Bridge Across the Canal. The
Seaboard road is busily at work con
structing an iron bridge across the canal.
It will have only one track, instead of
five or six as at present. This will give
the roads less room in that part of the
yard, and will consequently entail incon
venience upon them. It will be some
time we suppose before tho bridge will
be completed. It will bu of one span
seventy feet oay.
Said a gcnt'ciuan the other day,

There were 117- matriculates. We
note that President has resigned in order
to accept the Chair of History, recently
established.
Grand P icnic. There will be a
grand basket picnic at Great Falls on
the !Uh of July next. Everybody iu
Halifax and Northampton counties is in
vited, and it is expected that everyone
will carry a basket of edibles. Tho affair
will certainly bo a most enjoyable one for
all who attend. The location is a most
picturesque one, and the scenery is grand,
there being no finer in the eastern part
of the State. Among the managers are
T. L. Emry, 11. W. Brown, D. B. Zolli-
coffer, B. A. Pope.!1- Hansom, W. W.
Hall, M. J. Squire.
Buy a Hen. Too poor to taken
home paper. Well, that is a distressful
condition. Buy a hen, feed her on
crumbs and waste from the kitchen and
she will lay eggs enough to pay for a
year's subscription; then work her up in
a pot pie and she will pay first cost, so
the papjpr will bo clear profit. Repeat
this process year after year and you will
see how easy it is to pay for your home
paper. Exchange.
This advice would be excellent if it
was not for the fact that nine out of ten
who don't take a paper don't know how
to set the hen.
The Colored Fair. John II. Wil
liamson, secretary of the Carolina In
dustrial Association, addressed tho color
ed people of Halifax Thursday night in
the interest of the fair of the association.
This fall the fair will be held in conjunc
tion with the inter-Stato Exposition of
Raleigh, and as the exhibits will le .cnt to
Chicago and the Rev. J. C. Price of this
State is in charge of tha colored depart
ment the negroes of this State should
make an extra effort to have a large nod
creditab'e exposition. Secretary William
son has for several months been canvass
ing the Eastern counties in the interest
of the fair.
West Weldon Improvement and
Manufacturing Company. The er.
giueors who have takeu the contract to
lay off the town of West Weldon have
begun work and expect to complete the
work in sixty days. The town will le
well situated, on rolling land aud will be
a most desirable place of residence.
Mr. James S. Battle, Secretary of the
Company, has entered upon his duties
aud the whole work will be rapidly
pushed. Mr. Battle is eminently quali
fijd for the rei-poiiMblo position, haviug
bad experience in similar work in Ashe
vine, being a man ot extensive acquaint-
anco throughout the country. Hisselec
uon dv tne company was a most wise
one.

Rice on Roanoke Bottoms. Mr,
H. J. Pope, Superintendent of the State
farms, has among a variety of other ex
periments planted fifteen acres in rice on
the bottom lands of the State farms.
This came up very well and there was a
good stand. When it was two or three
iuches high the river rose and about ten
feet of water stood on the rice for at least
twenty four hours. When it went off
the rice was in no wjy injured, but was
iu as good condition and looked as well
as it did before the freshet. ' The deposit
of mud on the plants did not injure them
at all. If this experiment results in de
veloping the fact that Roanoke bo'totu
lands can grow rice regardless of freshets
their value will iucrease one hundred
per cent, or more. A fair yield of rice is
one hundred bushels per aore and the
avi rage priee is about 1 50 per bushel.
Owners of river lands will watch this ex
periment with great interest.
Deafness Caii't bo t'ui ttl
by local applications, as they cannot raeh
the diseased portion of the ear. There
is only one way to oure lealness and that
is by cuiHitutimial remedies. Deal'uess
is caused by an inflatumaiton of the mucous
lining of thu Eustachian Tube. When
this tube g'.'ts inflamed you have a rum
bling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed deafness is the
result, and unlc.vt the infl.iiiiiuation can
be taken out, and this tube restored to
its normal condition, hearing will he de
stroyed forever, nine cases out of ten are
caused by catarrh, which is nothing but
an inflamed condition of the mucous sur
faces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any cane ul deafness (caused by catarrh)
that we cannot cured by taking Hall's.

Suggestions to. the Railroads
which May Prove Va liable.
Railroad trains are in the habit of passing
through town so rapidly that it would
frequently be impossible for them to stop
should there be occasion for it. This
loos not seem to be necessary, and en
dangers the lives of citizens. It would
be wise if the railroad officials would
take care to have trains under complete
control of the engineers at all times, but
they do not. We have seen both passen
ger and freight trains come in and go
out of town at a speed which is not al
lowed anywhere else and the Board of
Commissioners is respectfully requested
to take this matter into consideration.
On a Charge of Burglary.
George Foreman, colored, about 35 or
41) years old, was taken to Halifax jail
Monday morning on thechargeof having
burglariously entered the houso of Mr.
Wiley Cherry, of JWeneiith township.
During the night the daughter of Mr.
Cherry awuke and found Foreman lying
on the bed. She awoke her father who
stood guard over tho negro until help
which had been sent for had arrived.
They tied the negro aud took him be
fore justice Perry, who committed him
to jail to await trial. It seems that the
negro who lived on the lot eutered the
bouse, extinguished a light which was
usually left burning and went to sleep on
tne bed. Itie noise ot talking did not
seem to arouse him. While Sheriff
Alsbrook had him iu custody he proposed
to him to give him a chance by letting
him run and shooting him.
