THE ROANOKE NEWS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMJiER 10, 18H. SAGE AND SAVORY, One way of getting along in this world is to walk. An upright man stands well in the community. Each addition to one's kindred is a relative gain. Where rumor is afloat gossip finds smooth sailing. As trade grows dull competition will begin to sharpen. A fiery temper gives adverse criticism a warm reception. Within tho skeptic's mind there is always room tor doubt. Don't employ the touch of sarcasm if you wish to tickle vanity in the ribs, If one cannot go to sleep, why not wait patiently tor sleep to como to him? Life is a problem which idlers must needs leave unsolved; only tho thrift work it out. When a man begins to show signs of becoming a crunk, the indications are that tie lias reached a turning point in life. THE SAVEJSTKST OF .JOYS. very many ot the sweetest joys of Christain hearts are songs which have been learned in the bitterness of trial. It is said of a little bird' that ho will never learn to sing the song his master will havft him sing while, it is Ymhl in lilM .! He learns a snatch of every song he hears, put win not learn a full separate nielodv : of his own. And the master covers the cae and makes it dark all abou' the bird, and then he listens and learns the one song mat is taught to hnu, until his heart k full of it. Then, ever after, he sings that song in the light. With lliunv nf iid if J w it. as wh the bird. The Master has song he wants to teach us, but we U only a strain of it, a note here and there while we catch up snatches of the world's song, and siug them with it. Then He h and makes it dark about us till we . -rn the sweet melody He would teach us. Many of the loveliest songs of peace and trust sung by God's children in this world they have been taught in the dark ened chambers of sorrow. CONFEDERATE PROHIBITION. "Do you know," said a well known Confederate officer, "that the Confederate government was the only government in the world that really enforced prohibition? Duiing the war the government prohibit ed the manufacture of Honor in Vir,,;.,;.. If. U'.1 llori f iwf h , . "X." tuuv iuu urwy was, aim the same prohibition extended in the other southern States. This law was made h, cause the government wanted all thn grain to feed the people. The further result was that the Confederate armv w the soberest army that the world ever had. The little li.juor that could bo had was only obtamed upon the nreserin. tionof a physician. The first three barrels of liquor for medicinal purposes were sent under guard throught West Virginia and consigned to a leadin? sur. geon. They were carted over the moun tains and several days we ro occupied in the trip At their destination the bar. rels were found to be empty. At first that was n mystery, but an examination showed that a gimlet hole had been bored in each cask, the liquor drawn out and the hole neatly plugged. The whole battalion sent along as guards for the liquor had in this way swallowed it all gradually, and though a big row was raised, it was impossible to fix the offense on any one." New York Sun. LADIUS, STAY IX BED. WHAT A WOMAN CAN DO- She can come to a conclusion, and gen erally a good one, without the slightest trouble of reasoning on it; and no sane man can do that. Six of them can talk at once and get along first-rate, and no two men can do that. She can safely stick fifty pins in her dress while he is getting one under his thumb nail. She is cool as a cucumber in half a dozen tight dresses and skirts, while a man will sweat and fume and crowl in one loose shirt. She can talk as sweet as peaches and cream to the woman she hates, while two men would be punching each other's heads before they had exchanged ten words. bhe can throw a stone with a curve that would be a fortune to a base ball pitcher. She can say "no" in such a low voice that it means "yes." She can sharpen a led pencil, if vou give her plenty of time and plenty of pf n cils. She can dance all night in a pair of shoes two sizes too small for her. and on- joy every minute of the time. bhe can appreciate a kiss from her husband seventv-five years after the marriage ceremony is performed, bhe can but what's the use a wo man can do anything orevervthimr. and , , C3' do it well. She can do more in a minute in marv ways than a man can do in an hour, and do it better. NEW ADVE11TISKENTS. I muffin mini if-J jr-toMlmiimimtft liiimmmmm A n Polly Poppers say that early rising wears out women too fast: "I notice that our thrifty great aunts and grandmothers had a habit of dying early and giving their husbands an opportunity of leadiog two or three blushing brides to the altar. Now, I don't propose to leave any chauce for my husband to get any such troublo or triple bliss as that. I don't intend to have any other woman walking round in y shoes, appropriating my LiMM aud doing other disagreeable things which I should object to. I mean to tako care of myself so as to last as long as my bet ter half. No woman has any business, ordinarily, to get up and go to work at four or five o'clock in the morning. If there U anything in the world that a woman needs it is plenty or rest. If she feels tired and languid in the morning and hates to get up, it is a sure sign she w overdoing and wearing out. Six o'clock is as early as anyone ought to get up and go to work. , . ' ' Anxious mother "As I passed the parlor door last evening I saw Mr. Nice fellow's face very, very close to yours." Lovely daughtei " Yes, ma, he's 0 near sighted." 'REELECTIONS. Bread cast upon the water purelv as a business speculation is liable to sink he. fore reaching port. Don't worry your brain about the man in the moon, but study the man in your own overcoat. The true prince will find it easier to disguise himself than the world would have him believe. ' There are always plenty of rrood fish in the sea, but thousands of worthy in- land people can never get to the seashore. The dog that bays the moon is wiser than the one that bays a bigger do.? that is viciously luciined. Tact can afford to smile while "enius and talent are quarreling. Both courage and fear owe much to the armed neutrality of prudence. When impudence dons the mask of repartee, it is time for the company to disperse for the night. The seeming length of a sermon is generally proportioned to its needs. It is expensive economy to make a part of the truth suffice for the whole. A man cannot be truly eloquent if ho knows not how to listen. Beware of the vicious man who pro poses to reform his life on the instalment plan. Virtue and laziness may live together but they are not usually on the best terms. No sagacious wise man will quarrel with his own opportunities bv lamenting the abundance of fools in the world. There is many a rogue in the world who objects to tho Ten Commandments on account of their hackneyed ideas and the lack of originality.
