The birthday of the King of i Kings will be celebrated on Friday ' and on every hand salutations nf i merry Christmas will be heard. i This is a holiday w orld-wide in observance, and immortal in its significance. It touches every heart with a note of exhilaration as no other festival can and envel ops the whole wide-world with a halo and a glory all its own, set few of us pause to think of a time when Christmas did not exist. It is interesting to notice how poetry and painting, fable and fic tion have united with the verities ' of the sacred historians to give pathos and dignity and delight to the blessed occasion, which we now celebrate, and vie with each other in declaring that "peace on earth, good-will to men," with "glory to God in the highest," are not figments of the imagination, but a condition necessary for and conducive to our noblest life. It is, and should be, a royal feast day, and while we should observe it with all the solemnities due tins august festival, we should enter heart and soul into the joyous shouts of the children, as, laden with gifts from Santa Clans, they proceed to make merry with their shouts of childish glee. For we learn how the glad ho sannas of the heavenly host, heard by shepherds on the plains of Judea, were succeeded in after days by those of the children echo ing their song even in the Holy Temple of the Lord, and how He to whom they were ascribed took little children in His arms and blessed them. Lei us all with one heart and one mind enter fully into the enjoy ments of the present Christmas season, for there can be but one Lord's birthday, but one Merry Christmas. THE multiplicity of scandalous divorces in high life will not make altogether for an evil effect, if they but bring home more thoroughly that! statistics do this ugly side of our social fabric. And facing this situation with the great militant body of churchmen ready to take up such a question, they cannot be too insistent by precept regulation and example to bring about that moderation of AmTiean life that makes possible the contented fam ily with parents and children in unity and accord under one roof, elements of usefulness and good in the community. The early shopper was pretty busy, but not anywhere near as busy as the late shopper is going to be. It looks as if the rush for Sena tor Knox's shoes will be big enough 10 crowd the holiday shopping rush some. Mr. Martin W. Littleton offers to be the Moses of the "New De mocracy." A number of house keepers accepted the offer and found, alas, that they were re quired to pay We. express on three pieces of w are easily sold anywhere for 30c. This inspired a citien of Vi'eldon to get off the following jingle: Some time ago there was a man NX'ho came to our tow n He went around from house to house 1 'p the street and down. I le was a regular talking machine He seemed to be very w ise 1 le didn't want to sell a thing Only w anted to advertise. A new kind of kitchen ware That folks are using now For you to cook and live w ithout it This fellow couldn't sec how. He said it was as fine as silk It had the wear and weight And all it cost to get a set Was for you to pay the freight. He said to live without this ware Was nothing less than sin; 'Twas better than granite or iron or steel And easier kept than tin. The Pure Food Law had sent him out To let the people know That this old wear you have al ways used Would certainly kill you, sure. So all of the ladies bought a set They said it was no fake, They knew it must be healthy And then it wouldn't break. Its only been a week or two j Since this fellow came and went; Hut w e'd get a hound and track him down If we thought he'd smell his ' scent. Now to have your money spent j this way I Docs seem to me quite hard For the set of ware that my wife bought : Is lying in our back yard. j If I were a fakir on the road ; And tunes were getting tight, I'd take the tram lor Weldon For there the suckers bite.
