The November and December numbers of this sprightly and interesting monthly for young folks are upon our table. It is published at Atlanta, Georgia, and Miss Annie Maria Barnes is both editor and proprietor. Price 1 5 cents a year. Miss Barnes is a talented young lady, but little more than oat of her teens, and yet she has already impressed herself by her pub lie spirit and writings most favorably upon the Seuthern mind. It is a South ern publication, designed for children but ot decided interests also to grown people, by its rich gems and important matters. To those who have young folks around then on whom it is needful to cultirate love of study and of nios read ing, and to develop thought and enquiry, we commend this attractive monthly. Te oar .'Cousin Annie," sweet, gentle, sprightly "Annie." we extend fraternal greetings and eordial salutations of our heartiest friendship and beet wishes for coses ia her important labor of tutor ing the infantile mind. Kerosene Dancer. A correspondent mentions a source ot danger in the use of kerosene lamps which seems to have been generally overlooked, namely, the habit of allowing lamps to stand near hot stoves, on man tlepieces, and in other places where they become heated sufficiently to convert the oil into gas. Not unfrequently persons engaged in cooking or other work about the stove will stand the lamp on au adjacent man tlepiece, or even on the top of a raised oven; or when ironing will rset the lamp near the stand on which the heated iron rests. It is needless to enlarge upon the risky character of such practices. t Interesting to the Partially Deaf A gentleman in this city, who is very slightly affected in the way of hearing, but who has long earnestly desired i relief, has hauded us the following from Prof. Edison, which we make known for the benefit of our hiruilarly afflicted friends: LabOSAT.'RY OF T. A. EDISON, Menlo Pabk, N. J. j Dear Sir: I have now two assistants engaged at my laboratory in experimenting upon an apparatus for the benefit of those partially deaf. The results so far have been quite sat isfactory, and I hope soon to have a practical instrument for introduction to the public. The only drawback as yet is the large size of the apparatus. I cannot at present say what the cost will be nor when the megaphone will be completed. Your letter will be filed for future reference. Very Truly, Thomas A. Edisqk. Inspection of Timber. The bag was carried to the City Hall this morning and emptied, when it was found to contain five pictures, one clock (a valuable eight day clock) one table cloth and one scarf, all of which were proven to have been stolen from the Cape Fear Military Academy on Chesnut street during the night of the 25th of January, at which time the premises of the above named institution were entered by some thief or t thieves and the above named ar tides purloined. property was all turned over t feasor Agostini, of the Academy, wh eceipted to the Chief of Police for the Review. According to announcement by circular hand bills distributed on the streets to day, on one side of which was an adver tisement of come Yankee patent medicine, and on the other that of "Professor" Dare, the rope walker," tho above named individual descended the steps leading to the 6rst story of the Empire House, shortly after 1 o'clock to-day, and started in a brisk run across the street to Vollers' corner, from the upper story of which building a rope about six inches in circumference was stretched through a window on Mart:t street to the roof of a building on the opposite side. As soon as the showman presented himself on the street clad in his circus suit ot tights, (somewhat like those worn by the Opera Bouffe perpormers night before last)all the little darkies in the neighborhood gathered in a trot after him. After appearing at the window above mentioned and throwing several ropes to the ground the1 'Professor" descended to the street and mounting a dry-goods box commenced to make a speech, the sum and substance of which was, that he charged nothing for the per formance but proposed to take up a col" lection, and in order to make sure of the funds he proposed to collect before he performed and to pas around the hat himself. The Professor then trotted up and down the street on either side from Second to Front street with an empty sigar box in his hand, into which he prob ably gathered about one dollar and fifty cents, in nickels. After this the perfor- 1 a 1 It mance commenced, tt.e rope await(r gcing through with several antics on the rope such as kneeling on one knee, lying flat on the rope face downwards, lying on his back, walking blind-foided, put ting both feet in an empty oheese box and walking on the rope in this way, walk ing backwards, and so forth. There were probably some two thousand people on the street in that vicinity gazing up at the man who was ranning the risk 'J breaking his neck, and among them wa noticed a good many people who never go to the theatre because it is teo immoral to witness such performances.
