Stainback, Sec'y. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. The trees are pudding out early. It is almost time to gather at the river. No more porkless days for a while. Some of the peach trees are in full bloom. The park begins to look green and inviting. Many a sickly fly has spoiled a heaiihy appetite. Plant your Irish potatoes this during this month. The temperature went down to 2 last Sunday night. Break your Cold or l.alirippc with a few doses (ibti. The road to success is paved with good advertising. Mrs. V. K. Overman is visiting relatives in Goldsboro. Mrs. Philip Moore left Tuesday morning for New York City. The race is not always to the swift and it is never to the loafer. Mrs. C. T. Cordon has returned from a trip to Georgia and Florida. Mr. Percy Dawson, of Ports mouth, Va., spent Sunday in town. Women always think they mean what they say at the time they say it. Many a thief goes to prison be cause of his lawyer's shortcom ings. Mr. Bernard Holdford spent Sunday and Monday in Peters burg. Mr. and Mrs. John Harris, of Emporia, spent Sunday here with relatives. RUB-MY-TISM-Aniiseptic, re lives Rheumatism, Sprains, Neu ralgia, etc. Mrs. J. W. Pierce and Mrs. S. B. Pierce spent last Thursday in Richmond. Mr. Leonard Trueblood, of Hopewell, spent a few days in town last week. They used to say that when the dogwood bloomed out was the lime to go fishing. The vagrant law should be en forced in Weldon. Go to the roads or go to work. In advertising, always say what you believe if you want people to believe what you say. Eggs are getting cheaper. They were sold on the street Saturday for 30 cents per dozen. Sergeant Allen ZollicoH'er, of Ambulance Corps 317, Camp Lee, spent the week-end at home. As a general thing the other fel low has no use for your opinion unless it coincides with Ins own. Judge a man's true worth by what he has in his heart rather than by what he has in his pocket. A kind word is never spoken in vain. It has frequently saved married man the cost of a new set of dishes. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Suiter and Mrs. John Edwards, of Scotland Neck, spent a few hours in town Saturday. Miss Katherine Ward has return ed home from a pleasant visit to Greensboro and the western pan . of the State. The trees are putting on the jreen front, and if they don't look outthe.March weather is going to pa business for them. New Ikiis arriving every day at Mrs. I. A. Lewis'. Among the many good things which help to make up the happi ness of a home, are the weekly visits of this paper; try it. The good cow can be changed to the poor cow by abusive treat ment. If you really must use loud, violent language, buy a mule, Do not forget to bring your scrap iron, rags, brass, copper, etc., to "the man who pays the highest prices," Max Schwartz, l-'irst St., Weldon, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Shaw left Monday morning for Philadelphia, where they go to visit their son, Capt. W. T. Shaw, who will sail for France in a few days. Bad Cdi.d. To break up a bad culd, bathe the feet, or the whole body, in very hot water and drink a cup of hot ginger tea or hot lem onade, and go immediately to bed. Cot Kills. A remedy for coughs, recommended by many of the best doctors, is made by sleeping flax seed and straining it through a tin strainer before it gets too thick. Add an equal quantity of lemon juice and enough sugar to make a syrup. This should be taken freely. Notice to Chicken 0 nhus. The town ordinances say thai no chickens or other fowls shall be allowed to goat large in the cor porate limits of i he town under the penalty of $5 for each day. This is to notify all persons that the chicken law will be rigidly enforced. C. L. liVEKI ill, Chief Police. Advekhsed Letters The following is a list of letters remain ing "uncalled lor" in the Weldon postolhce : llarritie Perkins. Persons calling for above letters will please say "advertised," giv ing dale of advertising. 