Tubre is a rumor that the general ffioea of the Atlantis Coast Lioe will be consolidated with those of the Louis villa and Nashville. People generally are beginning to realiie that road building is a public matter and that the best interests of American agriculture and the Americas people as a whole demand the construc tion of good roads, tod that money wisely expended for this purpose ia sure to return. Looking at tbem only from the "al mighty dollar" side, good roads are found to pay handsome dividends each year. Dr. Abbott, Dr Savaoe, and other popular ministers of New York who are deoying what have heretofore been con sidered Biblical truths, are creating more work for the missionary societies. If these reverend gentlemen continue their crusade agaloat the dootrinis of the in carnstion and other Christian beliefs they will soon be preaching to congrega tions of infidels and agooatics. It is strange, to say the least, that such eminent Christian mioisters should open ly declare their disbelief and retnaio so oalled teachers of the Christian religion One of Raleigh'i oldest citiims, Mr J. II. Alford, was sbot and killed ai his place of business, on Hargett street, by his business partner, Mr. Raymood D. Bynum, Thursday morning, io broad day light, in the heart of busy city and tha strangest part of the tragedy is that the slayer was allowed to walk away and escape. Mr. Alford was man of sterling character and integrity, and wa 70 years old. Bynum had been drinking Mr. Alford had said that there must be a chsnge in the business, offering to either buy or sell. Bynun walked into the office Thursday moroint tod without a word fired three shuts a Mr. Alford, io quick succession, two i f the shots taking effect. Bynum the left the office and escaped. Mr Alford was taken to a hospital where he died a few hours later. It appears that modern preachers, in cerlaio big city churches, continue to be sensational, and by their strsnge teach ings 'hey dtstroy the eimplo faith of our fathers. The following, from 'he New York American, is (tattling; The Rev. Mioot J Savage, in bis Christmas sermon yesterday, in the Church of the Messiah, at Park Avenue aod Tbirty-tourlh street, astonished the oongregalion that crowded the church by aooounciog views that upheld in many particulars the presentment made by the Rev, Dr. Lyman Abbott in bis address to the students of Harvard University He particularly emphasized Dr. Abbott's oontentioo that Gud is everywhere in and through snd of everything, as the Brooklyn divine said. But Mr Savage went stop further than Dr. Abbott. He declared (hat the idea of the vir gin birth, the incarnation were taken from Paganism. He said that every mother was a Madonna and every man possessed divine elements. In brief be contended that God put himself into every liviog creature and that each one contained as much of God as was possible for each to hold. He aided. ''For a good many hut.dred years, this 25i h day of December lias been set apart to cell brale the supposed fact that the Virgin's birth of the child, and the futthcr supposed fact that through the birth, God himself came into humanity came into the world This was not the original idea of this cclibration. Tbis is much older thao Chii-tianiiy and ia born out of interest and emotions that are human. "It was msny years after the birth ef Jesus before anybody thought of His being other than ordinary man born in the ordinary way the whole idea of the Virgin birth and the incarnation is Pagan in iia origin, and it was centuries before the church united upon any special day, even for celebration of the coming of Jesus into the world, "I propose this morning to turn away from the ordioary cooceptioo of Christmas -nd speak of something which I believe to be deeper, higher, wider aod more divine Every birth is a divine birth; ever; mother is a madonna If you think of it a moment you will notice that the deepest, hiiihtst, most universal fact in the universe is that of sex; aod as life evolves to iis higher forms and ex pressions this fact is emphasized more and more. "II, then, there is anything in lite that we bave a right Io suppose ex pressed the thought, the life, the feeling of God it must be tbis; it seems to me, therelore, I have said it before and I have been criticised io certain quarters for saying it, but I wish to tay it again and to ask you to think of it most seri ously to say that Virgin birth is holler thao that which God baa univers ally ordained seems to me to be re flection on every mother not only, but a reflection on God himself. "For eertainly that wbich he has made central and universal in all of us, from the lowed to the highest, cannot be im pure cannot be unholy, cannot be less icred than some supposed unnatural method by which bis own ordaioed laws are contravened and act aside. "And luppose God should take some other than His own wsy of coming into the world, if anybody did wish to oome after this fashion, is again to suppose that He would uot cuiua iii lu wy whieh He has Himself ordsined as uni- veraal? And this thought is further emphasised that He did Dot need to oome into the world 1.900 year ago, for Be waa here before then baa always been here. Tbis is Bis word It ia tha expression of Bit thoughts. Bit life, feeling. It is natural with the Divioe. Io Him we live aod nova and have our being, and all life io far a it goes ia the incarnation ef tha divine." GUARANTEED CUKE FOR PILES, ItchinR, Blind, Bleeding or Protruding Pile.
