And everybody will be wanting to know how that South Carolina anti-tippina law gets along. Greenville with a $30,000 bond issue for school purposes is moving along on the right road. The increasing number of trav eling libraries now being put to use in North Carolina is a good sign. The only way to put an end to "blind-tigering" is to try the effect of road sentences. And for a sec ond offense increase the term. THE rapid rate at which money is being spent in the war in Europe is shown in the statement that it is costing England $15,000,000 a day. One of the loveliest weddings ever before witnessed in Weldon took place Wednesday evening, June kith, at 8 o'clock at the Co lonii.il home of Mrs. Lee Johnson, where here daughter, Miss Eleanor Johnson, became the bride of Mr. Cuius William Howard, Jr. The ceremony, which was performed hy Rev C. W. Howard, of Kins ton, father of the groom, was wit nessed by relatives and a limited number of friends. The decorations were unusually artistic in green and white, consist ing of palms, ferns. Southern smilav, and white cut flowers. The bride, ho was given in ft. mi. marriage by her uncle, Dr. Ster ! ling BLicku ell Pierce, was a pic """" " I ture of girlish beauty in her wed ding gow n of w hue crepe de chine trimmed with rare lace. The bridal veil was arranged coronet fashion and held in place with a wreath of orange blossoms. I ler only orna ment was a handsome pearl neck lace, which was a gift of the groom. Miss Willie Blackwell Musgrove, cousin of the bride, who was maid of honor, wore an attractive gown of white net over white taffeta. Her short tulle veil was caught with small rosebuds and she car ried an armful of bride's roses tied with white tulle. The bride's maids were Misses Louise Beason, of Lexington; Mae Wilson, of Roxboro; Gladys Wallace, of Elm City; Louise Hor ton, of North Wilkesboro; Mary Nicholson, of Littleton, Marion Clayton and Louise Thome, of Littleton, all Sorority mates of the bride. Their dainty frocks were of white net with lavender ribbons, the Sorority colors, and each wore short tulle veils and carried wreaths of roses, tied with lavender tulle. The bride carried a handsome shower bouquet of lilies of the valley and maiden hair ferns. The ushers were Mr. Pierce Johnson, brother of the bride, and Mr. Howard Bounds. Mr. Paul Howard, of Kinston, served as his brother's best man. Little Miss Katherine Pierce, cousin of the bride, bore the ring in a shower of Easter lilies. Immediately before the ceremo ny a musical program was render ed by Mrs. W. S. O B. Robinson, of Goldsboro, and Miss L u I a Thorne, of Littleton. Mrs. Wil liam Alexander Pierce was accom panist and rendered the wedding music, giving soft selections during the ceremony. The bridal register was in charge of Misses Lillie Gay Shaw and Bessie Carrington Owen. Mrs. J. W. Pierce received the 2uests at the library door and conducted them to the register. Delightful and refreshing fruit punch was served by Misses Kath erine Ward and Jeannette Mus grove and W. T. Shaw, Jr., and B. M. Ttittle. The bride, the only daughter of Mrs. jonnson, is a young woman of unusual charm and culture, es pecially talented in piano and voice, being a music graduate of Peace Institute. The large collection of costly and handsome gifts coming from various sections attest in a measure the love and esteem in which she is held by her friends. The groom, a former resident of Kinston, has made Weldon his home for the past several years, and is one of the most successful and prominent of the younger bus- mess men. At the conclusion of the recep tion Mr. and Mrs. Howard left for an extended bridal trip north. He was in his eightieth year, having celebrated his seventy-ninth birthday the KSth of January, receivine at that time hundreds of congratulatory mes sages from the people of the State who loved him better perhaps than any man within its borders. Weak ness of body incident to a heavi ness of years brought death. When Vance was nominated Governor he was chosen as Lieu-tenant-Governor.succeeding Vance to the Governorship upon the Li ter's election to the Senate. He was re-elected for a full term in ISS0. (Jets Commutation to Life Im prisonment Goernor Slaton (Jives (lut Lengthy Statement Declaring That Spirit of Judj;e Roan Calls Back from I nk now n To Save Prisoner from Death Goernor John M. S!uton, of Georgia, Monday, commuted the death sentence of iLeo M. Frank to life imprisonment. The announcement was followed by mob violence and the militia of the Slate was called out to protect the Governor's home. Stones, brick, and bottles were thrown at the soldiers and Lieutenant Arnold Parker was struck and rendered unconscious for a short time. At Marietta, the former home of Mary Phagan, the Governor was burned in effigy. A life sized dummy strung up to a telegraph pole at Marietta, bore an inscrip tion "John M. Slaton, Georgia's traitor Governor." Governor Slaton in a lengthy statement giving his reasons for commutation said: "In any event the performance of my duty under the constitution is a matter of con science. The responsibility rests where the power is reposed. Judge Roan, with that awful sense of re sponsibility which probably came over him as he thought of that Judge before whom he would shortly appear, calls to me from another world to request that I do that which he should have done. I can endure misconstruction, abuse and condemnation, but I cannot stand the constant compan ionship of an accusing conscience which would remind me in every thought that I, as Governor of Georgia, failed to do what I thought to be right. There is a territory 'beyond a reasonable doubt and absolute cer tainty' for which the law provides in allowing life imprisoment instead of execution. This case has been marked by doubt. Two judges of the State Supreme court doubted. Two judges of the United States Supreme court doubted. One of the three prison commissioners doubted. "In my judgment, by granting a commutation in this case, I am sustaining the jury, the judge and the appellate tribunals, and at the same time am discharging that duty which is placed on me by the State constitution." The Governor then appended the order commuting Frank's sen tence from death to imprisonment for life. SPEAK INTO THE TRANSMITTER And Ask the Party You Are Talk ing- To To Do the Same. Many of itie complaints made by subscribers that tlieir telephones do not talk up and ihai ilieycannoi hear or be heard, are frequently due to die improper method of the subscribers in talking into the tel ephone. Some subscribers talk "at it," some "away from it," and some "as though the telephone did not exist." The proper way to use a telephone is to talk di rectly INTO THE TRANSMITTER. Telephone engineers have made elaborate tests to show the effect on transmission expressed in miles of No. 10 B. & S. copper circuit from varying distance of lips from the transmitter. They are the au thority for ihe following figures: l.ia Los-, Trauimi.sion 1'f.ian; K.iuiviilenl tu 1 inch, 57 miles 2 inches, 128 miles 3 inches, 178 miles 4 inches, 218 miles It is true that the telephone has been in common use for a great many years and yet it is also a fact that a large per centage of tele phone users do not speak into the transmitter. To do this has a two fold advantage; it enables the per son at tne otner enu ol tne circuit TO HEAR perfectly, and keeps, in part, at least, the "stand-er-by" irom neanng wnat you have to say. The next time you talk local or Long Distance speak into the transmitter and ask the pany you are talking to to do the same, and note the wondrous change, and what a pleasure it is to "Gift the Miles with Speech. The burning in effigy of Gover nor John M.
