THE ROANOKE NE"'S. RATL'HDAY. AIGCST 17, 1S78. Hon'. Jesse J. Yr.vris lias been rt nominated for Congress in the first Pis. trict and ail the hosts of radiealis n will not pievail against him. Ouu Kingwood letter cotdains a deli cate and ell merited c omplimeiit to our friemi I'r. Oeo. K. Mut'hees, aod in this compliment and the hopct and good wishes expressed fur the future of that gentleman we desire to put on record our hearty concurrence. orit i v i.i. ( ami'vk;v. The result of the election held on the first day of this present in mill is such as foreshadows sharp woilc fur the lljui ocracy in the cnnorciu mal campaign on which ste are now ciitcting. O ir lines must bu re-arrangd, discipline must be rc-mlorcci or wo will lose ctr tainly one and probably to of our Congressional delegates. Ii is useless to disguise facts. The Atlgnst election gave symptoms of a loss of Pemocratic strength and a luilyof party discipline which will be fatal it: November unless remedied. What steps arc to be liken Io re-icl-just our organ; tinn, we do n"l feel ourselves competent to say. In our judgment the proper course t be pur sued is for the State Executive Committee to adopt a general plan for tho cam paign. Theu let the Esecti'.ive Coin mittccs for the severul (Congressional districts and of each county in said Dis tricts be charged with the duty of seeing that this plan is carried into effect with speed, vigor and energy. We think by this plau of operitijus the present dan gers can be averted and IVeroocratic discipline re-established but unless this plau or one similar is adopted we con fess we have grave feus for the resul'. oi'ic co u r i.s v o m i: ( i:, We are. again this week crowded with letters from corrcsp indents in various parts of the county and to them we dr. vote a large portion of uur space. We are heartily glad to receive these Idlers. It makes us believe that the people are begininj to realizo tint the News is, nhat we are resolved it hall be, a me dium for the inter communication of the thoughts and opini jus of the people. Their organ io that it speaks by them, to them mid for them. This we conceive is the mission of local pipers and it gratifies us to see that the people are begiuuiiii; to realize that such is our opwiou and are assisting us iu carr)'mg o .t these ideas. Another reason for our gratification at the receipt of these c nmnuuicatioi.sis that we have noticed that the average Ameri can does not write letters to pappi.s which be d ics not l.ke.and the constant increase in our list of conti ibu'.oi's g ies to show, that in spite of heavy opposition the square, straightforward c induct of the New g is, as e expected it would do winning its w;.y to t'aa heart of the goo.l people of the country, that these peoplo ere satisfied with our course and will lustai i us in it. If then any of the read-is of the News has an opinion he desires tj pre sent, h is a reform ha desires to see in stituted, or has an abuse he ilef'ies to see broken down, we oirer our columns s a means for the prop iati u of his i leas, and, whether his opinions coirede with our own or not, his views shall re ceive publicity ami his aig'imenls re spectful consideration. We know that in pursuing this course we must raise uo for ourselves enemies, but for this we care nothing. We thaik (i id that we have never learned: "Tooro k tlm prensut bintfe of Ihe '(nee, "Wlie.-n thrift mi-lit tnll'nv laviiin." We shall go straight in the line of what ste C mc:iv nur duly, and can neither be b illied nor soared intj a departure therufi io. 1111:1-or nu; ititiii.t r mi s. Josiah Turner the lately elected in- dependent Senator from Orange harangued a motley crowd in Uileigh Monday night nrd announced himself as a candidate for C ingress. Commenting nn which performance the LLUeigh Ob server says ! V'e trust that no more proofis needrd by the Democrats of the I' mrth Congres lienal District that Mr. J isiab Turner means mischief t i tb'cir party. We trust elf that in attacking hi in as one would a wolf within the fold, no man will any longer be thought cither iuditcreet or hasty. We trust als in selecting a man who baa just swerved from their accus tomed allegiance to their party, nine kuudred Democrats of the County of Orange, thai no one tcay be charged with having sought a foe unworthy nf bis He:l, or unworthy of any other man's tleel. ' We trust that we shall hear no more Democratic pity for the sorrows of t poor broken old man, whose ery help, lessnrsj should make gentle meicj fiil etcnlhe heart that but just now was ragi ij fi.h furious anger. J5.it enough of this. Mr. Turner in his strenode speech night before last for mally no jrceI liiuiself a candnlte fur C o gre-s in this D. strict. He further announced that he would submit to neither clique caus.is nor convention, but would run the race he had set befoie mm to me outer end. 1U; lurthcr a -nounced that be had accomplished that hi'heito supposed impossible feat, the purification of the Radical party, and called upon the negroes in consideration of his having purified their party to unite with l.i.n and help purify his party, that is to say, the Democratic party. This and much o'her nonsense, and his "n'd editorial" about bonds and rings and newspapers and the lawyers ho gave u'. teranco to, for more than two hours, in his speech in reply to a serenade given to him hy certain cit'zns of Uileigh, night before last, nt the National II 'tel. He also declared he would begin his canvass on yestorday at M irrisville , in Wake county. We reproduce these points of Mr. Tor. ner's speech to sh v tint there is no linger tho least shad ht of a shade o!' d oilit that Mr. Turner st inds to. day io open, I) ld, defliot opposition to the Democratic party and 1 1 show further that ho has deliberately gonu to work to appeal ti thi loweit pisi ms and basest prejudices of ignorant negroes to ac complish his own S'lli.li cods. I', is idle for any in in who sets himself up in open opp is'lion 1 1 hi pru as M Turner has d mo t i v ir I l ie I) -oi icratic party to cl ii . ii ti he. of that parti, 'i ir can any u:an si claim ti i supports Inui in that oppo sition. 