JTHE. ROANOKE NEWS. TIIUHSIHY, JUNE 20, 1S70. Louis NAroi.KOS was killed by the Zilu oo tbe first inst. He and a party of eijht men ere ambushed, and three were killed. The directors of the Oxford and Ileodereon Railroad, at a recent meet ing, iulructed tbe Prcsideat to secure the services of no engineer at no early day to srey the line, and to commence work by the 15tb day of July next. Tbe entcrpriscd will be pushed to an early completion. Last Tburtdiy the jury brought in a verdict of guilty of manslaughter against Mm Duer, who was charged with tbe murder of her compaainn. The jury recommended mercy, and oo this ac count the sentence was flvo hundred dollars fine. No doubt the victim's parents think their daughter's life wotth more than five hundred dollars, - --- In the Senate last week there was a sharp spit between Limar and Conk ling. Coulling accused the Democrats of Violating ao agreement made con cerning Lamar's levee bill. Lamar do Died this, and said "I return to him (Conkling) tbe charge of bad faith as a falsehood, with nil the contempt I have for tho author of it." Conkling an swered t This is not the place to neasuro with any man the capacity to viulale decency ; but if he understood the member coirectly, nothing but the fact that this was the Sjnate, kept him from denouncing that member as a cow ard, and said he, "to make my meaning plainer, if it was elsewhere than in the Senate chamber ho would denounce bim as i blackguard, a coward and a liar. Tbe rules of tbe Senate are the only restraint upno me. Lamar said the Seoator had understood his lan guage. It was severe and he asked pardon of the Senate, and added, 'It was languago which oo good man would deserve and oo brave man would wear." 'NArOM:O.M IV." RILLED. THK ONLY SON OF Kl'GKNIE LYING DEAD IN THE TAN GLED GRASS oFsorni AFRICA. now the oau.ast verse- ruixci-; LOST HIS LIKE IN A IlKCONNOIS SINCE AGAINST THE ZII.IS. Loxnox, June 19 Reuter's des patch from Cupe Town dated June 3, via Madeira to-day, states that I'rince Louis Napoleon, Print o Imperial of France, accompained by other o(licrr, left Colonel Wood's camp to reconnoi tre. The party dismounted in a mealic Geld, whon the enemy crept upon :'. i and assegoied the I'rince, killing bim. His body was recovered. Tbe Time's correspondent, writin" from Itelrzi Hill on the 2nd inst,, sus that tbe body of the Prince Imperial was discovered in a fulJ of long grass. There were no bullet wounds upou it, but there were seventeen wounds made by assegai thrusts. The body was found stripped and the clothes bad been taken away. Tbe Telegraph's dispatch from Cape Town, June 3, says the news of the death of tho Prince Imperial cast a (loom over the city. All the flags were flying at half-mast. Catk Town, June 3. A wall British fore was surprised oo the Orange river by a large body Routes. Several of the British were asspgaied in their teats. Six were killed and li. teen wounded. The enemy were pursued imd heavy loss inflicted upon them. 'hen the ex-Prince Imperial of France set out for South Africa, the wits of the boulcrards amused ''lem elves with Inventing mock tragedies in which figured "LouUu" aud les 7, minis Utile dreaming, let us hope, that Na puleou IV. was indeed ao die in a mca-lie-field in '.uraland by the assegai of a eavige. Africa is a fatal to tbe IJ in.-.-partes. Napoleon I , with whom the line began, died on a rock off the Afri can coast. Prince Napoleon Eugene Louis Jean Joseph Rjnargr.o was bora at the Tuileries March 1C, ISoG. lie was the only son of the late Emperor of the French, Napoleon III , and of the E n press Eugene de Guixan, Porto-Garrero aid Palafax, fourteenth Countess of Tsbaa lady of illustrious Spanish blood on one side and on t'.e other of Sou., tisis descent, wbo was the youngest daughter of Count Cipriuno de M ini jo and Mirandn, her sister being the Duch ess of Alva. The boy io his childhood was very delicate and had to bo uursrd with the greatest care till bo r ached the age of eleven. Ho had an English nurse sod a German valet, Ins mother addrtsstd bim io Spanish and his father and his governors in French, ao that the Prince Imperial grew up a linguist and at seven could read and speak four lan guages easily. He was quiet and stu dious, and speit much of the time when kept through the doctoi's orders indoors tu reading bis grand-uncle's campaigns. When be was two years old he was ap pointed Corporal in the Imperial Gtisrd, and at fWe S promoted Sergeant. For bating disobeyed the 11 opresa her Muj. sty caused bis stripes to be taken away from bim and he was reduced to the conks for a whole year, which disgrace very deeply affected him, for he was Very fond of showing off hit uniform be fore the children who were imited to the palace io play with him. His first tutor was a "philosopher" under whose tttchiig the young Prince advanced so rvnidlv that at ono dnv at dessert lie electrified tho diners at tho Tuileries by leuinrking to an Austrian Archduke that his ideas were those of tbe old limes that bad parsed by. "The peo ple is an ocean; if you resist it, it wi'l sweep you airaj." General Frossnrt was bis next governor a clear strate gist on paper aid a fair average scho'ar io whoso charge the Priice and his young companion, Louis Cm-nt-au, son of the faithful surgeon nho had assisted Napolaon III. to escape from the Castle of Ham made fair prog ress. While a child he traveled much io France, and not a few interesting anecdotes are told of his life at this period, as of his presiding at tbo Sor bonne in 1SC8, when the pr'zej were awarded to the students of the Parisian schools when General Cavaignac's widow, her sou's iiame lei g called, rose and amid