McRae s Lecture. uoc oi tne richest 1 ntellectnal treats " ?. a . that has been presented to the citizens of Wilmington for many a long day, was spread before them last evening at the Opera IJouse, the occasion being the lecture oi Col. Dnncan K. McRae, for the benefit of the Library Association of this city. Prom the well known ability and wonderful elocutionary powers of that gentleman the highest expectations had been excited in the minds of all, and we unhesitatingly say that the reality far exceeded the mcsc sanguine anticipations It was a wonderful production, wonder ful ia iU depths of learning, iu sparkling wit and babbling humor, its touching pathos and burning eloquence, an elo quence that stirs the heart, that com presses the lip. and makes the blood tingle th ough the veins. We hare heard orators in the Senate, upon the forum and on the huntings, leaders of men and directors of public opinion, but we have listened to none who possessed in so. great a degree 'that magnetic power that leads captive the will and controls the senses, as this g:fte.l North Carolinian We use the word gifted in its most comprehen sive meaning, for such powers as were displayed laei evening come from above, and are i ot acquired in schools. The subject of tne lecture was Genius and Talent. Mr. Charles E. French, the President of the Library Association, in trounced the orator iu a brief but most fe licitous mauner. After a graceful exordi um, in which with exquisite taste he allu ded to the distinguished gentleman who addressed the citizens of Wilmington frem the same place a short time since,he launch ¬ ed at once into his subject. We will not at- einpt to follow him, for the simple reason that we caunot. His analysis of the differ ence between genius and talent was most acute and discriminating. Judged by the criteriou of success, talent was the most desirable. He cited many instances in an clent and modern history in confirmation of the truth of the position assumed Hanni bal and Scipio, Napoleon and Wellington, Homer, Sbakspeare, Dante, Marlborough, Washington, Jackson and our own peer Lee. While genius astounded the world, in most cases it was but the bril iant flight of the flaming meteor, ending oftimes in failure and sombre darkness; talent, on the contrary, more fixed in its purpose and less erratic in itsJ movements, achieved the grandest results, and like the North Star in the heavens, though it shone with a feebler lustre, yet was fixed and immovable, a never failing guide in the pathway ef life. His delineation of the genius of Shaks peare was masterly; we thought it about the best part of his address, at least it so seemed to us, and the rapt attention with which the audience listened to his burn ing words as with a diamond pen he sketched the character of the world's mightiest poet, showed at once their sympathy with the subject and their ad miration of the genius who portrayed it in such characters of living light. As we said at the beginning of this arti cle the whole address was wonderful. We do not know ho others felt, but for ojrstlf, we are free to say that we were charmed. The only fault, if it can be called a fault, was the superabundance of good things with which it abounded and the almost reckless prodigality with which they were scattered around. In the midst of the enpymeut of a humorous squib or delicate satire, like the light ning's flash would coji3 a burst of elo quence or touch of patnos, causiug the pulse to throb more wildly or dimming the eye with tears. And so it was throughout the two hours during which he spoke, two hours of intense delight to all who heard him. The concluding po tion of his address was simply sublime; any attempt on our part to n-p rt it would only mar its bean y a i i it grandeur. It should have beeu i card iu t o appreciated. The flashing eye, tne, thrill ing voice, the rapid yot graceful gest icu lation, all combined to give inoreas. i ef. feet to the eloquence that charmed and delighted. In common with att who beard the lecture last evening, we thank the Library Association for the pleasure they aff rded us, and wc are very sure that our people generally will join with us when, as we now do in the language of Oliver Twist ask for more of the same sort an i as frequently as possible. Poultry requires skilllul carving The requisites are grace of manner, ease ia the performance, a sharp knife of meliosa size, a perfect knowledge of the position of joints and the mmt complete mode of Back Horn e. It is expected that the bill wUl be reported next week, when it is possible that Fay etteville street may again be alive with Wilmingtonians. Missionary Service.
