The Senate was full, except Morton and
Sharon, and the excluded Senators from
Louisiana and South Carolina.

Objection was withdrawn iu the case
of Darrell of Louisiana, and ho was sworn
in. .
The case of Elam of Louisiana, was dis
cussed,' but no result reached.
The President's message- was read and
rcfercd to the committee of the Whole.

have ever seen grown in this State or in

and five ounces and had a delightful

about 140 men on the train, divided
among the companies, as follows : Meck
lenburg Riflemen, 49 ; Ifolk Rifles, 23 ;
Charlotte Greys, 35 ; Hofnets' Nest Rifle
men, 23. The companies are all equipped
for the regular encampment, and left in

Southern Home The yield of the year
will be on an average of about 175 to 200
pounds of lint cotton to the acre. As
compared wjth last year the yield is con
sidered by a few to be about the same or
perhaps a little better, while the majority
of replies report a decrease in the yield of
from 25 to 40 per cent. . , j
Southern Dome.' Mr. J. N. D. Wilson
of Cabarrus icountv, reports- the cotton
crop as verv lisht in his section. He runs
a mill and cotton gin on McKee's Creek,
and states that ho has only ginned about
a dozen or so bales of cotton thus far,
whereas up jto this time last year he had
ginned over ouc hundred. ! !
Newbern Nut Shell: The large (and
commodious, residence of J. G. Cox, in
K inston, caught fire about 0 o'clock Fri
day night,, from a detective flue in one ef
the chimneys, and was totally consumed.
The house: was occupied at the time by

Midyett's ' Seminary. The property is
said to be fully insured. 1 "
Charlotte Observer." Two or three
ladies who had attended Calvary Mission
church and observed that it was in need
of a communion sqrvice, interested them
selves last week to the extent of canvass
ing the city and raising a considerable
sum of Auoncy, with which they purehas

casions. The gift was a'( highly accepta
ble one, and was much appreciated by the
pastor as well as by the congregation in

.Newbern Nut Shell: Mr. Oliver S.
Dewey, a highly respected citizen of this
place, was stricken with apoplexy on one
of our streets yesterday. A friend being
with him at the(time, assistance was im-j
mediately procured and Mr. Dewey re
moved to his residence, where, after the
lapse of about two hours, during which
time - a copious amount of blood was
drawn from him, ice applied to his fore-
head, mustard plasters U3ed on his body
and other medical treatment administered
by two eminent physicians, he. opened his
eyes in consciousness, with all his facul
ties restored, to' the delight of his many
friends whojwetei standing around his bed
side. Durpg Mr. Dewey's short illness,
much excitement was manifested on our
streets and much anxiety suffered by his
relatives, as, it was feared the attack would
prove fatal. i I