a scene of great excite ment forbade, bim to receive his prize from the Prince. A still more pathetic story has escaped most of the clir.ini rjueurs. With his father the Prince In perinl saw Isabella II. and her son Al fonso driving rapidly iuto Riaritz, both of them in team, on thir way from Spain. "Where is the little boy going tu?" asked tlie Prince. "To exile," an swered the Eintcror. "And what is exile?" tho 'child pcrsis'oil. "0, that ill be explained to you nhn you grow up," ntiswcred his rather. The meaning of the word ''cxilu" was to bo explained long before he grew up to the son of hugcnie. In July, 18(0, tbe war with Prussia broke out, and his health having meanwhile greatly im proved, be accompanied his father to tho front and received his tneiuoralle "oaptism oi lire ul ftaaroriicK. "Jiuis has just received his baptism of fire," tho Emperor telegraphed to his wife. ' He showed admirable coolness and was not at all affected. We were in the front rank, but the bullets and cannon-halls fell at our feet. Louis has kept a bullet which fell quite close to him. S i me of the aohliers wept nt seeing him so calm." R it in a few days the whole situation of affairs was changed. Just before the battle of Sedau the Prince wns sip irate J from his father and sent across the lines into Belgium. He cscatied from the Hotel de la Couranne at M ins nt liipjit and tried to make his way back to his father but itns politely stoppad and recon ducted to the hotel, from which two equerries the next day conveyed him to Dover, where he landed brptcmber C, his mother j lining him at Hastings three day later. Subsequently with his illustrious parents the l'.inco Imperial resided at Ctiisclliurst, The Prince joined the Royal Military Academy nt Wnohvich as a gentleman cadet and pursued his studies without interm'ssion (save lor a brief period at the death of his father in February, 1873) till February, 1875, when be passed his final ( x:imi-:ation, standing seventh in a class of thirty-four, a posi tion which would have entitled him, had he desired to enter the Eritisk Army, to elect service in the engineers or artillery. He was a general favorite with the cadets, among whom he left the reputa tion of a quiet, thoughtful youth of fair parts and much application. There is a remaikable bust of him io the west room at Shccburyoess, taken under droll circumstances. A pupil at Woolwich, who had a taste for sculpturing, asked the Prince to allow him to take a cast of his fuce. The request was a jke, but the Prince entered into it nu scricux. A mold of soft clay was prepared, and H. I. H. was bidden to kneel down and impress his face into it. He did so naively, but the boaxer, not conteo', caught him by the nape ol the netk and thrust bijj as deep as he could into tho soft mass. Into the mold thus formed quantity of liauij plaster was poured ; but, through some accident, the dimei liuns of the nose were enormous not less than tei inches. The Prince laughed gend-'iumoredly at the fnn ; but the whole thinn was d me to some purpose, for the bust still remains. On coming of age Puiice Louis Na poleoo wns formally acknowledged by the imperialists as the head of the fam ily, ana much anxious tnourht was given to the q icsti in, Whom sh mi l he marry? The Princess Beatrice, a Scau- diuavian princess and lastly tle Piincess Thyra of Deomaik, now Duchess ol Cumberland, were all mentioned, and for some lima the well-in-formerl cor- respon Jems busied themselves io set tliig the question of the marriage settle- raeiils, b t nothing came of all the gossip. When uext his name came be fore the world it was on tbe 2G.h of February last, when the London Stand ard announced that the tx-Piince Im perial would sail on tho morrow for South Africa, intending tu j tin as a vol uutccr tbo column winch was likely to bave tbe sharpest li 'Mm, bis earnest petition for a commission iu the R.itish .vmv Having been rejected, lie was, however, to ho pcrmiucj to j in the staff of the Royal Ar;illery. The t-xt of tin letter to M. K;ulier on this icca tion was as follows : "My Di aii M. Roiin.r. : I am ubout to quit Europe and my absence n ay last some months. I have too many faithful fi lends in I' ranee to think it possible for ni c to keep silence on the reasons of my departure, lor eight years I have been tbo guest of England 1 have completed my education in oue of bcr military schools and on several occasions I have strengthened tho bonds which connect me with the h:inluh Army by sharing in tbe great ruanceuvrcs it has executed, I he war which Jvg land baa fur more than a venr been car rying on at the Cape of Good Hope has just assumed a cbuacter or gravity which it had not till now possessed. I desire to follow the operatioos, and em bark in two dais. In France, where thank God, parly spirit has not destroyed tbi military spirit, it will bo felt that did not wish to remain a stra-iger to the luttgues nnu dangers ol those among whom I count io many comrades, The time I shall devoto to witnessinc th conflict of civilization agait st barbarism win not oc lust lor mo. Arar, as near, my thoughts will cm.s'.antly be directed towards France. I shall watch with in terest and without disquietude the grad ual phases she will pais through, for I am certain God protects her, I am cottaio that during my absence the par tisans of the imperial cause will remain united and confident, and will continue to give the country the spectacle of a puty which, faithful toils doctrines, re ruuir.s ever animated by sentiments of the most aident patriotism. Accept, my dear M. llouher, tho assurance of my sincere Irieudsbip, Nai'olkon. "Camden place, Chisclhursl, February 25, WJ.
