town are jubilant at securing railroad
transportation.
Tiik Convicts and tiik Grippe.
Tho grippe is norespector of persons and
lias invaded tho penitintiary stockades
and cells at the State farms in this and
Northampton counties. On the farms
near here forty cases have been reported
though none of them have proved fatal.
At Caledonia a largo number of convicts
have succumbed to it, uud eight deaths
have resulted.

evening at the Episcopal Chnreh st. 7:3il
o'olock, it being the regular weekly ap
pointmont for evening prayer, there will
be services by the rector, including a
lecture appropriate to the season. The
members of the congregation are especially

Mr. Sanford Pepper, an old and greatly re
spected citizen of this county, died at big
home about two miles from town on
Tuesday night. Mr. Pepper had been
in very poor health for about two months

Tub Weather. The weather has
been quite changeable lately, though
there has been but littlo extremely cold
weather. Christmas day was the war
mest ever known in this community, and
os Tuesday night wo were treated to a
thunder storm which would have done
credit to midsummer. Nearly all real
wititer weather occurs of late years after
Christmas, and we may expect to have
plenty of it before spring opens.

mother has been an iuvalid for fourteen
years, four of the children aro deaf and
dumb, and consequently have not been
developed mentally and are entirely help
less. One of the four who is eighteen
years old, only weighs about thirty-five
pounds and is bed ridden. The father,
who is a hard working farmer, has only
an ox to cultivate his land and this year
made almost nothing. Ou Christmas a
number of the good people of Littleton
and Weldon sent them a very much
needed supply 0f clothing and provisions.
This is a case worthy of help from the
county commissioners and we hope it
will ba brought to their attention.
