Yesterday morning a farmer drove up in front of Rountree, Barnes & Co's with six bales of cotton which he offered for sale. Our buyers soon surrounded him and bego n to make bids. While thus engaged the countryman said "I'm too cold to talk cotton now. If I could have a good tussel I'd be warmed up and more in the notion of trading. No sooner "had he made an end of speaking" than our our young friend. Thos. A, Davis, cotton buyer for Rountree, Barnes & Co. began to take a diagnosis so to speak, of the man's physique. After completing the examination Thos. said to him, "are : you much fin TOPatUiiifr!'' ' . Never had a man to throw me in my life," said the owner of the cot ton. ' "Well," said Thos., "I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll wrestle with you on the condition that if I throw yon vou are to sell me your cotton at nine cents: if you throw me Fll trive you nine and an eight." "Agreed," said the farmer, and re- paring to the rear of the store the wrestling commenced, a crowd of spectators looking on. j "Fair holts" were taken and the fun began, but in less time than It takes to write it, Thos. had thrown the man as flat on the ground as could be, and was weighing his cot ton and falling out his check for the cotton at nine cents a pouiid By this feat of strength on the part ot their .clever cotton buyer Koun- tree, Barnes & Co. made an eighth of a cent a pound on about 2,500 pounds ot of cotton. The matter will be up again at the April meeting. Ex-Sheriff Cockrell has resumed work on his new stores in town. ' G. March 14th, 1833. Dear Advance: On Monday morning between midnight aud day, Mr. J. C. Randolph, of Cro wells Cross, Roads, lost by fire at his Caledonia plantation, his barn containing about three hundred barrels of corn and a quautity of fodder and oats; also his stables with four mules and one fine mare, together with wagons, carts and farming inplements. It seems that everything was under one roof or adjoining, mcenuiary. no in surance. Mr. Simon Meyer hud Miss Antonia Newman went to Weldon to-day to meet a Rabbi, and were united in matrimony. Some unknown party or parties. dug under the smokehouse of Mrs. Jane Wilkins, and after getting out all the meat, about seveu hun dred pounds, set fire to the house. Being near her dwelling, it was only by superhuman efforts that it was saved. When our young men "take with a leaving," it1 is tor parts remote. Not long since two of them left for Texas, and now two others have gone, Mr. W. H. McGwigau to the termiuusof the most Southern Railroad in Florida, and Mr. Geo. Manning to Fargo, Dakota. Misses Flora and Ida Hunt of Oxford are visiting relatives in this vicinity. The small boy (nigger) who ate sixteen ginger cakes yesterday for them and twenty-five cents, says he is ready to do it again this morn ing. There is nothing unusual about differences of opinion concerning things in general, but when two leaders in anything are not of the same opinion, in fact exactly oppo site, it goes to prove that all is chance. The above thought was suggest ed by hearing one of our leading merchants say that a good time was coming, abundant crops of every wdescription ould be raised this year, and that he expected to sell more goods than ever before, while another leading merchant sees "through a glass darkly," and will "hug the shore," failing to see any signs of promise.
