Mr. Wallace Carroll on Monday lost by death a very fine horse. The horse was stricken with pneu monia, and no relief could be given. Rev. W. S. Rone, presiding elder of the Warrenton District, visited our town Sunday, preaching two very eloquent sermons, which were quite a spiritual uplift for those fortunate enough to hear him. Rev. Mr. Rone is a very fluent preacher, speaking in easy well modulated tones, couching his words in sentences sparkling with rare beauty and richness. He has the faculty of deeply impress ing from the very beginning, his hearers, and as a result there is that corresponding harmony be tween preacher and people that culminates in the giving and re ceiving of helpful and valuable les- (!"': so much needed bv thosf who would aspire to the higher, grander, more satisfactory life. Brother Rone's visits are always anticipated with much pleasure and 'lis a real delight to come in con tact with such a life as his. The first quarterly conference was held on Monday morning at the resi dence of Mrs. Brown, and the re ports from the preacher, the stew ards, anS. S. superintendents of the charge, prove that the work was in fairly good condition, and much is expected this year. By pastor and people blending their united energies to this end much good can result. W. F. C. Miss Morrison, of Baltimore' head trimmer and designer for Mrs. P. A. Lewis this season, has arrived. Miss Morrison comes highly recommended as being an artist in the line of trimming and designing, and Mrs. Lewis is to be congratulated on having Miss Mor rison with her this season. DWELLING DESTROYED. Mr. ii ml Mrs. Carroll Barely Es cape with Their Lives Negro Hoy Hurried Up. Saturday night the Whitehead place, owned by Mr. W. B. Drewry, four miles south of Wel don was destroyed by lire. The dwelling was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Will Carroll, and they came near losing their lives in the fire. When aroused by the smoke and deadly crackling of the fire the bed they occupied was burning. It was a moment of terror and no time to even think. Mrs. Carroll hastily caught up her little baby, four weeks old, and followed i by her husband they escaped in i their night robes from the burning I building. A negro boy who work- j ed about the house and stables for Mr. Carroll was burned up, only j the charred remains of his heart! being found in the ashes Sunday morning. Mr. Carroll is a nephew of Mr. Drewry, and as soon as possible Mr. Drewry was on the scene with clothing and aid for the suffering, who were speedily taken to his ! home. The dwelling was one of the handsomest country places in the j county and was valued at $3,000. i Mr. Drewry had $1,500 insurance ; on building placed in the Virginia ! Fire and Marine Insurance Coin-1 pany. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll lost every-, thing they possessed including j furniture, clothing and family stores. Mrs. Carroll even had her hair scorched so near was the fire to her head when she was aroused. It was an awful experi ence they say, and Mrs. Carroll has been prostrated since the fire. Mr. Drewry, with that kind and sympathetic nature, and big heart, always ready to respond to the cry of distress, has done all in his power to contribute to their comfort and reconcile them to their loss. They saved their precious baby, and their own lives have been spared, as if by a miracle, while a human being had the life crushed out in the flames, and this is some- thing to be thankful for. The reason a man is afraid of not going to heaven is it's such fun going to the other place till you get there. i WE BAKE A BIG VARIETY ol' I'.iviiil. Kails, Caki'H iiiiil 1'astripn.
