In the United States the yearly waste of infant life is seen in about three hundred thousand (300,000) deaths in the first year. Most of this mortality is due to cruel igno rance. Mrs. E. Pankhukst, militant suffragette leader of London, has taken no food since she was re-arrested and taken to Holloway jail. She is said to be in a very weak state, owing to reduced vitality consequent on her previous "nun-1 ger strikes." The advocates of votes for wo men gave two plays recently in Washington, entitled, "Some years Hence," and "Woman." These were supposed to repre sent the conditions that would ob tain in the year 2013, if women are given the right to vote. The papers state that President Wilson is getting tired of being surrounded by secret sen ice men who guard him every hour. It must be exasperating to a liberty loving American citizen, such as the President is, to have men watching him all the time. A great deal is being said in the newspapers about the election of a woman as State Senator in Colo rado. As far back as 1S97 there we e several women mem bers of the Utah Legislature. One j of them was the author of a bill requiring women to remove their hats in a theater. "Henry M. L'laglek will be put down as one the country's 'captain's of industry, '" says the Augusta Chronicle. Klagler may have been all that and yet he was not a great man. We don't believe it possible for any man who would treat a woman as Flagler treated his afflicted wife to rise to true greatness, 'says the Greensboro News. No ONE demands a navy tor warfare upon others but this coun try demands an adequate navy for its defense, and its defense de mands a navy of constantly in creasing proportions. The plank in the Democratic platform adopt ed at Baltimore says: "The party that proclaimed and has always enforced the Monroe Doctrine, and was sponsor for the new navy, win continue taiiniuny m nh.'flfi' fl rv,iictMilif, nnl r quirements 10 provide and main tain an adequate and well-proportioned navy sufficient 10 defend American policies, protect our citi zens and uphold the honor and dig nity of the nation." $100 REWARD, $100 The readers of this paper will lie pleased to learn that there is at least one drtmdcd disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. 1 1 all a Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known t) the medical fraternity. Catarrh beinft a constitutional disease, requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Ca tarrh Cure is taken internally, actini; directly upon the blood and mucous urfaces of the system, thereby destroy the foundation of the disease, and giv ing the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing it work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case it fads to cure. F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, Ohio. Testimonials sent free. Weldon Lumber Company Destroyed by Lire Heroic Work Saved the Kilns and Lumber Sheds- l oss about $25. COO, Partially Covered by Insurance. The big lumber niiil of the Wel don l umber Company, in South Weldon, was totally destroyed by fire Sunday, together with all ma chinery, engines and seven large boilers, tw o water tanks, etc. Fire was discovered in the main building ;ii about twelve o'clock and the congregations in the church :s were just about being turned out when the alarm was given. The null made a great blae iiul soon hundreds of people had ru-dicd to the scene of the fire. The in .mi building burned rapidly and fiie vioii communicated to the oil h uise and that was also totally destroyed. The big water tank , on t ie ground soon collapsed and we-ni over with a tremendous I crash. The 20,000 gallon elevated j tan' on a sieel frame burned slov- i ly, owing to so much iron and ' 1 steel about the staves, and it was ah nit the last thing to collapse. Men and boys w in ked heroically to saw the kilns and lumber piled near the fire and succeeded ad mirably. A splendid new locomo tive and tender standing on the siding near the mill was badly dam aged. J, L. Shepherd, general mana ger of the company, is one of the best know n lumber men in Eastern Carolina, and this mill had been in successful operation since 1902. G, L. Vincent, of Emporia, vice president, and one of the largest lumber manufacturers in that sec tion of Virginia, arrived here on his automobile soon after the tire. The mill was insured in the l.unibennens' Mutual Fire Insur ance Companies and the insurance carried partially covers the loss, which is estimated to be $25,000. A CARD. The thanks of the writer and his deep appreciation are gratefully tendered to the people of the com munity for their faithful work at the fire that destroyed the mill of the Weldon Lumber Company last Sunday. I o every one wno Helped to i control the fire and to save our company from additional loss, we feel our debt. If timely help had i not been so promptly given, the i entire plant and the property of j others would doubtless have been j destroyed. The writer would esteem it a privilege to make known his obli- gaiion to each one personally. Since this is not possible, he lakes tins opportunity to express his 1 gratitude to every one who helped and who sympathize. J. L. Shlthlrd, President. Till- TEMPERANCE SUNTIMKNT Is Progressing. The Boy Scouts endorse Secretary Bryan's total abstinence principles by pre- senting to the Secretary a copy of the following resolutions, "Hav ing just celebrated Mothers' Day if is fitting and proper that we should enlist under our Mother's banner in the war against the de mon ol strong drink; therefore be it Resolved, That we, Troop 16 of the Ingram Memorial Congre gational Church of Washington, D. C. do hereby endorse the ac tion of our Secretary of State in his broad stand against King Alco hol and his hosts. " Lillian Russell, the actress, de clared in a speech at a Philadelphia theaue a tew days ago, that Alco hol is death to Beauty of Mind, body and soul. People applaud that sentiment because they know its true for there few people who have not suffered in some way from alcohol excesses. I have seen the rum urougnton Dy drink. If I dared I'd like to go on the stage and talk nothing else. The world is getting better because its using less alcohol. A few years ,e nad 0 dri()k I ' 1 but now there are countless thousands thai dare not drink." So we see the greatesi man in America, Mr. Bryan, the greatest actress in America, Miss Russell, greatest ni.iuaincs and all clean newspapers are helping to dethrone the demon of intemperance that withering blight to our churches and civilization that has made us a nation of drunkards.
