Senator Gorman was a true prophet when be said just after the death of the late NV. 11. Bar uum, chaimau of the National Democratic committee, that Oaiviu S. Bnce would be elected to cucceed im when the committee met. Mr, Bnce has been elected, and most Democrats satisfied, though many of them would have preferred to Bee the brainy Maryland Senator take up the reins. The Virginia Republican's Ma- hone and anti-Mahone, have monopolized political attention this week. The antra through their committee headed by Ex-Gov. Cameron, had a long conference with Harrison on Wednesday, which wound np in a row, hard though polite words being passed on both sides. Harrison decliued to recogDize the anti's in the matter of partronage, claiming that all appointments would made with out regard to which faction endors ed the applicant. One ot the committee at this stage very Iertinently asked why it was then that Harrison had directed Assis tant Pastmaster Clarksou Dot to appoint a single io?tmaster in Virginia without Mabones endorse ment. This made Harrison mad, be denied ever having given such au order in strong and forcible language. The Committee left in very bad huuor, and if they control half as many voles as they pretend"to, the democrats will have a walkover in irgima this tail I don't know whether Harrison eyer gave Llarkson toe order re ferrea to, but 1 have it on very good authority that Clatk-oii so stated to the friends of au ap plicant who did not have the en dorsement of Mahone. a The starting up of the U.
