Men must now turn their attention to an) thing that will pay, and that sheep husbandry can be made to pay well in this portion of Vir ginia have not the least doubt, l'lease oote the following paragraph : Henry S Randall, in his "Sheep Hus bandry," after a survey of the physical features and climate of the S lulheni States, says, on page 11: "The fore going facts show that the Southern S ates have already all that is necessary to feed stock and furUluo their fields. A lirge proportion of the tidewater t rue, now so unproductive, can be Converted into grazing lands which will ield as good a per cent, ou present capital and investment as the best cotton lands, and produce wool at a less expense per pound thai any regi in of the United S ates north of tbe Potomac." (Itil cs bis) The same is true, he asserts to a greater degree of the Piedmont and mountain sections. The whole lone and tenor of Mr Ihndall's book is es pecially fsvorable to our section as a field for this business. 1!j it observed that he says we have already all that is necessary to feed stock. Io this he alluJci to our native grasses and the Soutbero field pen, which be rec or agenda very highly as food for the sheep, eteewing it ' a full equivalent for the clover of the North." living abun dance of suitable and cheap lanl, and able to possess the materials to feed this animal economically facts that we need not here attempt to prove let us tee if there ciu ba any uiuoey in llii. business. Without burdening the Column with a long array of figures and estimates, we will ssseit (hul we challenge anv man to disprove) that it does nut gist as much to raise a pound of wool as it does to produce a pound of c itton ; yet the wool is well knftwti to be worth from three to five times as much in the mar ket. 0 unit all cost and give the sherp as much range as they ean pm-siily bead, and see if it Is not so. o growing, then, is at least three times as remunerative as cotton growing ; but wool is but the only profit to be derived from sheep. There is the aunual yield of lsaib, a very important item, whether we desire them for the increase of the fl cki or f.ir market, an I the con tinued improvement of the laud arising from the daily, etoanst hourly, dropping, of the flick. We fl id, then in sheep husbtudry three sources of profit, while fmm eotto'i and most other crops we seldom ..ok for more than one, To say nothing of the rest, as an imnrover of Und alone the sheep is well worth the atteution and fostering hand of tbe Southern farmer. Or. zither never so cl tsely. liter alwavs return mora tithe pasture than they taku from it, and uoer aba nw; p-it.n'.'uui grasses spnn up in the place of the eoarse material they at first find. This is no theory, tut the testimony of old and experienced shepherds. The business is a light and pleasant occupation, it culls for little or oo hind help except it may be at shearing time, and the owner, if he follows this aline, escaps the heavy and incresant toil in cident to the life of the p'anter. l'i t we do out advise any one to go into Ibis as an exclusive business. We have ample room in our S'ate to prosecute this side by side and upon the san e farm with planting and other branches of husbandry. N farm should be wit' out iu fl ck of sheep, as many at first as the f r d will sustain conveniently, and let the business grow and develop in a oatural way. The world cannot yet do without our cotton and tobacco, neither cm it do without wool, and if we do not get bett r paid for the former tb D b; i Oeen thu lustons recently, we siiould look to our interest and undertake tbe latter to help out with Wool is just as importaat an article lor dress as cotton, and being more profitable to the pro ducer we do not see the need of any other argument to make it a popular lahor with our people. The often advanced objection about the dog being destructive to this branch of stock raising has absolutely no foun dation in common sense. No Sock of sheep should ever go at large range io pastures or on the commons unattended by a speaker or a shepherd, and it would be a very poor keeper indeed, as sisted by his gun and a boy as be genii erally would be, who could not keep two or three dogs trom harming a sin gle sheep. I)oes seldom hunt sheep in bauds ut more than two or three to gether, and very rarely in day time, and every flock should be taken at nightfall to a safe picketted enclosure near the d selling of the keeper, and there made sure against harm from dogs at night. To buy a fl ik of sheep and turn ihcm upon the commons without keeper or attendant, and expect that dogs will not worry them and diminish their numbers, is the sheerest piece of nonsense our people were e'er guilty of. Is there any occupation that will prof per without some attention? Slieep husbandry calls for as little of it as al' most any that could be named, but even that will not succeed without some little of it. Trusting that these remarks will at least elecit some inquiry among readers, and put them to figuring as to f xpen ses and profits we leave fir the prese t a sut j"Ct where the temptation is great t ) indulge in some speculation, if not rhetoric There is a poetical as well as prosaic side to the theme; some of the finest literature of the world is woven into tliii interesting occupation ; but the money value is the chief attraction for the many, nnd we can safely say that wc know of nothing that promises such liberal returns for the amount of labor and capital to be invested. It is des lined to become a leading industry here. It is eminently the stock for Ibis sec tion. Index-Appeal.
