Initio last Usiie of the Roanoki: News we promised to give to-day a slight outline oTO'Hira and Harris tlic regular Republican candidates for Con gress, iu tliii District and as the task it one in which our hearts delight wo have no idea of not redeeming our promise. We will begin with O'llara he being the first head set up by his sable Com peers. In bringing before tlio people the history of this truly wonderful man, we regret that the date concerning his birth and early life are so meagre and iifiuch conflicting lienor. It is only certainly known that be was borne omewhere and at sumo ti.nc. And this much is certain i nW became he made his appearance in North Carolina ab mt IS I'll) a full grown man, and, as we are precluded by ilia explosion of ancient mythology from believing that be sprung Minerva like from the brain of Jupiter, we take it fir granted be must have been born and raised somewhere. Weil as we have Slid he made bis appearance in this state and in lfiM wag enrolling or engrain cleik, we have forgotten which, of n Legislature, to have been connected with which is of itself sufficient to render aiy roan infamous. ()jr impression is that even at this early day the sub ject of this ski t:h shone I the bent of his goius by taking oulsidt! pay for doing work he was paid to do by the State, but as our recollection on this subject is not very diuiuct we will not press this point, but pass on to the next phase in iwell, Mi-s. and it bi Imm h.n , a mvsterv (o u nhv nurtham .... . i ..... O'lWs woi derful cireer. ', next have never come down here ,l ,ii;, h services of aim st any darkey during the legislative session, but Harris was tx t satisfied. The payment already referred to was sup, lamented by the receipt ol ?.iOO on the 13th .lay of January isfifl and of $:,00 on the first, Gf0 on the 2 1st .and f'iS.'.OOO on the 27th day ol ol February i the year. Making a Fnd total f seven thousand fie hundred dollars rect ived by Harris from ! Mili-field during te session of the Leg. islature of r8(7? and I860 "Nirr;ers had r i." ai d Harris was taking advantage of ihe high market to sell himself to art vantage. Harris text sought congres sional horors and in 1870 ran in the 4'.h District againt the lalo Si in II Rogers, but as he was badly beaten for Congress I y Colonel K igers and was aUo on the day of election knocked nearly through an elm tree by Sam Merrill, J i Turnei'a moi.ky wrench man he concluded that (he Legislature was good enough fur the likes of him, and so in 1872. he inn for and was elected to the Senate in Wake, emmty. He soon found that under a Democratic repine legislators were nut merchantable at titles and being beaten in 1S7I by V. M. ISu.bce Ksq he carpet-bagged drnvn to Warren to try his hand at Congress again. He has been so fur successful that he re ceived the nomination of ihe Kinsti.n conve iii hi what the result will be is to be seen. Now gentlemen yon have before you the two 1! idical candidates. Elect one of thcrn if ynu wish to, but don't say afterwards that you voted for them with out kn iwing their characters and recuids. . . . 4 . wki.dux I.KTTKIt. Our young friend Thad It Manning, local editor of the Danville, (Va ) Daily News-, writing to his paper from this place under date October 23rd., has the following to say of our town, We arrived here Sunday morning and have had the pleasure of meeting many friends and acquaintances to shake the hands of whom it aUavs afToids us un. bounded pleasure. Unlike the old place it was a few years ago, YVrldou it nproving considerably : the people are full of life and vieor; business is npnar- ently good ; tho merchants seem nrm perous, and the old town gives evidence nf yet growing into prominence as no important business place at no very dis tant day. IJ.it we t'tii.k it is beginning to be time for her to srou,o from her lethargy and show herself up in her Irue colors. This place is surrounded by one ol the finest sections ol country in the kaown world; ahno-t. and will) proper cultivation there is no telling the amount of weallh that niilit be produced from L- S ime of the pro nine, t features nf the fair will be pigeon shooting on Tuesday lor fine breecn-loading gun; grand mil lary displar and target shooting for gold medal on Wednesday ; hi nnal address (speaker not yet named) Thursday ; and giand hurdle tournament (-words to be used for lances) Friday; prize, th r ouolibied burs. Tbe radicals are kicking up quite a muss in this, the second congressional d strict. U"IIura, re.'rn, of Halilax, first Dominated, but ihinkii g heci ild 't till the bill, or proluhlv not being blauk enough, the radicals bi-U another co yention nt Kinslnn, s-une time Hp ousted O'Hira ad nominated J 11 Harris, ol Wurren, a black-i"d-'.an car ("' bagger from Wake. U' II ara refused to be thus "sot down upon" and now goes it as an independent. John Tliorne the infidel, of Warren, and whu was ex pelled from the legislature on that ac count, is also in the field as a radical-in oepenaent Candidate for congress Now, ihe disippoiiied and disgusted Humphrey oiiejit to trot out and trv his spied and bottom on the same track, for it secrr.s us if so h a course is the only one he can ever think of pursuin!. His negro brethren have utterly ignored him and placed upon his shooldeis a burden in the shape of the black and highly scented Jon Harris, which is an) thing hut pleasant to him. I'.s i bi ter pil but Humphrey most shallow it. In the meantime, while this wrangle is going no between the rads, Capl. W II Ivitchiu, ol this county, the democratic nominee, is doing noble work in the cause of the democracy. He has the odds ol between seieo and eight, thous and radical innj ority against him, but notwithstanding this his friends feel as lured of his election. Capt, Ki chin has done good service f the democratic party and it is but light and proper that every irue mend of relorm and just gov eminent should rally to his support and triumphantly elect hirn to that posltl which lie is so eiuii ently qualified to fill with honor alike to himself and bis Con slltoenls nnd ti Ihe universal welfare of his Slati' and country. He first emerged into publicilty here in the railroad campaign of 15172 or 17.1, and here, for once, candor, compels us to confess that O'llara was in good cumpany and on the ri-dit tide of the question. Ilnw he got there however is and must ever remain a dark and gloomy mystery.
