There was not a township in the Co., which was not personally visited by Dr. Green, the County Chairman, and most of thoin more than once. All the committeemen and nearly all Democrats were in touch with the Chairman and there was not a break or mistake during the entire can vass So excellent was the organization and so thoroughly did every one understand his duties, that in the poll of the couuty, reports of which were made each week, the aggregate number of Third party men reported in the county did not vary as much as ten from the number of Third party votes cast in the county. The result of this splendid organiza tion was the largest Democratic majority ever cast in Halifax. Thanksgiving Services. The Rev. P. N. Stainbaek, of this place, will con duct Thanksgiving services at Pleasant Grove, Northampton county, on Thurs day next, Thanksgiving day. The M. E. Church at Seaboard will unite with Pleasant Grove church in these services. At Sbiloh, same couuty, the Rev. J. A. Green, of this place, will conduct service on Thanksgiving day. Halifax The ove rcoat this winter is long and county is the banner county of the State. It gave Carr for Governor the largest majority of any county in the State 220-1 except Johnston which gave twenty-four more; but Weaver's and Exum's vote was larger in Johnston than in ITnlifnv Weldon is the banner township. It gave neither Weaver nor Exuin a single vote, and gave the Third party Legislative ticket tlireo votes, and the candidate lor coroner one. loose. A hot bath will sometimes cure the toothache. Halifax gave Carr the largest ma jority in the State. We beliove in giving the rewards to the workers in the party. Several of our citizens are attending court at Halifax this week. If a'l friendship were as strong as onions, there would be no nnhappiuess. When the wires flashed the announce ment that Cleveland was elected cotton went up a quarter of a cent. Ordination. On Sunday the Rt Rev. T. B. Lyman, Bishop of the dio cese ordained Mr. A. J. Vanderbogart to the diaconate of the Episcopal church in this place. The service was very irnpos ing one, and the church was beautifully decorated fur the occasion with flowers and cvergreeus, The sermon was an able oue, as all of Bishop Lyman's are. The church was full and though the The Election in Halifax. The election passed off quietly in Halifax county, though at one or two precincts trouble was threatened, but was prevented by the coolness und determination of th Democrats. At Brinkleyvllle it was feared that a difficulty might occur, but there was nothing of the kind except a few words. At Palmyra several hundred negroes armed with clubs marched around threatening to tear down the polling booth, but about twenty Democrats, some of them from Seotlnnd Neck, were on nd and prevented any attempt to violate the election law. It had been decided to separate tho Congressional boxes from the others, and this plan was followed at all the precincts except Fau- cetts, where the supervisors took the law into their own hands and took possession of the electoral box also. The electoral box was demanded by the supervisors at his precinct but was refused by the pollholders. At this place tho eloction was especially quiet, and a full vote was not polled. For some reason the Third party tickets were not issued and some who had intended to vote that ticket be came disgusted and declined to vote at all. Others voted the straight Demo cratic ticket. Negroes, too, who had been true to the Republican party, think ing themselves betrayed into endorsing the Third party and then in turn betrayed by that party voted tho Democratic ticket to rebuke those who, they said, had sold them out. . Neither Weaver nor Exum reeeived single vote here and only three Third party votes were cast for tho, Legislative and county tickets. A full table of th official vote of the county will be found elsewhere. The man who can bum a hymn while sermon was long it was greatly enjoyed, putting up a stovepipe, i-hould be taken everybody remaining to the end. The train from ocotalnd Meek brought up a delegation of about fifty, who marched up town to the court house singing cainpiign songs, and each wearing on his breast a large picture of a tiger, bearing the words "Scotland Neck Tammany Hall." When they passed the hotel tbey were loudly cheered and on reaching tho court bouse they were met by Judge Gregory and a general handshaking and congratulations ensued. Alter tins the Scotland Nook boys called for three cheers for Dr. Greon, tho chairman of the Democratic committee, recognizing the able work he had done for the party, nnd they were given with a will. The Board wa organized at 12 o'clock and Col. F. M. Parker made chairman. ll the townships were represented, and tho returns from each townships were read out it ml tabulated, lhere was ap plauses several times during the reading, and when Weldon's returns were read showing that not a single vote bad been cast for Weaver or Exum the applause was greatest and Capt Kitchin proposed three cheers for Weldon, the whitest township in the county, and they were given with a hearty good will. The re turns were then tabulated and the vote entered upon the blanks as required by Ihe Convocation. The Convoea lion of Tarboro convened at Grace hurch Tuesday night with cvenin prayer and an address on St. Andrew brotherhood by Mr. McBee of the Uni versity of the South, who is one of the vice presidents of the national organiza tion. Mr. McBee's address was an able one, and ought to and will have a good effect in this community. Superior Court. The fall term of the Superior court convened at Halifax Monday, Judge Shuford presiding. Tho rand jury was drawn and charged, and J. E. Daniel sworn as officer to attend upon it, Ihe Judges charge was an excellent one and Judge ohutord lias made a most favorable impression upon the people and bar of the county. He remarked that it was the youngest grand jury he had ever seen and that it gratified him to seo it. It may be remarked here that Judge Sbuford's majority in this county was tho largest of all except Mr. Carr's. He received one mere vote than Judge McRae. The grand jury is composed of tho following: F. W. Garrett, foreman. Ivey Allen, James Heptinstall, W. R. Hux, J. H. Pope, J. T. Howell, George Harrison, Charles Brown, W. II. Haw kins, W. E. Fletcher, S. S. Mountcastle, J. L. Batchelor, B. E. Ivey. W. T. Medlin, L. E. Berry, P. E. Lynn.C. P. Rodwell, Clarence Bobbitt. Mr. Garrett is the youngest foreman of a grand jury ever appointed in this county, and he docs his work most efficiently. A true bill was returned against Bill Pittman, Tom AVillcox and Wiley John ston for the murder of Haley Wilkins. Pittman the only one in custody, was arraigned on Monday. A special venire of twenty-five men was ordered and the trial set for Tuesday, but Pittman after being arraigned upon the advice of coun sel, Messrs. Bell, Thorne and T. C. Harrison who had beon assigned by tho court to represent him, pleaded guilty and with the permission of the court turned Mates evidence. Inluruiation given by him implicated Willcox and Johnston who were already connected with the homicide and also Isaac Garrett ami Jacob Crawley. Crawley had al ready fteeti arrested and capiases were scut to Edgecombe county aud Johnston and Garrett were arrested aud taken to Halifax Tuesday. At this writing it had not been determined whether thej would be tried at this tt-rni or not. The Solicitor wauted to try but the defence did not. Pittman was sentenced to foi r months in ihe eounty jail. In the suit of R. G. Ileid against A. W. Shaffer, 0. P. Robinson and G. W. She.irin, U. S. Supervisors for damages tor malicious prosecution the defondents made petition to the Federal circuit court to have the case removed to that court and a copy of the petition and a certio rari was issued from the circuit court to the superior court. The appeal of the men who uiaiiiii-d Richard liurt is pendiog in the Supreme court, tine ot them, who turned Stales evidence, was si'iiteneed to the peniten tiary for five years and is now serving his term. The two others who were sentenced to fifty years imprisonment are the appelauts. The grand jury at this term found a law. It was a happy day for the Democrats, and the enthusiasm was by increased the entrance of Mr. W. E. Daniel whe an nounced that Ohio had gone Democratic. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. !
