CAROLINA. Rockingham Spirit: The gin house of Eben N. Ingram, near Grassy Mands in thiscounty, was burned, together with some two thousand pounds of cotton, yes terday was a week ago. The fire was ac cidental. Newbeniian: At the instance of the claimants, the suit against the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad moving for the appointment of a Receiver, has been post poned until Tuesday next ; no legal cause exists for any such appointment. Newborn Nut Shell: Mr. Robert Han cock, Jr., has received his commission as Deputy Collector of Customs for this port. Mr. Giles W. Young, who formerly held this position, has, we learn, Teceivtid an appointment in one of the Departments at the National Capitol. Faleigh Observer: Dr. A. H. Redforh, aent of the Nashville Publishing Ilouse, while on his visit to 'he North Carolina Conference, sold over SGOO worth of books to the preachers and laymen. He also re ceived 225 subscribers to the Nashville Chriatiim. Advocate, the organ ot tne jen- $ eral Conference. Hickory Press: We were again presented this week with some fine specimens of corn, raised in different sections of Q itawbi county, by Messrs Daniel. Hawin, AI. Wil fonr and M. L. Cline Mr. CTme's were raised nrar this place one ear of " W hite' measuring 13 inches, and one of tho "Cut rituck" of 'ess length, containing 2j row?, the grains measuring of an inch in length. Charlotte Observer: Thursday, about" 1 o'clock, a white operative in the factory of 'the Great Falls Manufacturing Company at Rockingham, Richmond county, was leaning out of a third story window of the factory building, looking at some object be low, when he lost his balance, fell over the window sill and descended to the .earth with ail tne iou:e w m "t,-"-. Many of his bones were broken. Lis body Piniipfl and mangled, a'Ki life was extinct a few moments atter - the fall. ' Raleigh Neirs The recent pain ful death of Mr. Conigland of Halifax, calls to mind the fact that he is the fourth of the able counsel engaged in the im peachment trial of Gov. Holden in 18C9, who have passed away from earth ; Gov. Graham and Gov. Bragg, of the prose cution, and Mr. Boyden, and now Mr. Conigland, of the defense. Raleigh Observer.' A young man "by the namo of Nipper, employed at the Falls of Neuse saw mill, met with a very painful accident, on Thursday evening, by which he lost one of his legs. The only facts in regard to tho matter that i we were able to obtain were, that by a misstep he stumbled against the circular saw while in motion, and had his leg from the heel to the knee split open, and badly mangled, nearly severing tho limb just below the knee, but strangely not having the large artery in tho leg cut. Efforts to obtain the services of a physician were made but none were ob tained until yesterday morning. Our informant did not know if the leg was amputated, but supposed it was, as the bone and muscle were completely cut to pieces. Raleigh News. Pretty Good Fees. The application for fees, by Messrs. Brewster and others, counsel in the Swazey suit, involves, as we understand it, about the following facts : The coun sel at first demanded $100,000 fees; $25, 000 were paid, and Mr. Batehelor was appointed referee, who reported in favor of allowing $40,000 additional to the $25,000 already paid, besides what might be asked for, for the reforee and other minor expenses. Messrs. Fowle a, d Car ter argued in opposition to the confirma tion of the report, v Should the report be confirmpd, we think it would.be well for those concern ed to negotiate with tho counsel , Messrs. Brewster and others, and ascertain if they 11 till th n rnilrnan in Tarf. na v arm what time can be obtained on the remain dcr. " v Hotel Antral. Pucell HcuskWitmington, N. C. Oldest Case on the Docket. Tho case of Seymour & Co. , against the Western (or ayetteville) i auroad Cora pany, involving $250,000, was brought to a termination yesterday in the U. S. Circuit Court, being decided ia tavor of the defendants.- It was instituted in 18T6 by Mr. II. W. Miller and Mr. V. A. Ilaish and defended by Hon. Geo. E. Uadgr and Mr. li. F. Moore. It passed oirt.be docket before or during the war, and was rein stated in lSo'9. In 1S75 it. Has tried be fore Ilis Manor Judge Brooks ami af'er a decision by him virtually in favor of the de fendants it was made a mistrial on account of the iuadverteut discharge of the jury. Being brought to trial again yesterday before His Honor Judge Bond the same decision was arrived at, and the oldest case on ttyj docket was disposed of. The plaintiffs gave notice that they expecto 1 to take tho case to the Supreme Court of the United States. Raleigh Observer. The University Suit. The case of C. Dewey, the assignee of the Bank of North Carolina, vs. the Uni versity of North Carolina was heard on exceptions yesterday by the U. S. Circuit Court, Judges Bond and Brooks presiding. The report of Commissioner Snow as to the quantity of land to be retained by the University was highly complimented by the court for its lucidity and thorough ness, and was confirmed in the main. The University holds exempt from sale the Professors' houses, the campus and some four or five hundred acres of land, East, Southeast, Soutlrand Southwest of the campus in a compact body . The lands ordered to be sold are some detached por tions North, East and Southwest of the village, embracing some eligible building lots. We learn that the friends ot the University arc well pleased with the de cision. The case was ably argued by Messrs. Fowlo and Carter for the Uni versity and Mr. Gatling for tho creditors.
