Pierce and children, and Misses Eleanor and Sarah Edwards, of Kinston, who have been spending some time at Ocean View, have returned home. Mrs I. F. Green and daughter, 1 M.ss Grace (Museley, arc visiting friends in Fowhatan county, Va. Miss Arlene Joyner, who has been visiling Mi.-, J. S. I'.irr, has returned tu her home in Green ville. Mr. Chas. J. Adkins lost a val uable colt last week. He had just refused $150 for this beautiful an imal. Miss Inez Smitliwick, of La Grange, who has been visiting Miss Bessie Owen, has returned home. Johnston, ol Littleton, spent Wednesday of last week in lown the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pierce. Judge J. M. Mullen, of Peters burg, was in lown Friday. He was en rouie to Rosemary to visit his son, Mr. T. W. Mullen. Miss Allie Kelley is in Baltimore this week, buying goods for Mrs. P. A. Lewis' millinery establish ment. She will be absent about ten days. Mrs. P. A. Lewis, who has been spending some time in Baltimore, has returned home, bringing wuh her Mrs. Heidt, who will be her head milliner this season. Mrs. Nannie E. Bridgers, alter spending several days very pleas antly in the home of her nephew, Mr. D. C. Johnson, has returned to her home in Margarettsville. Mr. H. C. Spiers left last Friday for Buffalo Lithia Springs, where he will remain for several days. Mr. Spiers has been in fee ble health for some time and his many friends wish for him a speedy return of his former good health and a safe return home. Capt. and Mrs. Philip Moore have returned to Weldon alter an absence of about a year. Captain Moore has been in France a great er part of this time, while Mrs. Moore has remained in Brooklyn, N. Y. The Rocky Mount band made good music lor the oc casion. Ciii.mnkySikuuk By Light ning. During the severe storm last Saturday afternoon, lightning struck one of the chimneys on the residence of Mr. W. A. Pierce. It knocked the top of the chimney or! and shattered the other part down to the roof, breaking right much of the slate by the falling brick. lJli:t) INKAK I ll.LERY. Died at the residence of Capt. C. J. Rhem, near Tillery, on Sunday last, Miss Mary Lane Bryan, aged about ()3 years. She was a sister of Mrs. Rhem and an aunt of Mrs. J. S. Waste House Burned. On last Saturday morning about 3 o'clock the fire alarm was turned on. The people were some little lime locating the tire. It was finally located ai Shaw's Cotton Mill, South Weldon, The waste house caught tire from some un known cause, and burned to the ground before the fire company got there. We learn there were about 30 bales of waste in the build ing. Loss, including the building, about $3,000. No insurance. Millinery Opening. Mrs. P A. Lewis will have her fall milli nery opening on Thursday and Friday this week 4th and 5th. Be sure and go and see the many pretty and stylish hats. Play Gkounds i:ok Chillikln. The awakening of public con science and the desire to have wholesome recreation lor the chil dren of Weldon have resulted in an cHon lo establish a play ground for the children where they can have healthy amusement. To this end a commiiiee of ladies composed of Mrs. Ida Wilkins, Mrs. W. A Pierce and Mrs. Willie G. Cohen, visited the hoard of commissioners at their August meeting to enlist their co-operation and interest The ladies were most cordially greeied, and were highly pleased to find that the commissioners were in accord with their plans. The Commissioners promised to have the small park cleaned ai once, to keep it clean, and to have the Fi nance Couiuniiee to investigate and to report what could he done in regard to play-ground fixtures. It cet i.iinly speaks well lor the lown of Weldon to have as its rep renseniatives, men who are willing to spend their eltort to make the town what it should be.
