Judicious for the attaic vJl ll?robjcct for the trainmen to fcplete possession of the road, he 1I1CC fi every loaf of bread made in this country. You haven't heard about ; it? Why, its making a great ssnsation i n the West. It's a long story, but I can give you the gist of it in a few momcnts I am, by the way, the largest miller in the UniStd; State my mills being atMirineapolisiMinn. All millers ars now using what is . called the high process of grinding, which was generally introduced into this country about 1S71, but bad been in use in Europe fur fifty years. I will explain the terms of high ami low grinding. Low, grinding means the bringing the upper or running mill-stone low down and in close proximity to the nether stone, by reason of which the lar gest amount of Hour is derived lrorn the first grinding, but, as necessarily mu3t be the case, a great dealt of the outer coating of the wheat, together with the cmbroy, Would be reduced to such fineness as to go into the flour, and separaion was im possible. . The bigh grinding is the direct ormositc of the low. and the obiect is at x. t the first grindiug to get rid of bran at once and makes as little Hour as possible. This is done by blowing the bran off tbe coarse-ground grain or- middlings, and afterwards grinding fine the smalf white granules. I bought my machines in Fiance. This improved process is now absolutely indispensable to successful millinjr. Deprive any miller of it and he is ruined. "A ring of speculators in Washington have lately got hold of an old patent, never used, and have got it reissued so as to cover all the machines ior effecting the process I have described. It is called the Cochrane patent. After quietly taking out tbe reissue, th'cy went on without making any noise and took a suit up to the Supreme Court, with a man of straw for defendant, and as no real defence was made, the easily obtained a decision based on an oDinion1 civen by Justice Miller. Now this gang of patent swindlers arc attacking the heaviest millers with sui' expecting to terrify all the others. They have singled out the Jewells of I o)klyn, the llaxalls of Richmond, and my mills at Minneapolis. . They have put mc under bonds in . tne enormous sum of $2o0,000pcnd'.ng the conclusion of in junction proceedings. "I liarn that1 the rascals propose to1 be magnanimous, and to grant license to such millers as will rccogr;ze! the validity of their patent, for the moderate sum of $G, 000 for pad run" of stones, which for this city alone amounts to tije vast sum of $1,200,000. While primarily this great sum would come from the millers, really it a I comes o.U of the farmer and consu mer at last, and tboy arc the roal people most interested in the defeat of this ouor mity. As there arc over 0,000 runs of sMnes iu the Uuited States, this license will amount to $35,000. 00. Wc are going to bring this great outrage before Comrrcss next winter and try to have the patent canceled. The grain-growing sec tions of the We'st are indignant at the ex posure of this enormous fraud, and the grain-consuming East ought to be equally aroused, for the attempted tax on the chief ueccisary of life affects both alike." The Nashville American iosucs cat cchism: ( , I 1 Why did they strike? I Because of a reduction of wages. .Why the reduction?
