JFor Oood Turnouts GO TO THE LIVERY STABLES I V OF- e, i.HAWKiirs.. TO DO FIRST-CLASS : WORK FOR LESS MONEY THAN ANY OFFICE IN NORTH CAROLINA. BUSINESS MEN, SHOULD Political Chat at The National Capi tally Our Eegular Reporter- Washington-, June, 7th, l.SS). Politics have this week been pushed to the wall by that "one touch of nature that makes the whole world kin." Democrats and Republicans have vied with each other to provide succor for the thousands ol people made homeless by the great floods in Pennsylva ma. Washington has shown the world that however heartless she seems to be in her dealings with political and social doings, she in reality has a a great big human heart, throbbing, just now in. sympathetic accord wiih her suffer Ing brothers and sisters of the Comemaugh Valley upon whom such a terribte calamity has fallen. A public meeting was held to pro vide organized methods of collecting money and clothing ;and was attend ed by an immense crowd and was presided over by the President who make a stiong appeal lor sub scriptions, About 850,000 in cash has been raised besides an enor mous quantity of blankets.clothing. disenfectants, etc. Everybody seemed disposed to give somethiug; poor people who were not able to give money gave a blanket or a cast off garmeat, boot blacks and news boys handed in their nickles alongside the millionaires thousand dollar checks, end the children emptied the pennies out of their little banks in order to turn them over to the Committee. For the first week nothing was talked about or Beemingly thought about but the awful news from Johnstown. Washington's flood had done a damage tor property public and private of several millions of dol lars but that was entirely forgot ten in the face oi the great loss of life by the Pennsylvania horror. Already the Republican acting Commissioner of the General Land office has begun to undo the good work of the Democratic adminis tration. He has given notice that he intends abolishing the Board of Review and the Division of Con tests, both established nnder Mr. Cleveland's administration, and both recognized as being in the in terests of the homsteader and against the land-grabber. But as the last named class have for many years, with the exception of from 1885 to 1889, controlled that office the change can hardly be surpris ing. The Civil Service Commission is busily engaged in discovering ''mare's nests." It has just re ported a large one iu the New York custom house, and is now in Troy. N. Y., hopiug to find one iu. the postoffice. Next week it Is to start West on a grand tour of dis covery which yill embrace a dozen cities. LOOK TO THEIR INTEREST AND TRY US. An Elegant Substitute. Good luck is A man of, pluck with his sleeves roll ed up and working to make it come out all right. think, of the Northern M. E. Church, moved to Florida from I Iowa or some part of the North. west with his wife and one child, about five years ago, being threat ened at that time with pulmonary consumption (I think he is now about fifty years of age). He settled at Ladv Lake, February 1st, 1884. In the fall of that year, while at work as a carpenter, engaged in ouuaing a nouse, he leu down in a fit, insensible. From this time be was in bed about six weeks. When able to get from or be moved from his bed, he could not walk without assistance, except when holding uimselt up by a fence, m which way he moved very slowly. A year after the attack mentioned,' about three years or more ago, ue Decame on-; able to walk, even by holding np to a fence as he had done, aud after that, until last Thanksgiving Day, was able to move onlv on bis hands, except when he had the as sistance of one or more stout per sons, together with a pair of crutches, and even in this' way he made very slow and difficult prog rtss, aud on that account rarely moved about except on his hands, in a sitting posture, keeping nearly always at home near his dwelling house. The cause of Mr. Thompson's lameness is understood to have been a spinal disease, considered by educated physicians of experi ence in the business of their profes sion, to be incurable. At any rate, several such physicians in this sec tion of country are said to have ex ercised their medical skill upoD him, haviug been known by the public to visit Mr. Thompson. It is gen erally believed that the physicians tried and failed to improve his con dition. 1 have lived for several yars since moving to Florida, aoout one mile trom Mr. Thomo son's residence, and know the facts as stated partly from my own ob servation and partly from informs' tion received directly from reliable persons, who have been living with in one or two hundred yards of Mr. iiiompson and have seeu mm often nearly every day during the four years meutioned. On Thanksgiving Day of 1888, I was one of the eongregatiou preseut at the service held at Lady Lake, as above stated. Mr. Thompson was carried from his residence to aud into the house where the ser vice was to be held. At the con clusion of a plain sermon approprl ;tte to the occasion aud f ree from any attempt to create excitement, Mr. Thompson, having sent a mes sage Horn his seat to the officiating minister, was helped by him and auotber gentleman to the rostrum in front of the people. He there slated to the congregation that h had, when alone in bed in the ab sence ol bis family before bed lime the preceding uiijht, heard a voice saving to him, in .sub.