Farmers Complain In talking ith Halifax county farmers at Court this week, we learn that farm work generally is very much behind. While Some have made good headway, others aye done very little, plowing. This is acoounted for mainly owing to certain tids being naturally dry aud easily worked suon after rains, while other ands become heavy on account of rains nd remain so, much longer than others. armers, however, are in good spirits and dtoit that they have plenty of , .j to break up land for this year's crons. aiming is now a profitable business and Halifax county farmers are in belter cir cumstances than they have been before n years. Memorial Kok Mr. McKinley. Postmaster John 0. Burton has received from the McKinley National Memorial Association a limited supply of the cer tificates which have been prepared fur distribution to contributors to tbe monu ment fund as souvenirs of their participa tion to that great enterprise. In the Supeiior court at Halifax Mon day two important cases on the civil docket were settled by compromiso with out going to trial, vit: Bishop vs. the S. A. L. Captain Mills Les ter, of the Norfolk and Southern Rail road, furmely with tbe Seaboard Air Line, had bis foot badly mashed Monday night, while attempting to cross the rail road track oo the' Seaboard Air Line by crawling under I freight train standing on tbe track. No one, of course, knew that Mr. Lester was under the train and in moving the ears his foot was caught under the wheels and was so badly mash ed that it will probably have to be amputated, A curious coincidence it that "Captain Lester was at Halifax Monday to testify in tbe oaso of Bishop vs the Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company, he having been the conductor in charge of tbe train at the lime Bishop wat hurt, and that bis loot should have been mashed just at Bishop's foot was mashed. There is ibis difference, however, Bishop was at work for the eompany it tbe time he wat hurt and was sent under tbe ears by tbe con ductor, while Lester wat hurt in trying to go under I train it bis own peril and of whioh tbe train men had no knowl edge and in which the railroad eompany can in no way be responsible.
