TlIK letter of our Ringwo.id c irres. poudent brings us the sad intelligence of the Jia'.h of Mr. James i , Nicholson, yiungest son of Thomas W, Nicholson, Esq , of this county. D 'ath is always a terrible visitant but it is when it chouses for its vicliu.s those who from iheir youth seem to have maoy years before them, and from their virtues of head and heart give promise that their lives will be use ful to their fellow. men and honorable to themselves that grief is most poignant. Such a cae was this, Mr. Nicholson had only in June last graduated with high distinction at the University of North Carolina. His high moral char acter made it certain that his shining talents would be used in such a mannar as to confer honor upon himself and benefit upon mankind, lilt the (in went forth and he was cut off, j ist at the bloom of bis promise was ripening into th fruit of performance. Hut "God moves io a mysterioui way his wonders to perform," and we must bw ; bjx'jlU'il'miss'ot) to budcroe. koiu n vhito.x i-im.i ru s. Tho people of Northampton certainly have nu excuse for not voting, Ii r they hae a legislative ticket to ote for, li e election of which would give them lusting honor. For the llouic of Repie sentalivi s Jam; V. Grant i a candi date, and a better man never was a candidate for any office. Hit prjlju of this tuat: to the people of his county ! emphatically a work of superogution, A-loop and well ipeot life of usefulness I has endeared him to the people. Tbey know hi i it and hi life and with Ihem he needs praisa from no one. More generally known than Mr. Gran:, but no better a man, because God never inudo one, is Hon. J it. Hi Cherry the candidate for the .S juste in the district compos"'! of the counties of Nurthnnptoo and l'ertic. Tbe letter published eLewhere sijs nil of Mr Cherry tli it is necessary. We will state that this le'.ter is fnn a prominent republican and is signed with hit own name, whiik we withhold. Hith f theso gentlemen are n ell worthy of the hearty su.i,iort of thuir fellow c Y. 'n. Tlie dissensions in the Republican taiki ate rep rtetl as such and so great tint there is a possibility of electing them and it will be ti the ever lasting disgrace of the Denncrats of Nor'.lmmot in a id ll.-rtie shoull these gentlemen be defeated by their laches Jamks F. U'IIaua Chairman nf the Hoard of Comniissi'iiirrs for Halifax county, has recently had said board to allow hiuisrlf five hundred, and two other lawyers one thousand dollars each, total two thousand five hundred dollars, to defend the county in a suit for silt bonds, said bonds having lung since bceen declared invalid by our Supreme Court in Leak vs. Cnmmiksioneri of Richmond county. This is a last grab for the O'lhra Rileigh News. The facts of the case referred toby the Raleigh News arc ns follows. The county of Halifax had been suej or was about to be sued for an amount largely in excess of $50,000, only one the claims being a salt b nd. The board of commissioners made a contract with two lawyers to defend these suits. Tne contract is that the attorneys for the county are to receive $.ri00 each as a retainer and $500 each more, in case they defend all the suits Successfully. This contract was openly and publicly made and entered on tho records of the commissioners. The contract signed by the gentlemen referred to was not signed by O' flats as attorney, and he was not ana is not, in .lis personal ca- 1 pacity, a party thereto. It would, perhaps, be as well that our neighbor shotild inform himself of the facts in any case before he speaks. Till: K i: OF KLKt l lOV. Ilefore another week shall have passscd awiy the political battle of 1878 will have been lost and won. O i Thurs day next the p ilitical lutore of North Carolina is to bo diici led. If on that day the I) niocracy shows increase of power or even holds its own, then radicalism need no longer be regarded as a factur in North Carolina political problems; but, if the Democracy shows any material loss of strei gth then we wiay look to see the monster reur anain its hydta-head in our midst. For this reason then it is as much the duty of every good Democrat to register and vote this yesr as it was in the years when the battlu was warm and the re sult io doubt. 15 it it is uot al ine the effect, which next Thurslay's affiirs will have on North Carolina politics, that makes il our do'y to vote on thst day. After the l'.h day of next March the Federal Semite will certainly be Democratic, and so the two parties are this year en gaged i i a deadly struggle, the Demo crats to retain, and the Republicans to regaiu control of the lower house of Congress Now the present house ol representatives coiui-ts of 151 Demo crats and 112 Republicans, a binall Dem cratic majority, but enough if we can hold it. R.it thirteen of the Democratic members of the body in question were elected by a inaj iruies of less than 500, and the experience of 100 seirs says tint this is a very small margin to run a race (or Congress on. W nupp ise there are few of our readers who wi fail ti remember the political history of 1S72 In that vear a Renuhlie.m uiajot'.ty of 1800 in August selad into 40,000 by Nocmber, aud the defeat of Democratic candidates in Aogust gave the Oreelny m ovcuent its death stroke. This year is another 1872. The result of the C oigressiunal elections will de pend iu a great measure on the results of next Thursday. If tre IK-mocracv shows any decidud falling off of strength ou that day, it will be heralJed abroad a id u-ed with fatal effect in close districts elsewhere. The outside woild will not ud- derstaod that a light vote only meaus that the Democratic party has a wulk-ovet,and need u ( run at speed. People of other Stales will iii stop to think that this is arj off year in pi lilies, and that the vole is always light in. such years. A small Democratic vole will be taken to mcau a loss of Democratic stren.'.h, mid mav lead to the Sow of tbi Druse. For these reasons then we entreat o r people to do their duty its good Demo crats and as good citizens by coming to the polls next Thursday and voting for the regular nominees of the Deruoerat'c party. The Livi g Ae has recently begun the publication of a new serial story ("A Doubting Heuit.") by Miss Keary, author of the very popular btiry "Custle Daly," etc. It is also publishing twu oilier serials, one by Mrs. Oliphant (' Within the I'recincts," which promises to be one uf her best), and one by Williim II ack.