1). T.Ciakk, P. M., Weldon, N. C. Mar. II, IlllS. Pi tt. Together. The pros perity of a town is not guarded by the wealth of its inhabitants, but by the uniformity with which they pull together when an important undertaking is to be accomplished. A man wiih a thousand dollars at his command and a love for his town in his heari can do more for its upbuilding than the millionaire who locks up his capital and snaps his fingers at home enterprise. War Saving Stamps. Last week the drive for the sale of War Saving Stamps legan in the Wel don Graded Schools. To date the sale amounts to $610.00 in the white school and about $100 in ihe colored school. Several children are working faithfully in the con test for ihe prizes offered by Mr, S. F. Patterson, of Roanoke Rap ids. The above amounts do not include purchases made by teach ers and pupils prior to last week, when ihe coniesi opened. What Cain Did. When Cain had killed off one-fourth of the people of the earth, leaving only three, then went into the laud of Nod and builded a city, it is evi dent that he did not sit around like a lump on a log and growl about the Nod real estate and people He was not himself, perhaps, the most exemplary of men, and if he had some reason to emigrate from the land of his birth, he did not mope and whine, but got hold of a piece of ground and went to work m do something. The man who mold build uo a city under such auspices is the kind of material we ivuni in Weldon: and we will not inquire too minutely into his ante cedents, so tnai ne lanes nutu iikc a man and can be eooa at least Bui what is more, Cain did not advise his son to "go west" and .... F tha Hpnrl nIH inun H gel uui vi i, iv mwm . - - - named the city after him, believed in it, worKea it, pougni ins goous there and Kept nis money at nome. Okgan Recital. The recital given at the Baptist church last Wednesday evening, March (ith, by Mortimer Browning, organist, was mm occasion long to be remem bered hv those so tnriunate as in have li . ..i cl him. Mr. Browning is an artist of unusual abiliiy, and in his rendering of a carefully se lected program, showed not only talent, but the result of earnest, conscientious work, which is as necessary in producing a good musician, as in any vocation in life. ClU.EUUATED TllEIK BIRTHDAYS. Miss Florence F'reid celebrated her ninth birthday last week at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. F'reid, on Maple street. After a jolly time spent in playing games dainiy refreshments were served. She received iiiiti' a number of pn-ity ptwl'niv Little Miss Josephine F'reid was hostess to a number of her hide friends a few days ago, the occasion being her seventh birth day. After a merry lime spent in playing games delicious refresh incuts were served. Little Miss Josephine received quite a number of presents. Reelected Credit Upon the School. Friday morning, March Sth, the colored graded school rendered a War Saving Stamp program and organized a Thrift Society among the school children. The program, which was almost entirely relative to thrift and econ omy was well rendered by the children taking part, and reflected credit upon the school. After the school had finished their part of the program, addresses were delivered by Hon. W. E. Daniel, chairman of the city school board, Supt. A. L:. Akers, of the County Schools, Rev. L. N. Tay lor, rector of the Fpiscopal church' o Roanoke Rapids, and Supt. W. C. Allen, of the city schools. All of these addresses were along the line of saving money by purchas ing War Saving Stamps. Subscrip tions to the amount of $72 were taken. Free Dental Work. All reg istrants who have been placed in Class One ( I ) by the trial board, examined and found physically fit for lirst line service can have necessary dental work done free by applying to the following den tists in the county: At Enfield Dr. Highsmith. Ai Littleton- Dr. Perry. At Scotland Neck Dr. Keel. At Roanoke Rapids Dr. Melds. At Weldon-Dr. Ward. Each registrant should apply to the office nearest his place of resi dence. Dr. W. J. Ward, Dr. E. A. Perry, Dr. Highsmith, Committee for Halifax county WAN papers in county will please copy. Mrs. J. S. Turner Hostess Mrs. J. S. Turner entertained the Junius Daniel Chapter LI. D, C. at their regular meeting on Wednesday, March (ith. Accord ing to a general request the presi dent opened ihe meeting with prayer lor the soldiers and sailors and the secretary read several im portant business communications. The Chapter had already sent i contribution to the endowment of the "Zebiilon Baird Vance" bed in an American Hospital in France but funds for another bed in the .line ward and this will be done ai once. The ladies were also urged lu buy Thrill Stamps and to be ready to buy other Liberty Bonds through the Woman's Committee when the third general sale begins. The women's organizations in Weldon are patriotic 10 the core and are "doing their bit to win this war" and praying fora speedy righteous peace. Mrs. Turner served a simple ice course as the chapter decided sometime since lo serve only sim Die refreshments until the end of the war. Mrs. J. T. Dawson and Mrs. E T. Zollicofter were invited guests and the chapter adjourned with their motto to meet in April with Mrs. W. E. Daniel.
