Tarboro Southerner : J oseph W.. Lloyd, 'ricf of this county, has in his possession ' tisane' ajpple brandy; which is now, he says, JVsixty years old. It was riven to him .T. several years ago, by Mi.ss Helen Slade, of lrH ilarfcin county. Ill Durham riant: S. II. Ilouiuitree, of attf Iviaston, N. C, and one of the Grand rccturerB of F. A. Line were in town on Friday last andper fected all the arrangements. Capt. Geo. . r-V ' H. Brown will probably be the agent at ,t: ;r "thi place. ISdenton Times: A friend of ours a ' .citizen of Dare county told us a day or -. t,"( two since, that one day last Fall he made a haul with his seine in the ocean, and . ; -f caught oue hundred and two sharks. The seine was only 280 yards long and he says ' ' that twice as many sharks got away as he s, Unded, and besides it was not a good day y'liV , for sharks. - Charlotte Observer: Mr. Thos. V. .J- Pittman, Unitod States Commissioner in ' ' shis city, is making an effort to secure the ' aDDointment sf commissioner of deed of all ' r. ' ,tne States in the Union.'. He has the ap i ij $ iwintments from Virginia and Soath Caro lina, and a few dajs ago received his commission from Gov. Hart ran ft of Penn sylvania. .Charlotte Observer : Passengers on the down train yesterday afternoon report that two convicts became engaged in an altercation while at work on the Western North Carolina Ilailroad, when one struck the other on the head with a shovel, split ting open his skull. There are no further particulars. Both men enaed n il0 difficulty were colored. fKaleigh Ketcs: We are informed that W. II. Deaver and F. K. Davis, of Ashcville, and Wm. A. Ross, of Morganton, were . arrested on Tuesday, by Maj. Wagoner , -charged with receiving "hush mohey" and ' bribes from distillers. They were taken to Morganton for examination before the United States . Commissioner, on Wed nesday. Our informant had not heard the result. Tarboro Southerner: Hyde co:n;y has been the recipient of ono of the lisaviest rain-falls that has ever been known, here. It lasted long, and the damage done is in calculable. AH through Currituck, down into Swan Quarter, up and around the Jake,T in Juniper Bay and Engelhard, thence to Fairfield, the crops are damaged worse than in 1867, by one-half. Except ing Wysocking, Whito Plains, the Donald farm, and a blt running around the lake, the corn is actually dying, and some of the farmers will probably cut it down and live it for fodder. Some think they will hardly, raise bread. , Charlotte Observer: Ki. Keinhardt, colored, who has until lately had employ ment around the engine house of the Air Line Ilailroad, in this city, has recently . come to grief. He got on an engine in the yard the other morning to move it for some purpose or other. The hingiwas chuck full of steam, and seizing the throt tle valve he pulled her wide open. The engine shot forward like a streak of light ning and Ki; seeing that the brake would be of no avail, threw the reverse lever back, which doubled the engine up all in heap and then sent her whizzing on the bick-track. Before the self-constituted engineer could collect his wits, she burst into another engine behind and was pre- ariug to . do more mischief yet when leinhardt threw the lever forward. This turned the engine in the other direction, and a full head of steam still being on, she dashed forward, ran into-the engine house, burst through it and finally landed on the other side. When the engine did finally stop, Ki. dismounted, looked around, drew his slccvo across his fore- .head and strolled off, and hasn't been back since. ! . How General Crook Got II is Wife. John Dailey,, who keeps a hotel at Oak land, Garrett county, Maryland, is a can didate for doorkeeper of the Federal House of Representatives. A writer in the Philadelphia "Commonwealth" gives a bit of romance about John's family, as follows : ' "There is a bit of romance connected with Dailey's family well worth relating, as it brings to mind one of the pleasant reminiscences of our great internal con flict.! During the war the city of Cum berland was for a time occupied by Fede ral soldiers Knder command of Generals Crook and Kelley. On a certain occasion about midnght when no apprehension of danger was felt a small party of Confede rate troops passed through the Federal lines, and, as your readers are aWare, cap tured and carried off-the two Generals in com man J. That party was commanded by a son of John Dailey. The young Confederate officer carried his distinguish ed captives to his father's house and quartered them there as prisoners of war, to himUreatins: them with all the kiudness and consideration due their high rank. It sq happened that John Dailey had a comely daughter, albeit she had proclivities of a Southern iud therefore, rebellious tincture, and General Crook, although an excellent soldier and thoroughly loyal, was not proof against the claims of female loveli ness, no matter if thev were reflected through a dis loyal medium, and while he remained a reluctant prisoner in charge of the gallant' Confederate officer, he became a willing captive at the hands of his fair sister, whom ho woed and wedded as his lawful wife. All things considered, I think John Dailey should be elected doorkeeper of' the next House of Re presentatives by a unanimous vote." CTXZO&33SA&Z1 I? It I CUB. mi is COMMERCIAL NEWS.
