Salisbury has contracted for a complete
system of sewerage, and Chapel Hill is
arranging for water works.
There are seventy railroads in the State
and their total length is 3,548 miles a
gain of fifty per cent, in nine years.
Thus far 110 complaints have been
filed in the railroad commission office
since its organization in April of last
year.
A canning company at Southport is
now engaged in putting up clams. They
have an order for 20,000 cans to be fill
ed in August and September.
The Winston water company will ex
pend 870,000 for additional water sup
ply, putting in another pump with a ca
pacity of 1,500,000 gallons daily.
The buildings for the Presbyterian
Orphan Asylum at Barium Springs are
now ready for the roof and will be com'
ploted by September. This is the fifth
institution of the kind to be established
in the State.
A fire occurred at Alma, on the Caro
lina Central road, Thursday, destroying
saw and plaining mills, lumber, two box
cars and other property. The loss is
$17,000, which was covered was covered
by insurauce.
The remains of Chapman Gordon,
who died and was buried near Wilkes
boro seventy seven years ago, were ex
humed a few days ago and placed in a
gr-ve over which the new Presbyterian
church will stand. There was uothing
found in the grave except bones, which
were in a perfect state of preservation.
Mr. Gordon was the grandfather of Gen.
John R. Gordon, of Georgia.
There will be a meeting at Morehead
City on August 10, of representatives of
various chambcis of commerce and other
business organizations Ht which the ques
tions of litra'ur to he distributed at the
World's Fair, permanent exhibition of
the State's resources, establishment if a
bureau of information, taxation (especial
ly the merchants purchase tax) otu , will
bo discussed.
A movement is on foot for the erection
of a largo hotel on the surf i-ide of Bogue
b ulks ai Morehead. It is proposed to
rai.vj 8150.000 for the hotel and outlying
improvements and to have it ready fur
guests with the beginning of the next
season. It i proposed also tJ connect
the bauks with Morehead, across the
sound, either by an elcctiic tailway or a
steam ferry. There is a smo"th beach
twenty-five" miles long and the surf will
be withiu a few yards of the hotel. The
beach will be lighted with electric lights.

men entered the stable ef Mr. C. H. B.
Howerton,at Halifax stole two horscs,with
bridles and saddles,and rode them off. The
herses were found in a field of Air. Ilaui
ill's at Mr. W. II. Sledge's place, Sunday
morning. The bridles and saddles have
not been found.
State Pensions. Clerk Gregory of

been busy preparing papers for pensious

Gen. Houun's Residence. Last
week wo published a sketch of the Revo
lutionary hero General James Ilogun, of
this county, from the pen of Judge
Walter Clark. Judge Clark now in
forms us that the residence of General
Hogun was where the late L. L, Savage
lived, in Palmyra township, about one
mile from Hobgood. The place was con
veyed by the heirs of General Hogun
about the year 1818.

white people and nothing will be easier,
they think, than for the Republicans to
step in and carry the election. Third
Party men ought to see the result of their
course. It will help the Republicans
and nobody else.
