A company cf tie Sixth Cavalry from Fort Dodge rucked the Indians, broko tip their prrcit, and wounded many of them, i-ccg others a sou of Littlo Kobe, lis Coaanches and Kiowas then joisd them in a serious war, raiding tirosza Kansas to the Kepublican, litg many women, children, and KtL'erOnd carrying off others, Eev crU jonng girls being taken to 'the tiled Flaica of Texas, where they wera afterwards recaptured. Gen. Ittcfl, from the Department of Einsas, and Gen. Mackenzie, from Trxu, ero sent on what i ksovn as Miles first Indian expedi tion. Miles operated against tho Ctejencet, and Mackenzie against the Coaacches, many of the Indians be hg killed. At tho close of the war tielnduus were brought into the agencies, and their cattle, horses, and aras taken from them. Tho eouthem Ccejennes then became to crippled tat they have ccver again gono to war. liter their war with tho Sioux in topping tho eurvey of tho Northern rre, the northern Cheycnues were qniet until 1ST5-G, wheu they joined ia the tiittin Kull war on account cf tha occapation of j tho Black Iiills. A year ago last spring Dili KniVa band tho Cheyennca who art caking for tho North came into old lied Cioud Agency and surrender ed to Gen. Crook. Tho remainder of tie land, ccder Littlo Chief, Bravo Wolf and Two Moons, came to tho couth of tho Tongne Kiver and sur rendered to Miles. In these divisions easy families became separated. . The Gorcmcent decided to consolidate the Cbdyeunea in a single agency at Camp Bapply, where there is a good reservation and a large one, and Dull Knife's band were taken there, and told that their friends and relatives at the month of tho Tongne Kiver would soon follow them. Bat the-iemoval of tbe latter has been delayed, and Gen. Miles has promised to do what he could to save them from it. Dull Kaift'a band had for some time been ttrettening to go, and lit last, proba bly believing, also, that the remnant of the tribe would not join them, started "on their own book." Little Chief band (now at Sidney) were al tdy oa their way, but Brave Wolf and Two Moons still remain at the coata of the Tongue Kiver. .Many families havo members in each of tho three bands. Even Little Chief has a wife and soa with Dull Knife. There S therefore tbe beat of reason to.be hete that if opportunity offers the three bands will unite and fight to gether. The northern and southern Cheyea cea are essentially tho same. They have the same language, the samo cus toms, and tho same dress, except as codifled by difference of climatr. They consider themselves distinct ca tiocg. however, and object to being put together on tho same reservation. They are. considered by officers of ex tended experience on the plains tho finest horsemen in America, the beat marksmen among the Indians, and tho bravest and moat determined in a fight. One ofHoer has mado tho state ment that in his own country one Cheyenne is worth two or three sol diers. Gen. Crook says that they are the beat Indian waniors in the coun try. They have finer features than the Sioux, and are quicker and more intelligent. They are a superior race cf savages morally, the family tie is of the strongest nature, and violation of chuiity among the women is punished by exils Cr death. As a result cf this children kindly, and the I latter pos b?ks a modesty to bo found among to other savages. Their language is guttcral, but with many soft, musical words. The entire number of tho Cheyennes in 18CS was 1 about five thousand, of which six hundred lodges, or tbirty-ix hundred people, were soutLern uneyenues. Ihe most emi nent chiefs for manv rs bavo been Littlo Kobe . of lie northern tribe. atd W irlwind and Dull Knifo of the )tithefn. Little Kobe and bull vnito are etill living. The raost emiuf ;it war chiefa of the past are tho Man Under a CIo d who was killed ten year3 ago in the Beecher-Forpythe tight on tho Kepub lican. and Old Koman Nose, who was killed by tuo Pawnee i fifteenj years go. Fach of these chiefs led. the northern and Fouth. rn tribes united. They ranged through the country botween the Klatte and Veliowfctoue, arid from the heads of the Little Missonri tic east.
