4- V : i ii 'l WHAT CATARRH IS ; It has been said tli.it every thiid : person has catarrh in some form. ' Science has shown that nasal catan h often indicates a general weakness of the body; and local treatments in the form of snuffs and vapors do little, if any good. To correct catarrh you should treat its cause by enriching your blood with the oil-food in Scott's Emulsion which 19 a medicinal food and a building-tonic, free irotualcohol or any harm fill dms. What a long time the world has been going along since our forefathers predicted that it was going to the dogs. School boys may feel inclined to request a postponement of studies in geography until the re arrangement of the maps is com pleted. "School inspetion is the best means of bringing health work di rectly to the people, for through the child the parent is reached, which is to say that through the school the community is reached What is done for the child in school is practically done for the whole family, and what is institu ted in the school is soon adopted by the town or neighborhood." Moi'NT Airy, Raeford and Ay den are the next towns to make municipal improvements. Mount Airy is to have sewer system, Rae ford is to have sewers and water, while Ayden is to have sewers, water and lights. Whether cotton goes to twelve cents or not, these towns, follow ing the good example of Weidon, realize that protection is necessary for the health of their people, and that this is a matter not to be de ferred or altered by the price of cotton or the cost of war. Soap, water, sunlight and fresh air are far more favorable in pre venting the spread of infectious diseases than is disinfection by fu migation. This was the opinion expressed recently at the meeting of the American Public Health As sociation at Rochester, N. Y., by most of the health experts who took part in the discussion of the control of infectious diseases. It was declared that thorough cleaning with soap and water.fresh air and sunlight, and particularly renovation repainting, and re papenng wherever needed were more elHcient methods of disinfec tion than is fumigation. FIRE AT CIIOCKAYOTTE ja ii M- a i i --.-y .em ii M . .j ' -' Paper Product Company's Plant Destroyed by Fire Sunduy morning Building was Owned by (iarrett & Company, ot Norfolk. HEAVY LOSS, WITH INSL KANCI-:. SMALL Fire Sunday morning destroyed the entire plant of the Paper Prod uct Company, at Chockayotte, and the building is a complete u reck. l-'ire was discovered in the build ing Sunday morning, at 3 o'clock, and being located one mile west ol Weidon the fire had made such headway before the arrival of the tire fighters that nothing could be saved. The building was owned by Garrett K Co., of Norfolk, Va , and was erected about 20 years ago, and was occupied by Garrett & Co. for about ten years as a winery. Some years ago (iarrett & Co. moved their plant to Nor folk, Va. About three or lour years ago H. A. tidwards moved here from Roanoke Rapids, leased the building and operated u as a paper product company, making paper cones, spools, etc., tor cot ton mills, and at the time of the tire was doing a hue business and had orders ahead to keep the mill run ning night and day. H. V. Bounds and 0. L. Smith were associated with Mr. lidward in the enterprise. The loss falls quite heavily upon the members of the company. The total insurance carried on machin ery and stock w as about $6,000. We learn that Mr. Garrett had no insurance on the building. G. H. Kennedy had all of his household furniture stored in the building and lost everything. He had $300 insurance on the furni ture. Mr. lidwards says he cannot properly estimate his loss at this lime, but that the insurance was not over 40 cents on the dollar. Much sympathy is felt for (he members of the firm in their loss. It is impossible for them to s.iy yet what will be done as to re building. I-'ike Prevention Day. -Saturday, October Vhh, is to be observed as fire prevention day in North Carolina. Fully two-thirds of the three million dollar loss in this S:.re is preventable according to Insurance Commissioner James R. (,ur.g. i who has just issued a statement relative to the observance of Fire Prevention Day mi October iMh The statement ot Mr Young is ac companied by the p r o c I a -. mation o t Governor Locke Craig selling aside this day, ac cording to legislative enactment, for the study of means of prevent ing fires and the reduction of the fire waste. It is also accompanied by a letter from I). J. Y. Joyner, superintendent of public instruc tion, directed to the superinten dents and teachers of the public schools of the State Am !.! used Letters. The fol low mg is a list ol letters remaining 'uncalled fur" in the Weidon post office: Peiiuie Andenon, Willie Flor ence h'ppes, M. W. Falkins, Lou sia Flait, Rev. C. W. Ivey, Katie Jones, J. A. M., X'eldon. N. C. Littleton Far.mf.r Shot. J V. Smith, a prominent farmer, was shot to death at his home near Littleton, Saturday, by William Alston a negro employed on the place. Alston has been arrested and placed in Halifax county jail. He confesses to the shooting, but says he shot in self defense after Mr. Smith had struck him with a hoe. The Deadly Flobert Rifle. William Herring, aged 7, while playing with a flobert rifle, at Scot land Neck, accidentally shot his two-year-old baby brother, Robert Herring, in the face, the ball enter ing the side of the face just below the eye. The wounded child was taken to Rocky Mount where the X Ray was used to locate the ball. The flobert rifle in the hands of children is a dangerous thing and parents everywhere should see to it that no such weapons are placed in the hands of their children. Bring on Vui k Corro.Y At a meeting of the business men and others interested in the advance ment of Weidon Monday night ar rangements w ere made to pay the farmers Roanoke Rapids prices for their cotton. George C.Green presided at the meeting and W. T. Whitehead and W. A. Pierce brief ly stated the object ol the call. A committee of three, composed of W. A. Pierce, R. S. Travis and J. I. Wyche, was appointed to se cure a cotton buyer and see that the farmers were paid full Roanoke Rapids prices for their cotton. I his is not intended in any way to divert the trade of Roanoke Rap ids to Weidon or to overbid that town on cotton. It is simply a plan to pay the same, putting Wei don on equal footing with that town, and to indue farmers living in this section to bring their cotton to Weidon. There is cotton enough for all and this town simply wants its share of the trade. So, Mr. Fanner, you can use your judgment about coming to Weidon or going to Roanoke R in ids, as the price will be the same no more, no less. While this is only a temporary solution of the matter, the real so lution, as stated by Chairman Green, is For the business men and other moneyed men to get to gether and build a cotton mill using from 4,000 to 5,000 bales annual ly and then the matter will be per manently settled as to paying the same for cotton that any other place can pay.
