The la dies of Weldon are preparing for active work on beautifying the park and they will be glad of any assistance that may be given them. With the near approach of spring they feel that it is now time to be gin active work on beautifying the park on Washington avenue, and also the triangular square near the union station. They hope by the time summer arrives to have these squares looking most attrative and inviting. Signs of Spring. There are many signs of an unusually early spring, chief among them being that Easter will come this year March 23, the earliest date it has fallen in over fifty years. Then peach, plum and other small fruits trees are in full bloom; fig trees are budding, rose bushes putting on new leaves, a new mantle of green covers lawns, and frogs are croaking in the ponds. Not in the memory of the oldest inhabitants have anv of the trees bloomed so early in winter, nor have they seen such a mild winter. Id THE Prm.li:. The space given by leading periodicals to discussions of temperance ques tions is gratifying in the extreme to Chrisraa temperance workers, and is an unerring indication ol the place the drink traffic occupies in the minds of the reading public. Many magazines, weekly and daily papers are allowing space for the latest findings of science concern ing the effects of alcohol. Science deals with moderate drinking and muscular work. Alcohol has two distinct effects on an empty stom ach, a strengthening and a weak ening one. The Book Club. Mrs. T. C. Harrison was hostess Tuesday af ternoon for the third anniversary of the Book Club. Vt nh Italian art as the subject, ihe program was one of the most delightful of the year, ihe members responding to roll call with some fact about an Italian artist or sculp tor. A paper on "Italian Art and Ar tists" by Mrs. J. D. Everett re flected great familiarity with the subject, and proved exceedingly interesting, while Mrs. H. B. Har rell's splendid talk on "Italian Ma donnas" was thoroughly enjoyed. Mrs. W. M. Cohen, in her usual easy style, read Kipling's L' Envoy and Miss Annie Musgrove gave a beautiful piano selection by Ruben stien. The decorations were very at tractive, and unusually appropriate favors for the afternoon were love ly copies of the masterpieces. After serving dainty (refresh ments a most happy feature of the anniversary was the "Club Birth day Cake" bearing its three tapers, and in cutting, it was found that Miss Musgrove had secured the ring, Miss Clark the coin, Mrs. Ward the thimble, while the "good luck" was shared between Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Harrison. With Ihe club members, Mrs. Harrison's guesis were Mrs. R. S. Travis, Mrs W. T. Shaw, Mrs. J. T. Good) and Miss Hill. A PROGRESSIVE IDEA. Charlotte Semi-Weekly Observer Tries New Idea Which Proves a Big Success. New ideas in newspaper work are rare and any idea ill, it proves a big success from the first trial is worthy of notice. The Charlotte Semi-Weekly Observer recently made an offer to the fanners by which any farmer could run any kind of a 20-word advertisement free of all charges for three issues. On the date on which this an nouncement was made the paper had only two classified advertise ments in the "Farmer's Column." Within four weeks the paper is carrying two full columns of ad vertising under this heading and many of them are now paid adver tisements. After the parcels post went into effect a "Parcel Post Column" was opened up for the merchants and they are allowed a 20-word advertisement 3 times free of charge, with the result that the merchants have been attracted to The Semi-Weekly Observer and they are now using not only the classified but big space. The effect of the free advertise ments to the farmers has been to stimulate them and every mail now brings new subscribers and the old ones are paying up gladly be cause they appreciate a good thing. The Semi -Weekly Observer gives the farmer all the best news of the Charlotte Daily Observer and it is the aim ol the Observer Company to make it the greatest semi-weekly newspaper in the Piedmont sec tion of the country.
