Two men, Wm. McGold rick of 30G West Thirty-ninth street and Michcal Ililcy of Fcrtj'-thirJ street and Eleventh avenue, were in advance, and were digging a broad hole about twenty yards from the avenue. After they; had reached a depth of about fifteen feet and while they were still excavating, a crack-, ling noise alarmed them. They dropped their shovels and started to run out of the trench, but were too latej With a great crash the sider of the ditch fell, and they were buried under three feet of gravel and pavingstoncs. Their terrified companions threw down their tools and ran in a body to Fifth avenue. A crowd gathered about the sewer, but no one attempted to resciire the men until a body of police from the Thirtieth street station arrived. The of ficers, under command of Capt. Williams, went quickly to' work, and, with the aid of a carman from Fifth avenue, unearthed thamen. As soon as the earth was from their heads, the buried men cried out, "For God's sake get us out. Don't Stop." They were soon completely uncovered and lifted to the sidewalk. After a few min utes they recovered and walked home. The accident was due entirely to the care lessness of the men in not properly sup porting the sides of the trench with braces. . i - m " Quarterly Meetings.
