THE ROANOKE NEWS. THURSDAY, MAY 10, 1894. Merry May. Lovely flowers. Farewell oysters. The ice men are bappy. Have you been a-Maying? Thermometers are going up. Till ice men arc now at the bat. Who will be Queen of the May ? Strawuerkies are scarco and high. The beautiful roses are now blooming. Everybody goes a Isbing these days. The fishermen are having a very poor season. A lew scattering peaches were left on the trees. The large postal cards are now in little demand. There has been a small run of rock fish this season. The air is filled with the odors of Spring and paint. The only man who loves a dead town is tho undertaker. It is now warm enough for life snake stories to crawl out. Cut worms are said to bo doing mis chief in the county. One can almost see the leaves and gross grow these days. A large acreage of cotton has been p'antcd in this county. Nice rains have fallen throughout this section the past few days. Cqtton is coming up rapidly and the farmers will have a good stand. 1 C nics and excursions wil soon gladden the hearts of pleasure seekers SALL boys look longingly tipon the Hater, which js yot too cold for swim nilng. A good many pear treg have a second orop of peats on them, the first being killed by the freejes in March. The leaves of trees generally get their full growth by the 10th of May, but this year they are a little behind time, We gain no good by wUhlog, But curious still is Fate : One half the world is fishing While the other's digging bait ! Word comes from all quarters that the neatest and most satisfactory dye fur coloring the beard a brown or black is Buckingham's Dye for the Whiskers. A prominent eiliion of the county wants a dog law passed by tho nest Legislature to tax the worthless curs out of existence. What do the poople any? Sewing Machine vor Sale. Last week we Btated that in some parts of the coun try old Confederate stamps were valuable and asked if any of these relies of the Lost Cause" could be resurrected. One of our citizens, Pr. A. R. Zollicoffer, has come forward with a fine collection on the original eovelepcs. Two of the stamps are Petersburg, Va , stamps. Any one desiring to purchase would do well to communicate with him. A Sharp Practice you call it when reading an interesting article and find at its closo that you've read an advertisement. Don't condem the ad vertiser. You wont read the ordinary advertisement. All advertisers feel this in common with the writer who takes this means of telling you that Simmons Liver Regulator is the best meditinc for Malaria, impure blood, and a poisoned system. Equally as guod fur indigestion and Billiousncss. Dr. T. T. Ross Dr. T. T. Ross who has been attending a meeting of the North Carolina State Dental Society at Durham will return home tho latter part of this week and will resume the practice of his profession. Dr. Russia I'urius us that he has been having a pleas ant and profitable time. He was elected a member uf the Society, and no man in the State has a higher reputation than Dr. Russ fur first class work. A Deserved Promotion. Mr. Jno, II. Windct has been appointed general manager of the Seaboard Air Line. His father, Major John C. Winder, who has been both general manager and vice pres ident, retains ouly the latter position. The office of general superintendent is abolished. Mr. Winder, like his honored father, is a fine railroad man, and is quite well known here. He took the contract for excavating the canal of the Roanoke Navigation and Water Power Company here, and while the work was going on Mr. Winder spent considerable time at this place. We extend our congratulations both to him and to the road on this meri ted promotion. Meeting Closed. She Would Neither Paint nor Powder "I postively will not use cosmetics," said a lady to the writer yet my complexion is so bad that it occasions me constant mortification. What can I do to get rid of these dread ful blotches?" "Take Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription," was my promp reply. "Your complexion indicates that you are suffering from functional derange ments. Remove the cause of the blotches and your cheeks will soon wear the hue of health. The 'Favorite Prescription' is a wondetful remedy for all diseases peculiar to your sex. Its proprietors guarantee to return the money if it does not give satisfaction. But it never fails. Try it." The lady followed my advice, and now her complexion is as clear as a babe's and she enjoys better health then she has for many ycats. The judges, lawyers, doctors, farmers, drum men and newspaper men all make il headquarters. He gives all the delicacies in season and keeps a first class table. The Crop Season. The wave of warm weather and strong sunshine which has been passing over the country since Wednesday last has doubtless given an impulse to all growing crops from the Rocky Mountain plateaus to the Atlantic coast. So far, at least, as temperature is concerned, vegetation during this period has had suffiocut Btimilus. The mercury has goue up to seventy degree and even higher in most of the agricul tural sections. The rainfall tif the year, however, in many large areas has hoeu so fur deficient, or less than the usual amount recorded in the period from January to May. The pas-dug "warm wave" is associated with depression which has given rise to considerable showers in numerous disliL-t where more uioistun was needed. If the so callel periodical "cold spell of May appears" outime this year (it is usually lo ked for in tin second week of this mouili) tluru ma) be more general and mure copious raii.s Mass Meetino Pursuant to ad journment a meeting of the eitixeni of f)e ootjntY will be held, at Halifax, Mon day the lib iij of June, as j every !m voter in the county is most earnestly re quested to be piesent. Tho N. C Agricultural Experiment Station at Raleigh, desiring to extend the cultivation of Soy Beans, proposes to distribute a quantity of seed to careful planters desiting to test their merits. The only condition is that each applicaLt send 10 cents in postage stamps to pay cost of Irausportotion by mail. Enough seed will be sent to each applicant to plant 1 10 acre. The first 400 applications will be filled in the order received. Tho station regards this as a very val uable furage plant. It is upright, 2 to ?, feet high and is a legumino capa ble of adding niirogc-n frum the air to the soil in which it grows. It is planted in hills or drills 2 i to iij feet apart accord ing to richness of soil, and 15 to 24 iuuhes apart in the row. It can be plant ed any lime from March to July, either alone or in the corn row between the corn, and 2 to 4 beans are usually plant ed in each liill. Soil suitable to it and tho general preparation is the same as fur rn. When planted fur corn buth crops can be ensilaged together, and the corn ensilage will be much improved by the combination, or the plants when planted alone can be cut for forage before they got to i woudy. The seed are found in small pods apd can be saved by cutting the whole plant when leaves and pods ave turned a gulden hue. They can easily be beaten out when dry. If cut ting is delayed beyond this time the pods will be open and some will be lost on the ground. It will not pay to pick the beans. Il is alio a good table bean, but requires a lung titue to cook. The Sta tion urges a careful trial uf this ere p. Tired, Weak, Nervous, Means impure blood, and overwork or too much strain oo brain and body.
