The meat was boiled in vater, and t'iken without any vegetables, sauce or anything1 else to make it oat able, ''he microscopic slice, of bad rye. bread driven per man only awoke an in supportable lonirinff for more. After having aten such a would-be dinner in our common dininfr-room, everyone of us took home a small piece of the same, meat, wrapped in a little ray, nnd an other microscopic slice of bread. That was for supper and for breakfast next morning. Hut as we were awfully hungry, the meat and bread were eaten up immediately after reaching home, and then we had for our sole food, or rather drink, in the evening and next .morning, the detestable cake-tea, with out anything else to fill our stomachs." It Was Formerly a Little tireater Than at l'rcsent. The Egyptians were the first people to fix the length of the year. What is known as the "ltoman year" was intro duced by I'.omulus, 7li0 !. Hut the calendar ol Julius was defective in this particular: The real solar rear consists of Illi.") days 5 hours and 49 min utes. This made a difference of eleven minutes bctvVen true solar time and solar time according to Ciesar. At the time of I 'ope liregory XIII. (he became pope in 1""2) that differ ence of but eleven minutes each year hr.d grown to an error of ten whole days. To obviate this error, (Jregory ordained, in 158'i. that that vcar should consist of but 305 days; this change was called the change from the Julian to the (iregorian system of reck oning time. However, all the world, with the exception of Italy and a few inconsiderable countries, reckoned time bv the old Julian style for more than a, hundred years after Gregory had announced the change. In Kngland the (Iregorian system was not recognized until 17.V;, at which time an other whole day of error had been added. Ill the year last mentioned above Kngland and her dependencies, America included, made the change September If of that year, being reck oned as the fourt 'cnth. Russia is the only country of nny importance that still adheres to the old style system. Chicago Herald. J. W. YOUNC. Co Syca. & Bank Sts. Petersburg, oct ly Va THE SUN RECORD. low the Puni'lon of simthlne In Accu rately flanged. Sunshine is recorded at, thn Meteor ological I'lllee in Kngland by means of the Stokes-Campbell instrument, the es-.i-nti.il feature of which is a spherical lens, which acts its a burning glass. As the sun accomplishes its apparent jour ney from east to west, it burns its auto graph into a strip of card placed be neath t he lens, but can only do so when it is anobscured. As the card is divided into hours, it ia eaitv to calculate the amount of actual sunshine with which each day is favored. A report has recently bfn issued giving the results 'achieved by this in strument for the past ten years. From this we learn that our southern coasts are the most suniy ones, if we except the Channel islands, as represented by Jersey, where alone one-half tha possi ble amount of radiance was registered for May ami! August. The east coast of Britain is also decidedly sunny. In the summer and early autumn Ireland shares with the west coast of Scotland the reputation of persistently-clouded skies, but later on, toward November, the observatory in Phoenix park, Dub lin, records the greatest averafe amount of sunshine for that month namely, twenty-eight par cent In the metropolis, as might be expected, the record is bad, the sun failing to leave any trace on the card for mora than one entire month.
