THE ROAN OK E NEWS Thuksday, July 4, 1918. NOTICE. There will be a regular convoca tion of Roanoke Chapter 81 R. A. M. in Masonic Hall, every first and third Wednesday evenings. E. Clark, Jr., Sec'y. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. A man without hands can never feel well. Worry is a good friend of the undertaker. When passion is king, reason is dethroned. Miss Florence Allen is visiting friends in Macon. Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Johnston were in town Sunday. Some men take what is in sight and hustle for more. Almost any caller is a bore if he comes at the wrong time. 666 contains no alcohol, arsenic nor other poisonous drugs. Life is worth living a great deal better than most of us live it. If Ananias were living today he would not be considered so much. If at first some women don't succeed they marry a second time. Some girls give up a kiss as if they were having a tooth pulled. Mr. Gus Travis is home from the Business College, Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Mary Jackson, of Raleigh, is visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Pierce. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Farber left for Greenville, S. C, Sunday night where they go to visit their nephews, Messrs. William and Mike Josepbson. Rev. J. G. Shamburger announced to his congregation at the service on Sunday morning last that he had been in communication with Bishop Darlington, who has been assigned to the N. C. Conference, and is now at Lake Junaluska, and he hopes to have him come to Weldon in the near future and dedicate the M. E. Church here. Owing to business complications, the church which has been in use for several years, has never been formally dedicated. 1 he pastor and congregation are anxious that this should be done and are happy that these arrangements are being made. Bishop Darlington is one of the new bishops elected at the late general conference held in Atlanta, but he comes to North Carolina highly endorsed and we will be glad to have him in our town. Contagious Diseases. The following is a list of names and ad dresses of contagious diseases re ported during the month of June in the county of Halifax: Septic Sore Throat Garfield Scott, Route 3, Enfield. I case, Diptheria Rosa Williams, Pal myra. I case. Typhoid Fever Carry Jones, William Jones, Jr., Weldon; Celie Powell, Enfield; Nep Jenkins, Fau cetts Township, Convict Camp; Mrs. S. B. McLean, Scotland Neck 5 cases. Mildred Whitehead, Vernon Whitehead, Ruth Davis, Henry T Davis, George Davis, John Davis, Scotland Neck; Violet Drew, Pal myra. 27 cases. I. E. Green, County Quarantine Officer. Got Something for Noth ing, -When a person gets some thing for nothing, said something usually contains a joker or has string attached to it. For instance, a certain preacher received from patent medicine company an offer to provide his church with song books free of any charge. It was explained thai there would be few ads in the front and back of the books, but that these ads would not be offensive to the members of the congregation, since the books were being secured for nothing. The preacher gave the order and the books arrived. He found the ads to be mildly worded and de cided to use the books. He ex plained from the pulpit how the books had been secured, and an nounced that they would sing No. 274. Imagine the people's sur prise when, on reaching the sec ond verse, they found themselves singing, "Hark, the Heavenly an gels sing, Johnson's pills are just the thing; Angelic voices meek and mild two for man and one for child." 66 cure Bilious Feyer. THE D1UVE For War Savings Stamps In Wel don Township. Last week Weldon township had its part in the great intensive drive for War Savings Stamps. The quota for this township is eighty five thousand dollars, and after hard work on the part of the com mittee only forty-five thousand dollars have been raised. The canvassing committee worked faithfully and perseveringly. For the while population the canvass ers were Mrs. W. T. Shaw, Mrs. L. C. Draper, Mrs C. W. Greg ory, Mrs. lieorge t.. ureen, Mrs. H. V. Bounds, Mrs. W. A.Pierce, Mrs. O. W. Pierce, Miss Londa Shamburger, Messrs. C. E. Car ter, H. D. Allen, J. B. Zollicofter, J I. Wyche, M. M. Drake, C. R. limry, J. T. Branch. The committee worked splen didly, and deserve the thanks of the community. Mrs. W. T. Shaw did some very effective work in the Weldon Cotton Mill. Practi cally every operative approached subscribed, and all seemed ready and willing to subscribe. Mr. C. P. Anthony was chair man of the canvassers for the col ored people, and his committee consisted of the following persons: Mr. R. A. Cheek, Mrs. D. R. In gram, Mr. 1. H. Singleton, Mrs. Fannie Kornegie, Mr. J. H. Boyd, Rev. Dock Shearin, Rev. J. H. Nero, Mrs. J. A. Alston, Mrs. R. J. Perry, Mrs. P. L. Edwards, Mrs. B. F. Edwards, Mr. W. W. Kay, Mr. Frank Richards, Mr. Walter Day. Dr. Tinsley had charge of the School House meetings and car ried ihem out with remarkable suc cess. Some special mention should be made of the enthusiastic response made by the colored people. The committee did remarkable work, some of them hiring machines at their own expense to see people scattered about in the country, and nearly every person approached made a subscription. While all members of the com mittee worked hard, on ihe whole, have been courteously received, the figures show that we are far below our quota. More work remains to be done. Other townships in the coumy have gone over the top. Weldon must not fall short of her pan. It is true that limes are hard, but what "onditions would we have were Germany to win this war? I here is no sacrifice too great. II MUSI tst UUINt. There are many who have done much they can do more. Let it not be said that the victory was won, and that weldon towhnship failed to do her share in the win ning. Make your pledge now. Pay any time this year. Call any mem ber of the committee, or Rev. N. C. Duncan, township chairman, who will be glad to receive your subscription. D. The Alarm of Fire. The alarm of fire was given on Sunday last when a large box containing paper and other trash in the rear of "The Leader" store was found in a blaze. Some one in passing evidently had thrown a lighted match into the trash which quickly ignited and in a very few minutes, had it not been discovered, would have resulted in a disastrous (ire. This is not the first time this has occurred recently and the law against the accumulation of paper and oilier inflammables in the al leys and in the rear of the stores should be rigidly enforced and a heavy fine imposed. There is a vigorous crusade going on in North Carolina against hres and we should see thai we do our part to fight this destructive enemy and reduce insurance rates which have almost in some instances become prohibitive. Let our city officers look to this. We have lately received an 18 page pamphlet entitled Highway Maintenance in North Carolina, by Mr. D. H. Winslow, of the North Carolina Highway Commission and Professor Charles R. Thomas, of the State College. This is the first of a series to be issued by the College dealing in popular style with some of the every-day engi neering problems which confront the people of the State. This bul letin on the maintenance of roads is ncuiiy and appiupiimciy liius iraied from photographs. Citizens of the Slate who desire copies can get them by writing to the Regis trar's office at the College, West Raleigh. Advertised Letters. In Scotland Neck we find that people are praising Doan's Kidney Pills as highly as here in Weldon. Being so near by, the statement of a Scotland Neck resident is of par ticular interest. Weldon people will do well to profit by the experi ence of J. C. Braxton, blacksmith, Main Si , Scotland Neck. He says "I had dull pains in my back and across my loins. Mornings I was sore and stiff and could hardly bend lo pick up my tools. I had headaches and dizzy spells and cold settled on my kidneys, ma king my condition worse. The kidney secretions were irregular in passage, sometimes too frequent and then again scanty. I finally used Doan's Kidney Pills and they greatly relieved me. They put my back in good shape and all symp toms of kidney trouble left." Price 60c. at all dealers.
