Cass Carpenter; to Expiate, His Columbia, S. C.f Tuesday, November 13 At 4 o'clock this evening tho jury id the Carpenter case notified the Court that they had agreed upon the verdict, and after a few minutes the solicitor and the clerk' arrived. Alter the nsual ques tions the jury rendered a verdict ;of guilty. The verdict was not unexpected by the aadktn;ee-, arit appears from the testimony that Carpenter's guilt was clear,1 and the verdict a foregone conclusion. Judge Carpenter, for the accused, offer ed the usual motion in arrest of judgment and an application for a new ttjal, upon the grounds that the verdict was 'in con flict witlhiha testimony. ' At the same time, anticipating that the Judge would overraJthe motion, he made a pathetic appeal in behalf of the prisoner, and hop ed hia Honor would consider the health of the acdased and the apparently insigni ficant character of the offence as com par ed witfiher and more' wealthy-' delin quents. 'Judge Townsend promised to con sider the case wle. hccurric to pronoriP.ee .sentence, and the Court adjourned until Friday morning at 10 o'clock. C.McK.
