C Bellamy, son ot Dr. Jno. D Bellamy, -of this city, was chosen as one of the officers of the volunteers, i Internal Roveuue Collector Smith made a raid through Pender county last week and succeeded in hauling up ne violator of the revenue law. Week before last he raided through Brunswick county but with what succsss we did not learn. The offices at the City HaU and also those of the Superior Court Clerk, Crim inal Court Clerk, Sheriff and Register of Deeds at the Court(House, were all closed at 2 o'clock this afternoon to remain so for the balance of the day, out of respect to the memory of our late esteemed fellow citizen Col. Household Economy The housekeeper cr cook who studies economy in the kitchen, can do so in one direction by always using Dooley's Yeast Powder. It will be found a truly econo mical and valuable assistant in baking biscuits, rolis bread, cake of all kinds, w a fries, muffins, and most all articles pre pared from flour; and why? Because, in using the Doo'.ey Powder you save in eggs, in shortening, in patience, in every thing; and when the baking is done, it is turned out light, palatable, and whole some, so that every monel is eaten npand no waits. WILMINGTON, N. C, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1879. NO. 17 The Value of an Egg. The white of an egg is said to be a spe cific for fish bones sticking in the throat. It is to be swallowed raw, and will carry down a bone easily and certainly. There is another fact touching eggs which it will be well to remember. When, as some times by accident, corrosive sublimate is shallowed, the white of one or two eggs taken will neutralize the poison, and change the effect to that of a dose of calo mel. Personal. Mr. J. I. Meares, formerly of this city but now a traveling salesman for Messrs. It is With much pleasure that we note th1? resumption by Mr. J. II. Myrover of the publics' ion of the Fayetteville Oa tctte, that 'good old Democratic beacon which has shown with so much lustree, and so much to the benefit of the party, in times past. The Gazette was sus pended early in January, in consequence, as Mr. Myrover stated, ot the impossi bility of making collections and bow, in response to the general desire, be bas concluded to resume. We have missed its bright face and gladly hail its re turn. Mr. Myrover has our most cerdial wishes for a future success. The Acanthus. Mit'8 Annie Maria Barnes, the accom plished editor of Ike Acanthus, pub lished at Atlanta, Georgia, is in the city in the interest tf her paper aud will call on the merchants to-morrow soliciting patronage lor her enterprise. Her whole soul seems to be iu her work, which is one of both labor and love, and we wish her the success she so richly deserves. One peculiar feature of the Acanthus is that it is set up and worked off by young ladies. Miss Lames brings letters of introduc tions to several of our most prominent citizens who have called on her at the Parcel! Heuse, where she is stopping. A Railroad "Wedding" Sunday's Charlotte Observer says: The president and board of directors ot the Atlanta & Charlotte Air Line Railroad arrived in the city yesterday, having spent over a week on a tour of i aspect ion of the road. They were met here by Capt. V. Q. Johnson, Superintendent, and Dr. C H. Roberts, General Manager of the Carolina Central, and Maj. J. C. Winder, Superintendent of the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad. The whole party left the city at 3 p. m., on a special train of magnificently furnished parlor cars, for Hamlet, and thence to their respective homes. Detectives and Their Prac tices. Tbs case referred to in yesterday's Re view before U. S. Commissioner Mc Quigg, wherein one J. W. Whitney, a '-gemot an'' of much ' stinct-ion," in that he has been acting as a Detective for the United States government, was on trial for perjury, was brought to a close last night, John L- Holmes, Esq , who ap peared for the plaint id, making a verj argumentative and convincing speech at the close of the examination. The Commissioner, we are informed, re served bis Jecision until Thursday. If our memory serve us right it has not been more than two years since the Grand Jury of the U. S. District Court, then in session in this city, presented sev eral bills of indictment against this same class of people, of which the fellow Whit nsy is a fit representative, for being over zealous in their business, and of detecting irrejularities where none existed, of making false arrests and so forth, and subjecting many good and law-abiding citizens to a great deal of inconvenience and hardship by compelling them to leave their homes and business to appear before a U. S Commissioner upon seme trumped-up charge, so that the detective and witness might be able to draw their per diem and fees