In bur issue of yesterday we were i in error in saying that General W. B. Taliaferro makes no men I Li tion of Virgiuians at all; indeed, so far as we know, there were none in the action, his command consisting,- for the most part, of South Caroliuians, the former garrisons of posts on the coast which were evacuated as Sherman's army ad vanced. 1 1 j Gen. The gentlemen from the various committees in this , city are in Raleigh hard at work and in defaligable in their efforts to present our si do of the question in as strong a light as possible. In con nection with this matter there have been some shrewd opinions formed to the. ef fect that the Baltimore proprietors of the R. & A A. L. have never yet seriously contemplated extending their line to Charlotte but have endeavored te obtain the extension, to their charter so that they might hold it in terrorem over the heads, of the C. G. R. W. people in the hopes of forcing certain concessions from them. ' ! The World of Fashion. Paniers of watered or brocaded silk are worn with plain satin and silk toilets. Imitation feather trimmings, made of colored muslins, are used for ornamenting inexpensive ball dresses. Meiher-of-pearl buttons ; in tints of rose, blue and green are much used on street suits of silk and camel hair. . Satin brecades are the most elegaat materials used this season for bridal toi lets. Deepest, cream white is the favorite color. -. j : j : Gentlemen's gloves are in quieter colors than last season and the wide stitching on the back is no - longer as gaudy as it was. McRae's Lecture and the Wil mington Library Association. The lecture to be delivered by Col. Duncan K. McRae, op Friday night, as we have previously mentioned, is:for the benefit cf the Library Association, of this city, an institution which has struggled long and hard, though raany vicissitudes for an existence and which is in every way worthy of the noble effort that we know the 1 distinguished orator who is te speak on Friday evening will make in' its behalf , . ,; J-. '. , l ; The Asseciaticn was organized in the year 1855, with Dr. W. .G. Thomas as president, who was succeeded by the late Dr Jame3 H D:ckson, until the death of tte latter named gentleman, which occurred during tha terrible j scourge of yellow feyer in this city in the autumn of 1862. Dr. Thomas was at that time vice presi dent of the Association. There is no record of 'any meeting or election, of officers after1 the death ot the lamented Dr. Dickson until Dec. 6th 1SG5, (after the war), when the members of tha Association again met together for the purpose of j eorganizing and reviving the Association. . This meeting was held in the, Commissioner's Room at the City Hall, the rooms of the library in the same building which had been ceded to them by thejeity, being in possess ionjef the Yankee military officials, who at that time had control of all the public property in the city. At this meeting Dr. W. G. Thomas was unanimously chosen' again to fill the office of President. After his second elevation to tba Presidency of this institution Dr. Thomas went to work with an energy and a will worthy of tke highest praise1 to rescue the wreck of tha property of the association from those into whose hands it had fallen. Books were found here and there scattered la different houses all over the city. Amoug those who ap propriated the books of the library to their own ttte we might meutiou. one Rhodes, a military satrap who. wore the insignia of a Major in the U. S. r army and who had been particularly officious in dis tributing the books of the library among his many acquaintances and friends, then domiciled in Wilmington. Filially through the iadefatigable persistence of the President,' the rooms were returned to the association and they were allowed to take quiet possession of them. But no sooner in quiet possession of their property than a new trouble threat ened them from a different source. The Radical party which had obtained control of the city government by the aid of ; nu merous "fifteenth amendments," claimed the roeas of the Association as the prop erty of the city and threatened to enter suit for them. The Association having no deed for the property and net having in the remotest way anticipated any such state of affairs as the result of the war had brought f about and furthermore not having j auy money to contest a suit, thought it best to compromise the matter, which they did, with the Republican Mayor, Mr. Silas N. Martin, and for the consideration of $1,500, relinquished all claim to the rooms and moved their "books away. Dr. Thomas served the association as President nntil 1872 when he declined to accept the office any longer and Col. Wm. h L. Smith was elected in his stead. Col. Smith declined a reelection in November. 1875. when Mr. Norwood Giles was elected as Col. S's. successor, Mr. Giles declined a reelection ia Novem ber of last year when Mr. C. E. French, the present i incumbent, was chosen Presi dent.- . : J :'"" The number of volumes in the library at the close of the war was between 1600 and 2,000. The number at present we understand is between ?tt00 and 3,000. We did intend giving a mere detailed ac count of the history of the association bu we find that lack of time and space both prevent our doing so in this issue.
