Coroner's Inquest This morning, while the back yard at tached to the house occupied by J. W Whitney, colored, on Third, between Bla den and Harnett streets, was being spaded up, the body of a newly born male infant was exhumed. Special Coroner A. H. Leslie was noti fied, who empannelled a jury and held an inquest. During the investigation it was ascertained that Frances Jones, a colored girl who is related to Whitney, was the mother of the child and her brother, Anthony Jones, the father. The girl stated that the ohild was born on last Wednesday night and that she buried it soon after its birth as it was still born. The child was examined by a physician who corroborated the mother's statement as to its being still born and the jury ren dered a verdict accordingly. Justice Hill has issued a warrant lor the arrest of Anthony Jones, ao we hare been ir formed, and probably new facts may be brought to light. Tobacco vs. Cotton. It has been a matter of surprise that the very low price of cotton has not induced the farmers to substitute some other pro duct, which would become a more profita ble yield. A few days ago wo worn In formed by a prominent and highly respect ed gentleman of Sampson county that some of the farmers of Ida county had commenced the culture of tobaceo in lieu of cotton, and as aa evidence of the differ ence in the profits of the two articles, he cited aa instance of a gentleman who planted one hundred and fifty acme in cot ton and twenty-three acres in tobacco. The cotton brought him some four thousand dollars and the tobacco over six thousand dollars. Qu ite a difference in profit as well as in acreage. The Coroner , is "doing a good business. ltd Review. We bad the pleasure this morning of a brief visit from Miss Annie Maria Barnes, of At 'anta, Gv, the editor and proprietor of a sprightly quart) bearing the above title. The Acanthus is well printed in clear large type on fine tinted paper, and is a paper of marked ability. We hear that the composition is all done by the gentle and fair sex, and it is in every feature a young lady's enterprise. Its object is mainly in the interest of the mothers, sisters and daughters of the land to open up a'new province in wo man's kingdom and we are glad to learc that it is something worth success. Miss Barnes, to whose presence in our city we have previously referred, who is an accomplished and lovely lady, with a plenty of intelligent courage to aid her in her task, informs us that she has suc ceeded in securing 108 subscribers in th s city. She desiree to express her grati tude for the cordial endorsement of her. undertaking given by the people of our eity, and also for the very kindly manner in which she has been treated while here We wish her an abundaut success, and that she may find but few thorns around the roses of editorial life. The subscrip tion price of the Acanthus is only 75 cents per annum. Death of Dr. Young. We have learned, with much regret , of the death of Rev. W. M. Young, D. D., who was, for some years immediately suc ceeding the war, the Pastor of the First Baptist Church in thh city. He died a1 Cheyenne, W-IT the 20th ult. We knew Dr. Young well, and our personal relations with him were always of an ex ceedingly pleasant character. There are few men whom we have ever met whom we admired more than we did this gentle man. He was a true Christian minister, an earnest and unwearying laborer in the vineyard, and has gone to meet a happy reward. Catamaran. A sail boat, known as a Catamaran, is being built in this city. The owner ex pects to hare it finished ia time for the Summer races of the Carolina Yacht Club. Talk about the angry sea and the mad waves, and all that.
