Mil A. C. Melke, a wealthy mer
chant of I.iimborton, who died la-t week
has left Wake Forest College 825,000;
the baptist Orphanage $5,000; Baptist
school at Lumber Urn $15,000, and
$0,000 fur an endowment for aged and
iulirin ministers. These are noble be
quests, and it would be gratifying to
know there were many such men in North
Carolina.
PiiovEsson Georue D. Winston wr.
last week elected president of the Univer
sity by a unanimous vote of the tiustecs.
He is highly spokeu of as a man and an
educator and the unanimity with which
he was elected shows how well he is
qualified for the position. He is in the
prime of life, being only li'J years of age,
and has been identified with the Univei
ity for sixteen years, and is familiar with
its machinery and history.
TllE Raleigh Chronicle has been much
improved lately by its new deparlure. it
is now an eight page daily, gets all the
associated press dispatches and has a
special wire for the purpose in its own
office. It is not fair to judge a paper by
its first few issues after iuiportaut changes
have been made in its make up, &c., but
the Chronicle could well bear close criti
cism on its first appearance as an eight
page daily. We wish the paper and its
editor the success they deserve.
The Board of Canvassers of Warren
county was acquitted in the Federal
court at Raleigh Saturday. The charge
against them was the rejection of returns
from a certain precinct. It was admitted
that the returns were thrown out, and
Judge Russell fur the prosecution asked
a conviction on the admission without
consideration of the motive. Judge
Seymour charged the jury that an ini
proper motive must be shown. This is
the third time these cases havebeeu be
fore the court. The New Hanover
ciunty casts, which were of a similar na
ture, were nol. pressed.
In an interview with a newspaper cor
respondent a few days ago the Rev. Buy
lus Cade, editor of the I'my rewire Fir
mer, said the editorial in his paper rela
tive to the Third Party put the whole
case hypothetical!)', lie further said
"it cannot be fairly considered to mean
that we are in favor of a third party.
The Alliance as an organization is nut a
partisan institution at all. As long as
the Democrats stand by their present
platfurui in this State there is no ground
for independent action here. I have not
seen a single Alliance man who favors :
the People's party, nor have I heard sin :
intimation that any person thought the
editorial was a declaration for a third ,
party."
He further said he would like to see
all that the Alliance demands conceded ;
and this quest iou of a third party elim
inated fro'n polities altogether. The
Progressive Farmer has been striving to ;
accomplish that.
Wl'.en asked "Do you favor the IVo
p'e's Party?" replied:
"I t!o not favor the People's party
sive as a hist resort. If it shall turn out
that the people cannot secure the rclorms
in the public administration which are
known to be necessary to the' prosperity
of the country withiu the old parties then
and then only the people will net wisely
to turn away from them and form a peo j
pie's party. j
On Wednesday night last some one j
set fire to the barn of Joel Gardener, a
wealthy farmer of Pitt coutity, and while
he and his wife were trying to extinguish
it his dwelling was entered a trunk con
taining $5,000 in money and valuable
papers was carried away.
A grand Alliance mass meeting will be
held at Goldsboro on the 27th inst. Sen
ator Peffer and President Polk will he
present and make addresses; there will
also be other prominent speakers. This
meeting is for the eastern part of the
State. On the 2(5th of August a similar
meeting will be held at Ctiarlotte.
The writer enjoyed the privilege of
attending the recent commencement ex
ercises of Littleton Female College, which
were held on Wednesday and Thursday,
June 3d and -Ith. He does not hesitate
to say that they were a complete success.
There were good audiences present at
all the exercises which were enjoyed by
every one.
First in the programme was the annual
sermon which was delivered in the Meth
odist church, on Wednesday at 11 o'clock
by Rev. F. D. Swindell, of the N. C
conference. The text was taken from
Romans 2 chapter, 0th and 7th verses,
and the sermon which followed was ex-
celleut in thought, chaste in language,
and was delivered in Mr. Sw.ndeH's easy
graceful style. We are of the opinii n
that it was thoroughly enjoyed by the
whole congregation present. The elo
quent preacher spoke only forty minutes
but on account of his rapid flow of lan
guage a great deal was said in that time
and much sound advice and encourage
ment were given to the young ladies of
the College.
The Elocution exercises at the College
chapel on Wednesday evening at Sil!1
! o'clock were a decided success, and amused
as well as pleased all who were so 1'ortu
nate as to be present. The students in
these exercises as well as in all the exer
cises ot the commencement occasion
showed the careful training of their ex
perienced teachers.
The graduating exercises proper took
place in the College Chapel Thursday
morning at 10 o'clock. There were ouly
three young ladies graduated, namely:
Misses Alice H. Spruill, Emma A. Stem,
and Nannie V. Shaw. It is only just to
say that the essays read by these young
ladies were well prepared and were of a
very high order indeed. Without speak
ing disparagingly of any we will say that
in our judgment the oue read by Miss
Spruill was specially good. The diplo
m is were presented by the Rev. F. D.
Swindell, President of the Board of
Trustees, in a short speech which was a
perfect gem, and delighted all who heard
it. TIk Bibles were presented by the
Rev. A. MeCullen, of Warrenton, with
a few timely and well chosen remarks
concerning the Book of books. The
graduation medals, or badges, were pre-
setited to the youug ladies by Rev. R. O
Burton in an apt and amusing speech
. which caused a ripple of laughter over
! the entire audience.
On account of the large crowd that
i was present, it was thought best, as the
chapel was not large enough to cat them,
1 to repair to the Methodist church, where
' the annual literary address was delivered
; by the Rev. W. S. Rone, of the N. C
Conference, at 12 o'clock, Mr Rone so
leeted for his subject, "Susannah Wesley;
Woman Considered from Her as a Mod
el." Mr. Rone is a line speaker, and for
about three quarters of an lo ur held the
large audience in rapt attention. His ad
; dress was considered bv all who heard it
I as a very brilliant effort, and will not soon
be forgotten bv at least some of the nudi-
! enee. We heard some very complimen
I tary remarks about the addtess, as well as
i the sermon.
: We could not stay to attend the con
! cert on Thursday night, but we have no
d Mil t was as good as wba' preceded it
Take if all in all we repeat that it was a
: very line success.
An alumna? association was organized
: and with Miss Mallie Wvehe president
i Miss Lucy Spruill, vice-president and
Miss Annie Brown, of Pitt, secretary.