0 inventions and caucuses arc absolutely necessary to perfect and maintain the discipline and organization necessary to secure success for any party, aid the mn nbo deliberately defies the convention of his party, or refuses to obny its mandate ca i no lon ger, with any decent pretence t sincer ity, claim its membership. Mr. Turner is in open defiance of the Democrat'!,' party io every w ly in which it is possible for bin 1 1 djfy it. lie an nounces his purpose not to go into its caucus and !o refuse t o submit himself t its c hi 'cnti in, and this too before cither co nvciition or caucus is held. He denounces tho D: u i cratic party ns con. trolled by thieves 2nd robbers and its newspapers as all being in the corrupt iuterest of corrupt railroad and b ind holding rings, its conventions us packed and its maohiiiery as rotten. N itliiag is to be found in ttia Du"n icratic parly uf io day, either in its principle !, its organ gan'zitioo, or its Md'ii'K'rs from Gov. Vance d owj that moots with Mr. Tur, ner's approbation. The only pure party in North Carolina to-day is the I! idical party, a id that he purified. The lie. groc, and the negro pirty only, t : lay have a s.veel siv ir in his nostr.U Uid a comi'ly look in his eyes. We call upon the Dtnocrats in this (' gression tl District, in Orange c iuity as well m out of it, to know, whether ther i tend any longer to stand by the man who thus defies and vdhfies them and their party. The time has come when men mav in 1 inner Call them selves Democrats and support Mr. Tu-. nor. ItisstuiTand nonsense to talk nf conciliating such a man. He can not be coi ciliated j he can not he satisfied ; his ambition is insatiable. Klect him to the Legislature to-day uud he will run for Congress te.mnrrow; m-st day for Governor; nrxt for Senator. There is no ei.J ti his greed for fii :t. He means to rule as long ns life shall last, or he means to rain all that good men hold Hear. Is North Carolina ready to submit to the rule of Jos'uh Turner for the balance of his natural days? That is the question for us to decide. 0 mi nion sense tells us to meet him as an open, armed and avowed enemy, and t meet him at once. Vi'e do not hesitate to ny that unless Mr. Turner is thus rart he will prove n t oi.ly an uiemy but a dangerous one. We sav as unhesitatingly mi the mher hand that if he thus met, he will be most signally defeated. Let him fce met and exposed mi the stump, let him be xpnsd io the newspapers, let the people he thoroughly informed, let not a day pass between now and election day io whidi his record is m l brought before the public in some shape or form an1 there will b no doubt as to the re suit. If. however, we make a half j hearted campaign or attorn) toconcili ate turn i treat hiru as one not alto gether fatally bent on mischief or pat up a m m against him that will permit himself to be browbeaten or bullied, or if we admit that men may be good D'liiocratS and support bun. l,e it iy win. Lie comment upon the Inferior Court of Litis county and the cases therein pend ing against the commissioners. I understand that many persons ascribe the authorship of the letter to me ; but why ihry should do so, I do not know, rx:ept, perhaps, from the fact that my name is mentioned in it la regard to the lo'ter I have 0:.ly to say that I am neither the author of it, nor iu a lywise connc;'ed with its puhlit cation ; and any charge or insinuation that I n'nled nr abetted, counseled or advised it is purely gratuitous and u. founded. I knew in thing nf its existence until it nop ured in your piper. II ing an attorney practicing in the Inf iior (' mrt, the reciprocal duties towards each ntlier are well defined; and I should c msi ler myself entirtly out ol place in criticising its conduct through the newspapers. I s action, ir these and in all other cases before it, like tha. of all Courts, speaks for itself if it has been proper, it is a jostifi.iition unto itself; and no stiictures up m it by myself or others cm d.:tia:t from it and if it has been wrong, then no end rseinent of miue or other can j is'.ify it. I, it i other members nf the liar, am c ninsel f r the c ui-missi mcrs; ond us s i c Ii , am cl urged with the sworn duty of securing to them, us far as I can, a lair and impartial trial according to the laws of the landso long as 1 occupy this popittoo, (and I can safely say the same of my associates,) I shall endiavor to assert their just rights be fore the law ; and affrJ them that pro tection which, under the great charter of our liberties, is vouch safed to all men the high and low, the rich and the poor, the strong and weak, the prod I and the humble. I am not unmindful of the fact that much has been siid which is well calcc lated to prejudice the defendants before t ie public, and to deprive them of a fair trial ; but I trust end believe that the sense of justice is so strong with the people ol thii county, that they will not permit themselves to be swayed either to the one side or the other. When once the fair trial by jury shall be prostrated before popular clamor, no mm will be safe iu his person or tr ip, orty against the wickedness ond malice uf his enemies; and the blood of those who have died in defence of just laws will have borne bitter fruit to us, who cherish tbcin us martyrs tu human lib eity. When it shall come to pass that men are to be iried, not bv law but by pop, ular outcry that they shall be first con demned and then heard in their de fence then indeed, will the courts of our enmity have Ins' i rstige as tribu nals ol j istice, anil become mere minis? tes to record t le decrees of cruel and infuriated mobs ni'Ti chopping blocks upon which to immolate the guilty and Hie innocent alike. T.I It IB iu i ne aarx ages ot tne woru, we are told that men accused of crime weie s imetimes c uidumneJ nt one sittinp and at another, innjirics made to fine out whether they bad been propcily punished and the ancient codes that were written in blood were all inspired and enacted by popular fury that knew in law and showed uo mercy. 9 i now, ii iuc"e commissioners are to bo tried by a public discussion of their cause, either io the newspapers or oo the hustings, we had as well burn up our law books, tear d iwn our cnurt hou'es and let prejudice and passion be our masters. 3 so.
