We wish to state that in our article a tew days since, relative to a change of the schedule ou the Carolina Central Railway, we were mistaken as regards the time. We have always thought a fellow must be hard up for- something to brag about when he has to fall back on his men. We understood yesterday that some repairs were being made to the fire steamer A. Adrian, and so stated, adding that she would be all right again last night, without being aware that we were doing anything wrong by so stating. Captain Walter Furlong, the engineer, says that we were in error, and we therefore accept the amendment. "i Lady cake. Take three-quarters of a cup of butter, beaten to a cream, add two cups of white sugar, one mp of sweet milk, four eggs beaten stiff and three cups of flour, with two teaspoon fuls of Dooley's Yeast Powdhb mixed with the flour and dry and passed through a sieve. The Festival To-Hlght- Do not forget the Dime Festival, given by the children of the St. Paul's Lutheran Sunday School, to-night. It will be a nice affair where all who attend may have a good time, and tbe cost will be only ten cents. Remember the place the South side of Market street, in the build ing formerly occupied by the Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machine Company. Premium Wine. We can confidently recommend Speer's Port Grape Wine, which was awarded the highest premium at the World's Fair, as a superior article of wine for the sick and debilitated, and all those who require vinous stimulation and invigoration. The Vineyards are at Passaic, New Jersey, near New York City. Messrs. J. O Munds, P. L. Bridgers & Oo. and Green & Planner sell the Wine. For the Cape Fear- The Senate Committee on Commerce have reported the River and Harbor Ap r. ropn iation bill, with certain amendments, am ug which is one increasing the amount for the Cape Fear to $75,000. This is better than the $25,000 formerly reported, but it is not enough for the requirements, as the work of closing New Inlet is iow well advanced and should be prosecuted vigorously. Still, we will be thankful for all we can get. Lieutenant Pickett' Remains The officers of Company F, of the 31 N. C. Infantry, who are the surviving comrades of the late Isaac J. Pickett, will have his remains disinterred and removed to Oakdale Cemetery. The ladies of ihe Memorial Association will then, as is the custom of tkisAssooiaUon whenever an ex Confederate soHter diet or is buried here have a marble slab or stone placed at the bead of the grave with the initials of the deceased and those of the com mand to which he belenged carved upon it- Criminal Court. T..e Telephone. Tbe telephone is used in Urge cities almost universally. Business men are patronizing it wonderfully. It is also used largely in private houses. Though sepa rated by many miles of distance, any patron may carry on conversation with any otber patron without danger of the viola tion of secrecy. By means of it physicians are able to dictate modes of treatment and prescriptions to patients at a distance in case of ordinary ailment. It seems likely that its uae will now become uni versal. Exit February. Tbe last of the winter months steps down and out to-day; not meekly and mildly like an old man, worn out in the struggle of life seekinghis rest, but bold ly and vigorously. It has been obliged to yield te the force of circumstances, but it does so without the least particle of demoralization. Its breath to-day is as cold and biting as it was in its prime t hours. People may talk and write and sing of the glories of winter, but, for our selves, if there is to be any change of weather in tie next thirty days we hope it may be tomewhat warmer than it wa to-day. 4 Fire to Brooklyn. Last night between 12 and 1 o'clock a blaze of fir. was discovered underneath the house of Mr. Frank Maunder, just beyond tbe railroad bridge, on Fourth stf set, in Brooklyn . Fortonatelyjtb. firs was d'jcoveied in time to prevent much of a conflagration or any serious damage, except the destruction of some kindling wood which lir. Maunder had stored un der bis house. The fire was evidently the work of an incendiary, and but for the timely notice given by some one sounding the alarm who was passing along the street there is no telling what the extent of the de struction to life and property might have been, as the occupants of the bouse had all retired to bed. Our New Magistrates. The following are th. new Magisgrates appointed for this county : Wilmington Township Col. John D. Taylor, in place of Anthony Howe, col ored, i Cape Fear Township Iredell Johnson, in place of H. E. Scott. Harnett Township Garret, Walker, in place of J. A. Holt, colored. Mason boro Township John A. Far row, in place of J. G. Wagner. Federal Point Township J P Mont gomery, in place of Stephen Keyes. As will be seen, the new appointees are all sterling Democrats. Their term of office continues for six years. This Morning's Conflagration. Between the houes of four and five this morning, a two-story frame building, situated near the corner oi Front and Church streets, was discovered te be on fire. The building had evidently teen burning some time and soon it was en veloped in flames. It was occupied by Dr. L N. Carr, and owned by Mr. W. G. Fowler. Dr. Cair's family hardly had time to escape with their lives aod in fact one of the ladies had to be psssed out of a window, as egress by the front and back doors was cut off by the flames. A greater portion of the furniture of the house was destroyed by fire, as was also the family c lothing. There was an insur ance of $3tK), in a company represented by DeRosset & Northrop, ou the furoituie, but Dr. Carr's loss was considerably over these figures. There was no insurance on the building. Tbe cause of the fire is supposed to have been rata and matches. A woman occupying a noose near the de stroyed building notified Mr. Fowler a few days ago that an attempt was made to fire the house she lived in, and it may be that this morning's fire was the work of aa in cendiary. Mr. Fowler thought that in all probability the woman was frightened and paid but little heed to her. His loss is es timated at about $1,500. Shrierthe well-known and extensive clothiers, Sf Market street, have taken the premises formerly occupied by the Wheeler and Wilson Sewing Ala chine Co., which they intend opening on or about the 10th of March as a "firet c ass" gents merchant tailoring estab lishment, furnishing goods, hats, caps, fcc. &c, in addition to their other estab lishment. This speaks well for our enterprising townsmen, and we congratulate them on their success and foresight. Mr. Isaac Surfer,-Jthe junior . juemher. of this firm, has returned here to cast in his fortunes again with his old friends, and we cordially welcome him back among us. V. S- Ceniiuissioner McQuigg's Decis- ion. U. S. Commissioner McQuigg rendered a deeision yesterday in the case of J. W. Whitney and others, indicted by Mr, George L. Schutte for perjury, in favor of the defendants and they were discharged. We know nothing about the merits or demerits of tbe case in regard to tbe two additional parties, not having heard any of tbe evidence. But we did hear a por tion of the evidence in the case of the first named individual J. W. Wbitoey, from the mouths ofseveral respectable witnesses, which to our mind was pretty clear and conclusive proof of his guilt. Still, we are not lawyer erough to analyze the merits of the case but we have been told that of all the crimes in the calendar the most difficult to prove against a man is perjury; that not; only must the fact of the false swearing be established but a criminal motive therefor must be proved.
