EN FIELD.
We wore gla l to See the Rev. James
P. Simpson on the Mnvt a few days a.
We had also u rail i'roia him. Sevoial
weeks iiju ho was vry isielv hut I am
glad to say that h" it I'i'cI'.ii and looking
very well now. II" told your corres
pondent that in tho eiirht, years lie has
been living in ihis plane there have been
forty dentils amon the whiles, live oi'
whom did not live in town hut
were visitine; here or were
brought here while sick to some of their
relatives. I i is memory is so very good
that he named every one of them and
remembers, the year they died.
Sec in; much lumber passing here I
made enquiry of the li.il a:;e:)t. as to how
unteh lumber was shipped from this place
last week. The accommodating; agent
looked over his books and gave mo the
surprising answer "thirty-eiirh t. ear loads. "
I think that a good showing for Knfield.
Miss Annie lleptinstai, one of Kn
field's charming daughters, left, Sunday
for Kooky Mount where she will spend
several days with friends.
Miss Minnie Whitaker left Monday
for Baltimore on a two weeks' visit.
Mr. (.ieorge 13. Curtis, who went to
Ocean View, the Hammocks and Camp
Holt, returned and reported having had a
good time.
Capt. li. 0. Whitaker and family, of
Fayettcville, are here visiting his parents.
Some of the farmers are complaining
of the dry weather. They think it will
injure the corn aud cotton.
Col. 11. l'artin and Capt. George A.
Ueptinstal! went over oh, no, started
over to Whitakcrs last Thursday night
to se Home young ladies. They got to
t h e swamp about two miles
from town when the horso thought of
something he h:'d fotttotten. He. stopp
ed and turned over in hi.s mind what to do.
The Capt., who was in command, did not
like it, so ho got down in the mud to ar
gue with the horse, but could not erm
viiica him that it as best to proceed. Then
the Col. thought he'd have more influence
so ho began lirst to argue, then to plead
and then to coax him, but no go. Col.
P. then went to the ooru field and get
him a few blades of fodder. "George,
I'll bet he'll go now," said he. lie put
the fodder over his shoulder, went to the
horse's head and started slowly. The
horse made two steps then stopped, and
looked meaningly at (apt. II., as if he
wanted to say, "you can't fool me." They
could do nothing with the horse, so they
had to comeback. When they left town
they looked like two dudes, but when
they eatne back they looked like well,
I'll say two muddy individuals. M.

paper known as the Littleton Courier,
a weekly Democratic paper. -
CoL W. A. Johnston is very siek, we
are sorry to say. Wo hope it will only
be a short time before ho will be out

There Was a large crowd in town last
Saturday. Capt. J. P. Leach and M. W.
Rosser addressed the people ou the issues
of the day.
We learned that your distinguished
townsman, Hon. W. II. Day, made it
lively for the Third party last Saturday
at Aurelian Spriugs.
Our leaders seem to bo energetically at
work and if the people don't vote right
this fall it will not be the fault of our
leaders.
Crops in this section are suffering
right much now on account of dry
weather.
i Mrs. W. B. Finch left last Saturday
' to see her sister, Mrs. W. II. Vasser, near
Garysburg and also to attend the burial
of W. II. Vasser.
Mr. Norman Shaw, of Warrentoo,
formerly a student of Littleton High

BRINKLEYVILLE.
We had the plea-uro on Friday la-t of
heaving that p'.Wcll'ili speaker, Capt.
Octavitis Coke, at Kingwood, and we wi-li
we I'eit able to give ewu an outline of his
remarks. Hi-talk was on the danger of
a division of the Democratic party, tar: If,
Ale., and his laniriiage was chaste ami elo
quent, and his p.jwer of persuasion seemed
ubcist inv-e-iuo'e. His statements ot
the true Hate ot allocs was so plain and
withal so gentlemanly sdvam-ed, that we
wish every Third party man in the county
could have heard it We feel sure that
every sensible man in the party would
certainly have l'elt the foree of Ids argu
inents and by them turned irotn the error
of their ways beforu it is everlastingly too
late. United we stand, divided wo fall,
is a truism that needs uo repetition. We
think such a speech is calculated to do
great good aud we wish every man in
Halifax county coald have heard him,
His audience though small paid the
closest attention, and we all went home
f'eeliug more loyal to the State and to true
Democracy ior having heard such a
speech.
The backbone of the hot spoil seems to
be broken atla.,t and all welcome a lower
temperature.
The crops iu this immediate vicinity
never looked better and verily the farm

of a plenty of meat and bread next year.

