Dressed turkeys were all the way from ten to fifteen cents a pound. This is on account of the warm weather. An article is goiuy t ho rounds of the press under the head of "Why Some Peo ple are Poor." We haven't read it, but suspect it is because they haven't got vny money or government bonds. ' ' The ladies of St. Thomas' Church will give another of their pleasant series of Sociables at the Opera House, on the even ing after Christmas, on which occasion there will be dancing and refreshments and a good time for everybody. Protracted Meeting. We learn that the-meeting -.which has been in progress at the First Baptist Church,' for some days past, will be con tinued through this week. There will be" no service to-nighf, but there will te prayer meetings every afternoon com mencing at 3 o'clock and lasting one hour. Rev. F. H. Ivcy is expected to preach1 to-morrow, (Tuesday,) uight, and also every night in the week. Misplaced Buoys. Says the Newbcmian of the lGth inst: "The two spar buoys anchored in the eastern channel at Ilatteras inlet, were carried away during the severe galo of wind which prevailed along the coast about ten days ago. As these are impor tant marks in the entrance of the inlet, they should be replaced as soon as practi cable. Mariners take warning ! As our steamships that ply between here and Baltiniorejaud New York frequently go through Ilatteras inlet or Slew as it is some i times called, to save time and distant e, we publish the above for their benefit. We sup pose, however, the proper authorities will sec to the replacing the buoys at once, and thereby obviate all danger to our coasters. The Coipinitfee apiointed by the Wil- ,t. McLAURIN, re port the following : Whereas, in the manifold workings of a Divine Providence, and in the dispensation of a Supreme Being, whose purposes to us are unknown, it has pleased the Almighty Father to remove from us Neil! S. Mc Laurin, our companion and folio w-lii emau, who was just entering the sliife of life, and whose present career promised a brilliant future of usefulness, Fesolved, That iu the death of our com rade, Neill S. . McLaurin, this Company has lost a iuenilwr whrso faithfulness in itsBerrice we look back upon with prido, and whose genial presence has ever cheered and animated us with a sense of good feel ing and consideration one to another. Resolved, That in unison with numerous acquaintances, but more especially his friends, who were attached to him by his kindness of heart, his urbanity of manners and gentlemanly demeanor towards all, which characterized him through his short lived existence, and which served to mark him as one of nature's noblemen, we do mourn his early and, to us, seemingly nn timely end, feeling that we have not. only lost an excellent brother fireman, but the community has lost a most useful mem ber. Resolved, That in our time of sadness and affliction we tender to the bereaved family of the deceased our sincere and heartfelt sympathies, with the earnest prayer that God's tsnderness may in time assurge the bitterness of this irreparableJ mow. Resolved, That .as an evidence of our respect for his memory, we will wear tho usual badge of mourning for the period specified by our legulations, and a blank paze in the records of thi3 Company be in scribed with his name, age and date of death. Resolved, That a copy of these resolu tions to he sent the family of the de ceased, and also furnish to the city papers : 1 . A. At A. Am 1 1-11 1 wiiLi a request iuai iuey oe puuusneu. II. F. True Economy. It has been found that the only true economy i that which ston the little leaks and saves ia trifles. Good housewives have proved this by experi ence. T e A. C. Line. . The reopening of the Atlantic Coast Line by the completion of the temporary bridge at Wcldon which, according to Col.
