These pa pers were submitted to State Su perintendent Joyiur who decided in favor of Miss Katherine Ward's essay as the best in the State on "Waterways, " and she was award ed the prize of $10 in gold. This is a well earned honor and Miss Ward is to be congratulated on her success in winning the prize where there were so many competitors in the contest. It is also remarkable that in a l.u ge county like I lalifax that the two best essays should have been prepared by pupils of the Weldoii High School. I)i:.itl of Mk. TmioK.-Mr. John Henry Tudor, who has been making his home at Rosemary for sometime, died at the home of his mother at Stoney Creek, Va., Friday evening, July Nth, after an illness of about four weeks. The death of this excellent young man was sad, indeed. On April rith he was happily married to Miss Myrtle Fulghani, at the home of 'the bride, near town, and ere the honeymoon had fairly waned his devoted young wile was a widow. Mr. Tudor was taken with ly- j phoid fever and about three weeks . ago he was removed to his former . home at Stony Creek. The fever , developed into typhoid pneumonia. On Friday last the parents ol the young bride, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Fulghani, left here for his bed side and only reached Stony Creek in time to see him pass quietly into the spirit land. Mr. Tudor was a most excellent young man and his untimely death causes sorrow in many hearts. F'or ins bereaved young wile die ten derest sympathy is felt. May the Lord hind up her crushed ami bruised heart and give herstrength tn bear on muter this heavv aiHie- beautitui tiorat orterings and a large crowd of sorrowing friends to offer lender words of sympathy for the bereaved family in their affliction. Di:.ath oi- Major Wilson. Major James V. Wilson, who died recently at the home of his daugh ter, Mrs. Joel Jenkins Hutchison, in Charlotte, was for some years a resident ol this town, and was the father of our honored townsman, Mr. A. I:. Wilson. Major Wilson was horn in Gran ville, county, December 17, 1 S32. He served vaii jnily in theConfed-1 erateariny, first as Captain in the Sixth N. C. Regiment, and later as assistant quartermaster in Ram seur's brigade. At the close of the war Major Wilson returned to the service of the Western North Carolina railroad, and was later made president of the road. He was chairman of the first Corpora-1 lion commission, and was always true and devoted to the best inter ests of the people of his State. His greatest feat was in engineering the western N. C. Railroad over j and through ihe mountains at Round Knob. In one view of the road the track is plainly visible six times, as it w inds around the spur up the steep slopes ami then across the mountains to Asheville, and all this was due to the engineering skill of one man Major Wilson, whose death is lamented over the entire State. He lived here for quite a number of vers and was president of the Roanoke Naviga tion and Water Power Company, and was largely interested in the cotton seed oil mill, destroyed some years ago by fire. .Major Wilson was honored and esteemed by the people of Weldon, and to his bereaved children and grandchildren we extend heartfelt sympathy. k'l NAW AY GlHLS. Misses Hil ina l.aminie, Mary C. Smith and Gertrude Pierce, three pretty Portsmouth girls, were taken in charge by Chief Dickens here Monday evening.