from the government. But the time for such operations has played out now completely and it would be well for these gentry to make a note of this and govern themselves accordingly. WTith the repeal of the odious tett oath, which will soon become a law of Congress, respectable citizens in the South as well as bummers and hirelings can be seated on a jury for the trial of any case in the U. S. Courts. We heard this morning of another in stance where a white fellow who acts as detective for the United States Government eutered a drug store in this city not long since, and thinking be had discovered a mare's nest, huiried off to a U. S. official with the information that .iucu a party was selling tobacco at his place ot business with the stamps re maining, contrary to law, ou the packages uncancelled, and asked for a warrant for the gentleman's arrest without further ado. But the efficer to whom the report was made, having a little more discretion than the paid spy, p oceeded to investigate the matter and satisfied himself that the de tective had been in too much of a hurry and had, m consequence, made a false ro port. We trust that the next Grand Jury of the U. S. District Court will, when this Court convenes here in May next, make a thorough investigation of all such cases, and we know .that in the event of aDy true bills being found His Honor Judge Brookt the man who saved North Carolina once from the tyrant's heel, will met out to al1 such offenders against the law and the rights of citizsns a just punishment for their offences. The Military Convocation, The election of Field Officers of the Secend Regiment of North Carolina State Guard will not take place until this evening about 9 o'clock, as the represen tatives of all the different com nan ie composing this regiment will not be abh to reach the city until 7:5-5 this evening, by the Carolina Central train. The only officers now present are Cap tains Worth and Robinson of Co. A., (Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry) and the officers of the two Wilmington Companies, C. and D., the Wilmington Light Infantry and Whiting Hides. In this connection we will take occa sion to explain what otherwise might seem a little paradoxical in referring to the arrival of two Captains, to wit, Worth and Robinson, from one company, wbiie, in fact neither of these is really the commander of the company they repiesent. Owing to the service which the ckl FayetteviPe Independent Light Infantry (now Co. A, of the Second Regiment N. C. State Guard) rendered during the war of 1812, j.he State Legislature shortly after that period passed an act giving the Com pany four commissioned officers, besides the commander, and conferring the tide of Maj jx upon te commanding officer, and thai of Captain upon all the other com missioned officers of this Company . Hence what is known as Lieutenants in other com mands are ranked as Captains in the Fay etteville Independent Light Infantry, hick is among the oldest, if not the oldest Com pany in the United S tales, having been organized during the last century, iu the year 1793. Always keep the bottle handy. Do not place it out of sight, For it cured our little Andy, Who was coughi ng day and night. Dr. Bull's Couh Syrup. A dispatch received here from Raleigh this afternoon conveyed the intelligent that the city bill had passed its third r'aHing in the Senate and now on'v awaits the signature ot the Governor tr become a law. U s. Inspectors Messrs. Wm. Kirkwood and K. E. Hswes, of Charleston, S. C United States Inspectors of the boilers . d built. of steamboats, aie in this city on an in spection tour and to-day subjected the steamer Wave, of the Express Steamboat Line, to an examination, as thi result oi which was, the steamer passed muster and the agents received the official certificate from the above named officials to that effect. T e Fire, The fire this afternoon was at the C. C. Railway and among about twenty bales of cotton on the upper end of the yard. Supposed to have cau?ht from a 6park. Mr. Meares, the Frieght Agent, put his yard bucket brigade at work and got the fire out before the steamers arrived. The damage was light. The fire steamers were all out as well as the Hook and Ladder Companies but it was a long time before they could lo cate the fire. None of them arrived at the scene, all having turned back at the welcome cry ot "all out." To Oakdale The remains of Col. W. S. Devane were followed to Oakdale this afternoon by a large concourse of frissds and ac quaintances. The funeral services were hai over the remains at the First Pre byfierian Church by the Rev. Dr. Wilson, Pator of the Church ,and Rev. Mr. Yates,, of the Front Street Methodist Church. The pall bear ers wern Hon. O. P. Meares, ir. Jno. L. Holmw, Capt. W. A. Cummin, Messrs.
