IT is all right to speak yuui mind provided yon mind how you speak If those belligerent Poles keep on they may find themseves in a hole. THE man who speculates in cot ion futures and his money are soon parted. Germany thought it would pay to promise, and therefore promised to pay. Colonel House is writing a beok, and he may begin talking eventually. A favorite indoor sport is planning what other people ought to do with their money. Now it is said that Lenine is crazy. It took them a long lime to find it out. We should put lightweights on the bench if we want the scales of justice held even. Deflation of currency has also helped deflate some peoples's opin ion of themselves. And there will be something else lo worry about if the Japanese ever beat us playing ball. An exchange thinks Mr. Bryan might have been elected president if he had lived in Ohio. JAPAN'S position as to Siberia (terns to be that the yellows and tbe Reds shall not mix. f E may have won the war, but we seem to have lost the morale that was used in winning it. We fought to make the world safe for democracy, and now the Republicans are in power. We might have more patience with the Irish if they did not insist (hat we take sides with them. THE disabled soldiers complain of cold treatment, although Con gress gives them a lot of hot air The former kaiser would be in a bad fix now if he hadn't saved up something during his reigny days Political economists tell us that strikes never pay, and yet we cannot win baseball games without them. A scientist says the ancient Pe ruvians had jazz music. And you know what happened to the an cient Peruvians. Senator Borah wants to abol ish all useless Federal jobs. If he succeeds there will be a thinning out of the Senate. BUT maybe you would be a Bol shevist, too, if you lived in Russia and had to speak the kind of lan guage that they use. At any rate no other scientist bas claimed to be the first to dis cover whatever it is that Einstein claims to have discovered. A good many editors lost inter est in the proposed press confer ence in Honolulu when they learn ed that Honolulu is dry, too. AND what do you suppose has become of those women who were picketing the white house during the suffrage nght in Congress? President Harding is carry ing out another of Woodrow Wil son s policies. He is living in the White House and is not paying the government any rent. NOTICE! TO WATER USERS! Unless something is done to keep from wasting water on lawns, the washing of automobiles and allow ing so much leakage through their toilet fixtures, the town will be without water and ice, as the ice plant is snffering for lack of water sow. The rocking chair was an Amer ican invention and it has always been a peculiarly American institu tion. It was unkown in Europe until near the close cf the World War, when it was introduced for the use ol convalescents in Ameri can army hospitals. It soun spread to the hospitals of the allies and then among the civilian population and now the people are said to be delighted with it and are wonder ing how they got along without it for so long. The war was a terrible thing but we have not et been convinced thai it was fought in vain. It had some compensations ai any raie, not the least of which was the in troduction of the American rocking j chair to millions who had never I known it; and for this one thing perhaps millions w lio are yet un- I'oin will some day rise up and ' call us blessed. Kub My-Tism kills infection OUR SLOVENLY SPEKCII These directions came with a j sanitary nursing bottle : i "When ihe baby is through with the eottle it should be taken apart and soaked in boiling water, wash ed thoroughly and then put away in a clean place." This is absurd. Of course one knows that it is the bottle, and not the baby, that Is to be taken apart and soaked in boiling water, but our common sense teaches us that rather than the wording of the di rections for using But we meet up with equally slovenly language in ordinary con versation every day. A great many people w ho ought io know better use wretched grammar ha bitually, and the tendency in this direction seems to be growing. The double negative is getting to be a minor offense. It is just as easy to be correct in speech as it is to be slovenly. Then why not be correct? Say what you mean, even if you do not al ways mean what you say. A LESSON FOR PARENTS. Last week the New York papers featured the runaway of two high school boys and a high school girl in a high-powered automobile be longing to the parents of one of the boys. The runaways returned in a few days and were promptly forgiven. As the New York World put it, "they are safe home again without even a spanking to punish them." But The World's editorial ob servations may well be pondered by all parents. The World said: "Isn't there some kind of moral in this for parents5 The sight of sixteen-year-old boys careering around the country in high power ered automobiles is a familiar sight. Their fathers at their age thought themselves lucky to have a bicycle or to obtain the loan of the family buggy for an evening drive. Now the young hopefuls preempt the family touring car as of righi, fill it with their young companions, race around the summer gardens and road houses and anticipate while just out of the kindergarten the risks and responsibilities of adult manhood in expensive machines." Youth must have its fling, men have said from time immemorial; but is it well not to put some kind of a limit to this (ling Reckless and dangerous conduct may, and usually does, bring about disaster and life-wrecking results. TWO OF LIFE'S SECRETS Men have always yearned for the secrets of success and happi ness in hie. In the old davs when the masses of the people were ignorant, these secrets could be possessed only by the learned few but now with the spread of educa lion and the diffusion of knowl edge they are within the reach of all. It is now generally recognized that success consists in what one puts into life raiher than in what one gets out of it. In other words, success is service and service is success. The man who renders the best service achieves the great est success, no matter what his work or station. And men have found, and are willing io share the secret with others, that happiness lies in the kind of life that one lives rather than where one lives. One may be just as happy in a hut on a farm or in a cottage on a back street in i small town as in a mansion in a great city. We find happiness with us, if we find it at all. Happiness comes from what we ourselves do and think; not from what others do and think. These are Ihe two great secrets of life, and they are closely bound together. Happiness rarely if ever comes until after success the suc cess of service. If we want to be happy we must first be of service. There are other secrets of life. of course, but these two are the greatest and the most sought after. And they are also the most easilv obtained. j 666 cures Bilious Fever. j Annual Statement Of Accounts Audited and Ordered Paid by Board of Commissioners of the Town of Weldon For The Fiscal Year Ending April 30, 1921 MAY 3, 1920. 7.
