C, Toepleman, general manager of the Home Telephone and Telegraph Company, called in to see us last Thursday. Bro. Flilliard, of the Scotland Neck Commonwealth, has our thanks for the kind words so nice ly spoken of us last week. Mrs. A. F. Harrison and Miss Lucy Harrison, of Fnfield, came to Weldon Saturday to visit Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Harrison. Miss Hassie Willis, of Orange county, Va., who has been the guest of Rev. and Mrs. H. A. Willis, left Thursday for Rich mond. Next Monday will be the first day of June and, of course, being the first Monday in the month the county commissioners will hold their regular meeting. Mr. Henry W. Sixty-eight counties heard from give 4 1,79.1 majority for prohibi- lion, and seventeen counties heard . from give total anti-prohibiiion ma jorities of (i,(i25, making the dry ; majority from 85 counties heard from .Vs, MiK, leaving I.? counties: to be heard from. Of these, two will give a total majority ' against prohibition of (IK), and eleven will give a total majority for ! prohibition ol 5,500, a net estima- ted majority in the counties to be ; heard from of 4,900, making a ; total estimated majority for the Slate of 4.1, ('UN in favor of prohibi tion, and the figures may run up to 50,000. ! I lalifax was true to her traditions i as one of the best counties in North Carolina, and her majority will be close to 500. Weldon is the banner precinct, and only 9 votes were cast against prohibition. The official vole is 22S for prohibition to 9 against. Other precincts in Halifax county heard from were as follows : Halifax ( I for prohibition, 29 w e I . Roanoke Rapids 154 for prohibition 9M against. Fnlield gives 112 majority for prohibition, Scotland Neck 49, ; Littleton 1 13 dry 53 wet. j Precincts in Northampton heard from indicate a majority for prohi bition of S00. In the year I Ml the question' of Slate prohibition was voted on by the people or North Carolina and the result was4S,0til lor pro hibition to 164,144 against prohi bition. In that year the vote in Halifax county was 4H4 for prohibition to 5,073 against prohibition. F AKi.v Closing. Mr. Bland took $2000 stock unconditionally. On motion of A, F. Wilson, the committee was instructed to consult with architects with reference to plans for the hotel. The Secretary was authorized to expend a sum not exceeding $5 for advertising for manager of hotel. W. T. Shaw reported that the Chairman of the Health and Sanitation Committee had authorized A. C. House to act for him in his absence at Board meetings. The following resolu tion, by R. 11. Latham, was unan imously passed: "That a special committee on Public Nuisances, consisting of three members, be appointed by the President, whose duly it shall be to report to the proper authorities, whether mem bers of this Chamber or not, any condition of affairs all'ecting the best interests of our town and com munity; the acts of said committee to be at all times subject to review by the Clumber." The President appointed the following on this committee: A. C. I louse, B. A. Pope, and W. T. Parker. The Secretary was ordered paid $10 per month for his services from ' Feb. 7, 1 90S. Immediately after ihe noinina i tion and speech of acceptance, Mr. j Plato Collins, of KiuMoii, imro ' duced the follow ing resolutions, which were unanimously adopted: "Whereas, the Democratic party stands today as the advocate and been made in the education and awakening of the conscience of the American people to extravagance, corruption in public life, and to the necessity for reform in our eco nomic system, and to the justice, wisdom and sanity of Democratic policies and principles, now, there - fore, be il resolved: "That W. J. Bryan typifies and embodies those ideals and princi ples which today animate the minds and hearts of the American people : and is, therefore, the logical candi date of the Democratic party for President of the United States. "2nd. That this congressional i convention for the Second District, in meeting assembled, hereby in structs ihe delegates elected to the Democratic National Convention ; to be held at Denver on the 7th , day of Julv, 1908, to vote for William Jennings Bryan as the nominee of the Democratic party for President of the I'niied States and that they do all in their power to secure his nomination. "3rd. That it is the sense of this convention ih. n no one should be elected a delegate to the said Na tional convention who is not in perfect accord and sympathy with these resolutions and that the del egates elected to the Stale Conven tion should 1 c instructed to vote ' i for William Jennings Bryan for President, first, last and all the ; time." The convention decided to elect four delegates to the National con vention and to elect no alternates. The election of delegates resulted in the choice of Plato Collins, J. ; O. W. Gravely, T. M. Washing ton and F. L. Travis. Mr. N. J. , Rouse, of Kinston, was unaimous- ' ly nominated for Presidential elec tor.