A private letter received in the city,
says that Senator Vance is slowly, but
steadily improving at Gombroon, his
mountain home, and that the chances for
his eventual relocation to health are
good. A representative of the llieh
mond Di-pat eh called on Senator Vance,
a few days ago, and his report is also
favorable. He says that "the Senator
was found with some books and pupers
before him, sitting on the front porch,
some o.'illt) feet above the sea level, lie
has been here just one week, and a de

Th Quarterly Review says tho rattle
snake's rattle is like the sound which
would be produced by the rattling of a
number of peas in a paper bug. This
represents the slightncss of the sound.
We tire accustomed to pictorial represen
tations in which the reptile is made to
look very angry and energetic, tho tail
erect in a maimer to suggest a loud alarm.
Accordingly when one hears it for the
first time one is so surprised to find tho
noise so slight. Iho sound, instead of
being a rattle, is rather a tiukle, and per
haps it has a rather more metallic charac
ter than ihe motion of the shakiug of
peas iu a paper bag would represent. But
slight as the sound is, the person who has
never met one of these reptiles before and
who, without seeing the snake, hears for
the first timu among mountain rocks or
prairie its delicate yet distinct warning
knows instantly who and what his neigh
bor is.

A DEADLY WEAl'OX,
A cie:e somewhat out of the ordinary
was that of the State vs. J. II. Sunnmr
for assault, in the Criminal Court on
Thursday, heard by Judge II. Base m
Carter. Tiie prosecuting witness in ti e
ease was .J. 11. Ltnee, who testified that
the defend nil assaulted biin with a rock.
In answer to this Mr. Summer set up a
plea of self defense, in that the witness
had first assaulted him with a deadly
weapon, to wit, a mule. Judge Carter,
knowing the general reputation of the
muli! kind, whether by experience or not
deponent saith not, inquired which end
of the mule was coming toward Mr. Sum
mer. The witness replied that the rear
portion of thi! mule, generally adjudged
the business end, came first. The court
thereupon held that the mule was a
deadly weapon and instructed thejuiy to
find accordingly. Mr. Summer was
not introduced iu court. Ashoviiie Citi

A'tfio Bern Journal.
A gentleman in Richmond wanted to
purchase a pocket knife, and was shown
one of the Roger's two-bladed kind
which, before the McKinley tariff, cost
fifty cents. On offering to pay that sum
for it he was told that the price of that
knife now was sixty-five cents, but that
there was a yankee knife made to look
exactly like it which was sold for fifty
cents. On examining the latter he found
it was not worth half the money, and so
he paid tho extra fifteen c:nt3 and took
the Rogers' at , icle. Here is a practical
home illustration of how McKinleyism
enables northern manufacturers to impose
worthless goods on a helpless purchasing
public at high prices, and how the for
eigners pays the tax for the support of
the government.
CAN THIS ISE TRUE.
The Shelby Review says : There is
an old man in No. 5 townsliio who some
time ao deeded his property to his son
upon the agreement that the son should
care for him what little time he had to
live. After getting possession of the
property he drove the old man away.
Some days ago the feeble old man went
back to beg for bread. It was refused
him and he turned back. Feeble from
want of food, bowed down with sorrow
aud humiliation, ho fell exhausted by tho
wayside, where he was found by neigh
bors who took him to a house near by
aud ministered to his needs. Wheu
driven from homo by his inhuman son
the old man was given an asylum by a
daughter, who had been deserted by a
worthless husband who left her destitute.
A LAMP STOItY.
We toil the story as it was told to us.
A very reliable gentleman named Mr.
Jones who lives near tho Raleigh aud
Gaston depot, on yesterday afternoon
during the storm, noticed that his lamp
was burning. He extinguished it, but
iu a moment there came a vivid flash of
lighlniug and the lamp was again lighted.
He concluded that the better part of
wisdom was to remove it the yard, which
he did in quiok order. Perhaps the visi
tation of Mais had something to do with
it. At any rate, it bents Aladdin and
his wonderful lamp" IJ-dciah Visitor.

It has for sometime been understood
that a New York electtieal firm, which
has been experimenting in the application
of electricity to domestic purposes, . was
about to bring out a number of devices
that would efleet a revolution in the art
of housekeeping. This prnmi.-e is ret
unfulfilled. The English, however, have
been forging ahead in the same field and
with most gratifying results. Complete
sets are now being manufactured in Eng
land, by the use of which an immense re
dui'tionin the labor of household duties
can be enjoyed. The sets include an
electric kettle, which boils water a very
few minutes after the switch istuincd, aud
by which an invalid or business man in a
hurry can make hi.s own breakfast with
out trouble. There is also an olectvi :
