The little son and wife of Mr. W, C. Weaver, at Easonsburg, were badly burned Monday week. It Is thought the child will die, and Mrs. i Weaver, will lose some, if not all of; her fingers. She suffered greatly tiying to save her son. At the time Mr. Weaver was at Rocky Mount on business. Farm'cis are complaining heavy of hard times. A happy Christmas to you all. A FRIEND. Near Nashville. Dec. 12, 1882. j. i The Burning ol the Steamer Enterprise- HOW CAPT. W. A. THOMPSON AND ' TWO OTHERS LOST THEIK LIVES. On MOndav afternoon of last week a burning steamer was seen, itu-mf-. five miles down the river. The news spread rapidly over the : town and caused considerable ex-; citemeut fiom the fact that the ; identify of the boat was not known. ! Thramers Washington, Edge. com&Cand Enterprise were all due j that eveninsr, and some were, iook ing for friends or relatives on one' or t he other of them. The Steamer Stout, Clyde Line, first brought the news, but it was i verv indefinite, -nothing more than J that she passed a steamer burning, I her bnsv Captain not having time to investigate ordinary matters. Capt. Styron soon put off with the ; StcamerGreenville to the scene of; the disater and returned in about ; an hour, the Steamer Washington arriving' alsmt the same time. Then only wa it known what a terrible catastrophe had occurred. The enterprise with her cargo had ; been entirely destroyed, ana tnree lives'lost and several more or less seriously injured. We applied to Capt. M. S. Mayo of the burned Steamer Monday nightand obtain ed the following particulars, which we "will reproduce, in nearly his own words. He left Aurora Mon day morning at .":.'? for Washing ton and touched at North Creek, Keidsville, and Durhams Creek for passengers. He came out of Dur hams Creek at 2 p. m, and as a strong wind was blowing, he order ed crew to look out for sparks on cotton which was piled on deck. At three o'clock he discovered in the aft of the Steamer on port side a bale of cotton on fire, lie threw a bucket of water over it but soon found that several other bale had caught. He threw one bale over , , . i : t... .1 .. .. .....lw Point about one mile distant. The wind was blowing from aft and carried the fire forward, lie went toYhe pilot house to signal those on shore, but the fire was gaining rapidly he could not reach the whistle. He then saw he could do nothing for the Steamer and turn ed liis attention to saving the passengers including a lady and chihl. The- life hat was" r tow very fortunately and the Captain attributes the saving of so many o this faet. He put the lady and chihl in a. boat a:nl with? Messrs. A. futrell, .1. .1. Marlcr. the mate and two negroes who jumped on iv.iard, they pushed off. At this time Mr. .lohn Litchfield jumped overboard and hung to the boat until he reach ed sh:re.: The' other 'passengers and crew jumped in the water and clung to whatever they could reach. In the meantime Mr. ' Wm. Swindell who lives on Mau'oint had put off ill his boat to render aid. He rescued Thomas Venable, lhe fire man. 'apt. M. M. (irav. engineer, one deck hand and Mr J. C. Hland. It is here that the most terrible part of this .disaster occurred. Cant. W. A. Thompson nnil.Mr. W. 11. Hancock were in the water -li"rinS to the loat lack. Mr. Swindell had gotten within about thirty fact of them, when they, in t heir anxiety to reach the boat, made a spring for the boat and in doing, so loosed their hold upon the rack. Before -Mr. Swindell could reach them they sank. Trim Peyton' a colored passenger, was also drowned. Washington Xorth Stnto Prcsx. Wilson Market' - IHHKTKI VTKKKI.Y r. Byivum Dan?.el rCo., TT )N.
