Exum, one of the most prominent Methodists in the W'arrenton district, died at his home at Whitakers last Thursday. In the death of this splendid man the Methodist Church loses one of j its most faithful and prominent j workers and the community in ! which he lived has sustained an ; irreparable loss. Captain Exum was well known i here. He attended all the meet- ' ings of the District Stewards ever ; held here up to the one recently held, and at that lime he was pre vented from coming on account of illness. A faithful servant has been called to enter into an inheri tance that fadeth not away. A Great Prophet. Saturday was ground hog day. Up to 1 1 o'clock there was every indication that when the ground hog came out of his hole he would not make a shadow and would remain out, indicating that the back bone of : winter was broken. But about ; 1 1 :30 the clouds commenced to roll away and the sun came out in all of its spring time beauty just as the little weather prophet made its ! appearance, to see its shadow 1 loom up against the tall mercantile j buildings along Washington ave-! nue, and uuicker than a wink the little fellow returned to his habita-1 tion in the ground where he will , slumber for six more weeks. The weather Monday looked ! very much like the ground hog is 1 a great prophet. Miss Davis Transeerred. ; We note that Miss Lizzie R. Attor ! ney George C. (ircen, of VC'eldon, won a notable case in the Federal court at Raleigh, last week. The suit was for the face value : of a policy carried by the late John ! G. Fllis, of Garysburg, on his i life. On the 1 4th of February, 1 I901,occured the death of the ! insured. The premium on his insurance was due and he had ! mailed the money to the office but , 12 hours before his death, and while yet in good health, his death occurring almost suddenly. The remittance reached the company 12 hours after the death occurred. : This was the finding of the jury, but the company contended that the premium w as not mailed them until after the death of the in sured. The wife of the insured had died and none of his five chil j dren was of age. There being no estate, no guardian was ap- pointed and no administrator to the affairs of the deceased. No nionev has been due The case was ably conducted by Mr. George C. Green for the plaintiffs and the defendants also had able counsel.
