The Best of the Season." 1 That is a good story they tell on a portly and popular acquaintance of ours. He is a mail agent -on ouc of the roads leading into the city,, and thinks, like many, another of us, that there is nothing for thawing a fellpk on these cold riights like a blister in the shape of 5a hot punch, rapplied internally, of course.; During the miserably cold weather we" had here last week the old gentleman arrived in the city after one Of the-oldest rides f he has ever had. Having somfe business! down . town he carefully locked the door of his car, or, rather of his compartment, arid came down into the city. The car in which he carries his mail, be it remarked, is somewhat peculiar in construction, there being but one end door and that leading into the mail bajr region Soon alter our agent had left the car was turned around oh the turn table, in readiness for next J day's train, "which-was then being made j up. While down town the agent net with some friends who had not gladdened his sight for many years, and in lingering together arid tabbing of old times it is! no wonder that the hours slipped by unheeded. At mid night a burly figure might have been seen on his way up Front street, In route for that couch in the mail caf where the agent had been wont to take, his virtuous slumbers and a few minutes after mid night he was seen,, key in hand,' trying in vain to enter the car, there being not only no lock on that end but no door. Com pletely crushed and confused the burly form next wended its way ito Brooklyn where dwelt a friend- This friend had retired but was mad to get up and dress himself when the two wended their way tot he residence-of Col. Brink: the Post -.- Master. Arriving there about, 1 o'clock hey lost uo time in rousing! the Colonel .who soon appeared arid euquiried why he was thus disturbed at 1. o'clock in the morning. In full and sonorous tones the reply came : "Col. Brink, I appeal to yen as a regularly organized official of the U. S. Government. Sir, my mail car has been robbed and not only that . but government locks have been broken, the door taken away &nd the end of tbc car boarded op. . Sir," I appeal to yon for justice la the name of George Washington and Andrew Jackson.'! It was sometime before Co!. Brink could make out the difficulty but when be did there- was a laugh on band that startled the midnight tillne33,of Uxat neighborhood.