-tauce, that if he would go to that place where Thanksgiving service was to be neui auu gei me people to come up around him and pray for his "recov ery, he should be cured or relieved of his lameness. Mr. T. said that on account oi mat proline ' e was piesent. lie asked the pfui.ie to come forward ami kneel with him in prayer. By his request, the of ficiating minister began to lead iu prayer for him, but Mr. Thompson himself very soon took the lead, his voice using auove an otuers, pray ing to irod and the Lord Jesus Christ. His prayers increased, if possible, in earnestness and inten sity as he proceeded, until b" reach ed what to some appeared ' ' a climax of daring, by asl hit God would either comma n i i u ; rise and walk home, or lei mm die and be carried liora the house a corpse. Soon after reaching this poiutbf his prayer, when there was a feeling amongst at least a por tion of the audience that "something would happen," he cried out : "It is done." "Allelujah !" and rose from a reclining or kneeling posi tion to walk. Several gentlemen of the congregation started to take hold of him, fearing he would fall, but he waived them off, saying: "Uon't touch me" and went to wards the door, walking nearly the length of the house and down the steps to his dwelling three hundred or four hundred yards distant, bare-headed, without touching a crutch or stick of any kind or being toucneu or aided in any way by another person. After teaching home he continued to praise and thank God, getting on bis kuees and np again as readily as anv one of his age, frequently kicking outane loot ana leg that had been paraljzed to show what he could do with it. lie only prayed to recover from his lameness, and in that respect lie has seemed quite well 6ince to this time. His health in some other particulars is not very good but I hardly think he has been confined to his house any since that time more than other people who enjoy ordinary health. 1 have seen him very frequently walking about the village, untill quit- recently aud I am iu forme. I that he is still well. I believe l;have stated the prin cipal or most material facts in the case so far as 1 know them. I do not think from expressions I alter wards beard that many of the- con. cregation were very hopelul of a favorable auswer to the prayer for Jir, Tiiomoson, or tuat tney were stiong in belief or exieutatun that he would be enabled to walk. The full spirit and leadership of the occasion seemed to be in hifn. At the time when he prated to be eu able' to walk from that house to his home or be struck dead aud earned as a corpse from the house the apparent absence of an ham ble spirit of submission to the will of God, which there seemed to be in such a prayer, it was a shock to some it, was to me; I afterwards beard a lady who was present say she was afraid be weald or expect ed he wonld die then and there, or words to that effect. In view of what took place however, In his restoration, it might seem that God was not displeased with his prayer in omitting to express a spirit of submission to His will, that be was justified or pardoned for omitting oecause he believed the will of God as to his cure was already revealed to him in the promise he believed to have been made to bitn when on hi bed the night before as related. I have beard Mr.Tbompsom say thxt be bad been thinking a long time about having a meeting speci ally to pray or his recovery. He had thought more or less About it for several years perhaps and bad spoken to friends of holding such a meeting but bad received little encouragement from others. He had been creatly impressed by tne writings of a man in Boston who is constantly engaged in work ol that kind, that is holding meetings at times appointed to pray for the recovery of any 'afflicted" person who solicits prayers, which latter Is expected to have a meeting of his friends at the same time for the same purpose. While Mr. Tbomp sou bad been impressed by the wntinrs of this person, there waa no understanding between them od this occasion, and it is only men tioned here to show the previous tendency of bis mind. 1 do not thins there baa been anything in the life and conduct ol Mr. Thompson since be has lived here to justify anyone in thinking he wonld be guilty of the hypocrisy of trying to deceive people iu a case like this. It would require a decree of wickedness that one of good moral and religious character. so far as known, conld not reasou obly be supposed to be guilty of, No one baa so far as I have heard undertaken to allece anything in bis life aud conduct previous to or since coming here that would jus tify such a suspicion. People are apt to view such cases with doubt or suspicion of some kind It has been intimated that Mr Thompson's lameness waa a decep tion by which be expected to make money, but as I know no facts to sustain the charge it does not seem best to give particulars as to the nature of suspicion. The opin ion has also bceu expressed that bis restoration was the result in a natural way of the extraordinary excitement in its effect upon his nervous system. I do not really know the amouut of we'ght to which such an opinion is entitled, but mention it for your considera tion. I will say in conclusion for my self even if it should hereafter ap pear to me that Mr. Thompson's recovery was the result of regular natural causew, or it should be proven that be was guilty of de ception iu this cawe. I do not feel or think it would decrease the strength ot my belief that God does bear the prayers of bin creatores and answers in tacb ways as are best lor there, though I cannot feel sure, even after a witness of, what I have just written, that we should even pray without a "thy will be done," acknowledging the superior wisdom of our Father in Heaven, and trusting fully to His mercy and goodness, i just believe that God bears and answers pi aver. It seems to b the most reasonable view from the ry nature ol things to be iudeed an over whelming necessi'y, to a man con scious of bis weakness aud de pendence, that provision should be made whereby be uiav ak lorwbat be ueeds with reasonable assurance that ibis petitions will be beard aud well considered. This is what I suppose would le called iuternal evidence, and I do not feel that it can be materially weakened by positive knowledge of deception in the case referred to. or by any otb er proof of the nnfulness of a oor, weak fellow creature. The Uther hood of God seems to me to imply that we His children may boifullv ask of him, feeling that the measure or degree of our success in receiv ing a favorable answer to prayer will not be determined altogether by fixed physical or material laws, but that wheu occasion requires these win yield toor be modified by the higher principles and Kwers of moral and spiritual laws, 1 1 which the physical must be subordinate thus both kiuds working together, tne win oi Uod. Please excuse me lor adding un solicited tuese thoughts of my own in connection with the facts you as ted lor, but l have dona so part y t least because I do not wish my mistaken inferences as to my opiniou to be down from any state tueut ot facta 1 make.
