We were in hopes to give yesterdaan account of the proceedings of the Histori cal and Scientific Society, but no data were furnished lis. It seems that a reso lution was passed forbidding the remarks of individuals, on debate, being made public ; .therefore our reports, until some other arrangements can be made, must be con lined to such items as wc may get through the courtesy of members. , Mr. A. il. Black J presented informally, before the meeting was called to order, a human skull, the lower jaw-bone of a deer and a "light wood knot, all exhumed ..'acci dentally from the same locality, in digging a ditch on his land at Rocky Point. Many conjectures and surmises were raised hy difiiereiit members, but as the matter goes to the, appropriate committee, we will not venture on crude opinions. This and such other problems arc made matters of study by the Society, and rightly enough they object to committing themselves to crudities. ' - ' The meeting being now organized, the regular essayist, Col. James G. Burr,. pre sented a paper op .the "Early History of the'Cxpb Fear.? This historical account extended from the early settlement in 1G50 and 1604 by the New England settlers and the Yeamans Colony, to a period within memory of some of our oMest citizens. Most of the living inci dents clustered around old St. James ( huivh. the venerable and homely struc ture which prcceeded the present build ing. No paper has yet been written on tins subject, which jdves so good an insight into ihe - manners, religious culture and doing of society as it existed in Wilming ton from its foundation to tho burning of the old Court House. We cau ai!y speak of important fea tures of this very good paper. The lists of biography of the dead now sleeping in St. James' Churqh-ybrd adds very much to our knowledge of the old citizens,: and most of ns will le surprised to know that the irortal remains of Thomas(?) Godfrey, the author of the first tragedy written in America, rests there. Those desiring to gratify "their curiosity about this tragedy are referred to Duyknick's Encyc. of Lit. The Cohqe"g paper wa admirably. set off by the verses of a native humorist, Mr. Hooper (?), m the launching of a ship in Wilriiigtou, and the ducking of the old British Cwsul. Wo will embrace-the first opportunity of presenting this paper entire to c ur readers, and hope besidea this that the public may be? able to bear it delivered by. the' author: - .-This 'Society is doing a good work iu rescuing historical items k from oblivion, and we beljeve it has such tleroents t)f success in it, It is intended, we believe, to make everything subservient to the elimination of truth, and if the commu nity ifi occasionally disaopdutcd. in not hearing wh,a aecuaa ki.thjm maUcra of public interest or entertainment, they may know that it is because these subjects are in me nana ot appropriate bections. and that they can only see the light of the world after they are in uch ; a completed condition as to be worthy of the fntl en dorsement of the Society. - ' , I" v ,,WWIF"''J" 1 My-n mwm - -. . .j 10, 1877.
