopes then were wrecked. ur representatives State and Nat ional should see to it that the promises " made to the people during thtl campaign, are not forgotten by them as soon as the election is over, but that they are promptly and faithful ly performed. ' No party can long sustain itself by legitimate methods which fails to keep faith with the people. , Our' Next Legislature. majority. Kuffin and the Ju dicial ticket are elected by ful ly 2,000 majority. It is evi dent'that the' republicans bent all their energies to the elec tion of Dockery, leaving Folk and the Judicial ticket to take care of themselves, and this accounts for the tight race be tween Bennett and Dockery. On Tuesday of last week the editor of - the Aovaxck sent a telegram to the' JVews-Obsercer in which he called Mr. Hugh F. Murray a radical. Mr Mur ray requests that we make a correction. He savs that he was not a republican but an in dependent democrat. We make this correction in justice to Mr. Murray and have only regrets that his course has been such as to have lead his friends of former days to be in doubt as to his political status. As an "independent democrat," now that he sees the true democra cy care for "none of these things" it is liis duty to drop the "independent" and be a simple, plain, simon pure dem ocrat; and desist from trying to break up all party organization --a thing many man have at tempted but in every case sig nally failed. of the grent good lwdng doue by the X:r:n:.l." .' , i?? 3 This hicrh commendation of our j ri j. i - ' 1 y.
